Q: Did the changes ruin my builds?
    A: Not really.

Q: Did the changes increase my fun?
    A: Nope.

With that said they have dampened my spirits with regard to the game. Over the past year (give or take) I've slowly spent time trying to really improve both my build and my piloting skills. When I first hit that lovely level 60 I was sat around the 12k mark and just parked my ship and did nothing else but spammed everything, as time went on I slowly crept to 15k, then 18k, breaking the 20k barrier around 2 monthes ago with 26k and I actually learned how to use my ship, getting a macro down and being what I call a "average" player and actually helping my team in runs instead of feeling like a dead weight the rest were pulling along.

Now with all that said this "rebalancing" has knocked me for six a little, my build has dropped to 20-22k, my timing is off with my macro and I'm begining to feel like that dead weight once again. Now I'm willing to say it could just be me but given the timing I can't help but feel the game has changed too quickly, more of a sharp 90 degree bend after a long stright road instead of a more organic 45 degrees.

Using a T5-U R'Mor, heavily Sci-spec w/ ~350 EPG and ~250 CtrlX. GW3 damage down some, DRB2 damage doesn't seem much different when I take deterioriating sec. deflector damage into account. Shifted some Boff skills around. Performance seems similar to pre-patch. Never parsed myself, PC can't handle it. Turns into a slideshow.

Quick question: Is it the general consensus that Exotic damage-based builds are a "crutch"? If so, why would that be?

What do you mean by crutch? THat they are weak? I don't think that there is a consensus on that. I know that at least before the patch. Tacs with anything was usually the top choice for anything, but they could use exotic powers for that as well.

I suppose it's nothing, but I've seen it mentioned a couple times (once just a few posts up and maybe once or twice on r/STO)

So far I have cycled through 5 of my Charecters and one a Klingon Eng in a Sci Pilot Raptor is completley messed up by this rebalance. Not that many days ago it was a hard to kill ship last night it was one shot killed by a fraking Borg PROBE for gods sake! All Ultra Rare Lvl 14 gear on it with Aegis set. Hardly did any dmage to the Unimatrix either. Yeah gee wow thanks for a fragile glass cannon shooting blanks Cryptic!
Another toon a Reman in a Arkif Fleet CRUISER something completly blew my mind...The Arkif a CRUISER got a Heavy Weapon slot... WTF! YET my AOY Fed Tac in her T-6 NX-Refit did not and the NX is an ESCORT. Oh yeah that Heavy Weapon thats you reclaim is a joke due to having no choice as to what one you get you all get the electrical damge one and you can't craft them, can't buy a different one man what a joke. Also I don't get the can't be buffed by anything yet before it was upgraded and mounted on the ship it did 720 dps by it's stas given YET when I mounted it all of a sudden its says 1330 dps! WTF Cryptic. Something sure as hell is buffing it!

I think I can guess what they mean by "crutch". Basically, the old meta involved using high threat generation and Feedback Pulse (an exotic damage ability) and several other exotic damage skills to proc other stuff like temporal cross-wiring, Drain Infection and Control Amp. In that case, some people might think of that as a "crutch" to spruce up one's damage numbers without realizing how much thought and good timing it takes to make such a setup work right.

Well I finally reinstalled a parser just to see where I sit now. I've been thinking about the very first post concerning the "Balance pass" how it was suppose to make things "fun" for all the players. My fun has kind of been neutered. My fun was an all turret build that I managed to get to just over 100k. It now does approximately half of that. My beam beam build lost approximately 25%. I could care less about my beam build it was, and still is, boring to me, but my turret build was so much fun and now it blows chunks. My only hope now is to keep messing with consoles and that my eventual respec will get me a little more mileage. That and wait for the new power creep. Wooo~

    Alright.

