I'm so lost. What do I do? I am a federation tactical officer with a defiant, but I don't want to gimp my toon. Are there any builds that are recommended for endgame pve and pvp?
Also, what is the best T6 ship for a tactical officer? Do I have to buy the ship with Zen?

Skill Point Builds
Just a general advice: It's rarely worth taking the Advanced (usually 3rd) unlock in a skill group. The first point gives the highest bonus, the second a moderate one, and the third a small bonus.
Damage Control is generally a weak skill, since it buffs a stat that has very little impact on typical play: Passive Hull Regeneration. Most of your hull heals will not be passive.
I would hesitate to give a specific skill pick choice, since it depends so much on what you want to fly and what powers you use.
Next weak's update will include a large balance patch, and for that reason you will get a free respec. So you can spec now and still have a chance to redo the spec for free later.
Best Ship
Not so easily said. Some ships give highly desirable starship mastery traits, and can be interesting just for that reason, while others just have good stats.
I'd say if you like the Defiant, consider the following:
Cruisers tend also to be very popular with Tactical Captains. The usual focus is to pick a Cruiser with a strong science and tactical seating (or universal bridge officer) seat and a decent turn rate, like the Arbiter, Yorktown, Presidio or Chronos.
Ways to get Tier 6 Ships:
- Get them by attending the Summer, Winter or Anniversary Event. These ships so far have always been decent, but their availability is obviously limited.
- Buy them for Zen from the C-Store.
- Get Zen via the Dilithium Exchange and use that Zen to buy from the C-Store
- By Fleet Modules from the C-Store the Exchange and earn Fleet Credits so you can buy a Fleet Version of a Tier 6 ship. This requires a high level Fleet and having done a lot to support the Fleet Holdings. Drawback: Not an account unlock, and you don't get the speical console or trait with it. IF you had owned the C-Store version, the fleet version would have been cheaper.
- Open Lockboxes and Promotion Boxes to earn Lobi, and buy a ship from the Lobi Store. Expensive.
- Open Lockbox and Promotion R&D Boxes and be very, very, very, very lucky. Not recommended. Expensive and Frustrating.
- Buy a Tier 6 ship (which came from a lockbox or promotion) from the Exchange. Requires a lot of Energy Credits (if you don't have the EC Cap unlock, you have no chance to be able to do so.)
Eventually you will want a Tier 6 ship, and you shouldn't bother spending any valuable resources to get a Tier 5 ship (unless you want its console or use the skin on a Tier 6 ship). But it will either take money or a lot of time to get it.http://sto.gamepedia.com/Main_Page It's what I started with to get familiar with the game.
No you can put a cruiser skin on an escort. Wiki will give you an idea of the variants/skins that available for any ship.
Also do a search in the forums here or on Reddit for Defiant builds. That can give you some ideas for builds for your ship.
Game is pretty easy so don't worry about gimping your character. I typically wait till my character reaches level 60 or close to it before I apply skill points. I try to figure out what type of ship I will fly for that character, then I put in the points. You can also spend a few bucks and reset the points if you find you aren't help with what you picked.
Or just wait and have an extra respec (if you need it) after they change things around. Cause using it now is pretty much equivalent to wasting it. Just play for a few days 'underpowered' and the spec after the big changes.
AND if you can, transfer your toon to Tribble. Spec it there. If you don't like it, delete toon off of Tribble and re-transfer over again! You can do this as many times as you like. Plus if you have an account bank on Tribble and lobi; when you transfer your toon, the lobi goes w/ it. Keep transfering and stashing lobi in the account bank till you have enough to try a ship, or whatever, from the lobi store.
SHIP: 2 criteria: 'best' stats and looks. They may not come on the same ship, up to you to decide. Plus in June w/ the Summer Event we get another free* ship. If you don't want to spend cash on a Tier6, you can wait till then and see what ship they give out. Its always a decent one. Maybe another Vorgon ship to go w/ last years?
Other advice: Waiting is good. If you are willing/able to buy Zen; wait for a Zen sale. Then wait for a ship sale (ship bundles give best value vs single ships) If done for maximum value you can get +40% Zen then save 20% off a ship (or 20% off a bundle which is already 33% off the same single ship prices) The %'s can really add up to reward patience.
If you like a non-C-store ship and have real money to spend, you buy Master Keys. You can either sell them on the Exchange or (since the Exchange only goes to 1B) they have become a currency themselves. For example, I've seen people in Zone chat say "selling [insert name here] for 225 keys". Again, Master Keys do go on 15% sale (like they are now) so is a better time to buy. But worse time to sell on Exchange since supply is up.
Nope, there are different Defiant variants. Those are the only ones you could use (after you buy those ships).
Many ships have versions at different tiers, typically one model at Tier 2 to Tier 4, and one Tier 5 and some also at Tier 6. Within those variants, you can mix & match the costume pieces. If you for example buy the Tier 6 Heavy Escort Carrier, you would be able to use the Tier 4 costume variants (Akira, Zephyr and Oslo) because they are free, and the Tier 6 Alita (because you bought it), but not the Thunderchild and Armitage, since the latter two are Tier 4 Refit and Tier 5 Retrofits which you need to purchase.
The TOS Enterprise has a Tier 6 version, but it's ridicilously expensive, since it was a special Promotion ship that is currently not available, so you'd have to scour trade channels to find someone willing to sell you one for something beyond a billion EC probably. Not exactly the type of ship you want to acquire for now, I think.