FBP wasn't in my build, nor were embassy consoles. Instead, I used a couple of Particle Focusers and a Field Exciter, with a Datacore and Disentaglement Suite for the other two sci slots. Eng slots had Constriction Anchor, Bio-Neural Gel Pack and Delphic Tear Gen. for the exotic damage bonus and c/d reduction.
Temporal tree maxed, so TCW was a part of the build, though I've never really been sure how much it was affecting my overall damage, especially since I tended to run rather lowish weapon power unless all my exotics were on c/d. Drain Infection is there, as is Control Amp. I never really figured Drain Infection damage amounted to much, as the only abilities I have slotted that make use of it would be Energy Siphon and Tach. Beam. Does it stack or otherwise have some synergy with something else to make it more significant, such that the devs saw a damage reduction as beneficial?

    Edit:
Additional question: Do skills in this game "snapshot" stats at the time of use, or do they adjust to changing stats.
For example: If I use GW with 130 aux allocated, then shift power to any other subsystem, will the damage from GW change as power is moved from aux to another subsystem? I apologize if this strays too much from the topic. I promise this will be my only disruption. :hushed:

I find that extremely odd since my NX Refits got them,.. also an AoY toon. I find it dubious that one would and one wouldn't. I would suggest a second look. The HW slot is UNDER the rear weapon slots. Also, it is empty by default, if you have no others you need to claim a HW from the Dil store and slot it.

Since I haven't rebuilt my build since they wiped the skill tree, I'de have to answer no.... till I consider my toons uniforms and hairstyles then the answer becomes YES.

If they weren't creating bugs every patch, they'de have nothing to patch.

Ar'kif is an escort carrier warbird...

So yeah, makes sense that it has a HW slot. As far as builds, no appreciable difference so far to me. That goes for beam and exotic builds, have not really tested my cannon builds yet.

Yes it ruined ALL my builds AGAIN like last time.

Did it increase the fun for me?
    The answer is NO!

Consequence: Cryptic turned me from a paying supporting STO player into a casual player who will not spend any money on STO anymore. In the past I always hoped STO will be supported for long time. Now i just dont care anymore about its future. Good news for other game providers, I will play their games more now.

Sorry for your loss, losing a fun game is tough.

Anyway, I'm not too disappointed with the changes, the biggest disappointment for me is the destruction to carrier pets. I was sincerely looking forward to finally making use of my Jupiter Carrier along with some other good support traits I have, but the pets are so bad now the carrier will remain on the shelf gathering dust. That said, my full epic tank took a few hits but nothing too bad. I really like the fact now that I can replace the science console with universals and put in a couple fleet resist consoles... Though, I do wish they added Delta Prime to the account starship traits category, it is stupid expensive right now and I need another.

More importantly though, I don't understand why science was nerfed so hard while tacticals, the people that can easily hit over 300k DPS, have remained mostly untouched, with a few exceptions of course.

In a word, no. In two words, heck no. In a sentence, no my builds have not been adversely impacted.

Add another heck on my count, most of my builds i have tested so far have actually become more effective.
It seems the quirky builds i often used might become the new meta.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

I believe that depends on the specifics of the power. I think Tyken's Rift and Gravity Well for example create a game entity and that will act independently of you after you created it, so the moment you activate the ability is where your stats matter, not after(So if you have any boosts available, pop them immediately before you activate the power.) I believe a power like Tachyon Beam might adjust itself dependi ng on your current stats.

The newly changed Go Down Fighting for example also bases its damage buff on your current stats.

    Did it ruin my build?
Nope, but probably because I didn't have plasmonic leach or plasma exploder consoles. BFAW took a hit for sure, but I use beam overload as well, so it's not so bad. I got rid of FBP and slotted something else in its place, since I didn't use FBP much anyway. The only thing I really used that got nerfed badly was BFAW and I still use it and it still pew pews enemies.

    Did it increase my fun?
Well, it made my carrier pets better at surviving and they do more damage now, and that's pretty fun so maybe a little?

Since I don't go out of my way to build a monster dps ship, I don't think something like this balance pass could ruin my enjoyment of the game. As long as I can be useful in the team situations, and I don't blow up over and over again, I'm happy.

    My builds are still viable.
Hanger pets might have even gotten better, but I haven't tested that out yet.

To be honest, if you were relying on a trick build to output unimaginable levels of Damage/DPS, then this is your reward for relying on it.
I saw this happen before In Marvel Heroes by the way, they lowered the Brutal/Critical stats and everyone was screaming the game was unplayable within a few hours of discovering this.

I was completely unaffected because specifically because I wasn't using the trick build.

My only complaint about the balance changes isn't even ship related!
I resent the fact that Stealth Module went from Toggle/Unlimited to Timer based.
I removed it from my kitframe because it was now useless to me.

Only enhanced so far, I do not use any meta-builds whatsoever. Mainly I'm a lover of torpedoes and my favorites were the reputation plasma ones that were destructible projectiles and they work much better now!

It pretty much completely killed my enjoyment of the game, 40-50% nerf on my builds on average. My best performing toons aren't even Tactical, and I'm not even a Min-Maxer!!!

About all this balance pass did for me was make me even more wish I could buy a second skill loud-out that I could switch between on the fly. Doubt it will happen though they would give us the option t6o purchase such a system. Overall not seen much change in my build, though that is mostly as I both go for non-meta builds, and a lot of my characters go for a rp style they keep based on their in-character history.

For my level of play, no real harm done. I'm sure I've been nerfed, but since I wasn't keen on min/maxed to infinity and beyond its no foul. Heck, my Leech is still doing what I got it for (keeping all my power settings at 75+ to take advantage of AMP in combat).
  • meimeitoomeimeitoo Member Posts: 12,587 Arc User
All your builds, no less?! Nah. I made a few changes, here and there, slotted Superior Accuracy, added a DHC or two, or an extra torp; but that's pretty much it.

Since the Research Combat Boost has become not worth doing any more, on some builds I slotted a Xenotech console, for some extra resists. All-in-all, the adjustments were relatively minor.

And I hate to admit it, but sometimes shaking things up a bit is not necessarily a bad thing. :) Fun actually increased a mite too; DPS took somewhat of a dive, though (which, in turn, detracted some from said fun-increase again); but, overall, I actually feel happy with it all, and already spent more again than I ever planned. :P

My Tacts seem fine. Husnock none plasma exploders BFAW boat scored 58k in a pre-made ISA. My KDF Sci may have taken a hit as she only scored around 38k But at least I should be able to still carry the majority of the PUG runs I do.

My main is a science captain in a science ship, with a build based around sci-magic and exotic damage abilities. I've definitely noticed a drop in her damage output, although not a huge one and nothing that's game-breaking (or build-breaking) for me. I can't give you precise numbers because I've never actually parsed my damage. I just don't care that much about the numbers and hard data. I typically use Delta patrols on elite to test out how a build is working and make comparisons. Not an exact science (heh-heh), but it works for me. The weirder and totally unexpected thing is that my sci main also seems to have taken a hit in survivability, which I can only guess is from the way the new aux algorithms (or tweaks to the algorithms) interact her shield abilities and and shield-related passives. But again, it's nothing I can't live with. Just have to get used to manually evading things again.

No clue, too busy having fun in other games.

The excessive bugs, broken stuff, out of whack balance problems, non-trek focus of the game, player community that's antagonistic and other worse things, and dying game is enough to have me check in and enjoy what's left of it once in a while.

    Do I feel weaker? Yes
Do I need to change some aspects of my builds? I'm afraid so, yes
Do I consider my build(s) absolutely ruined? Nope

    Same here.

I’d also like to point out that all my 10 builds will be become much more diversified as a result of it. Some set that were not able to keep up with the old meta begin to hold my interest for example. I consider this positive.

The only downside of it all is that I need to burn some of my resources to bankroll the rearrangements.
