Thoughts on the Competitive Reputation?

Now that it's been a few days to sink in, I'm curious what you guys think about the new reputation. I'm torn. I don't really like PVP, and although the two ques we've heard about don't have much direct PVP (one doesn't have any), there is still a little. For the first time, I'm tempted to let this rep pass me by.

On the other hand, I've got eleven characters. In 60 days, (40 first run, then 20 with sponsorship) I could have 352,000 dilithium on hand, not including turning in unused marks/elite marks on characters who don't use the equipment. At current exchange prices and for a F2P player like myself with a RL job and family, that's nothing to shrug off.

I will probably end up doing it for the sake of staying busy, but part of me doesn't look forward to running these competitive PVE scenarios...

What do you guys think about this?

Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

I assume that, like past reps, I can generate sufficient marks by trading in tropical birds or the like, so I'll get it done eventually.

I'd say you really just have to try it for yourself. I'm definitely not into PVP but my runs through Binary Circuit have been fun. It's competitive like Crystalline Entity or Starbase 24 only with elements from a japanese gameshow forming the match's backbone.

At the very least, it's not going to change how you play STO. It may be competitive but it's not PVP in any classic sense. It just feels like an odd-ball evolution of PVE (at least for ground) so it probably won't be any kind of struggle to put the games in to level up a rep.

352,000 dilithium is like $12. For someone with a RL job, I think $12 is probably not worth wasting your free time for something you don't want to do.

I didn't mean to act as if that's a lot. I just mean I have a tight budget. Sometimes I buy Zen for cash, but not often. I grind out as much as I can get. And when completing a rep will get me a third of the way to a new ship, it's hard to ignore.

This. If I can grind epohhs for it, I'll do it. Otherwise...... nah.

Might be the first reputation that I don't start. Might do it if Cryptic does another Recruitment Event that requires us to get 11 or more Reputations to Tier V especially if it gives Epic Mk XIV equipment provided the get 9 Reputations to Tier V reward from the Temporal Recruitment Event is done as well. Of course, there is always Tribble that lets us get all the Reputation equipment we want in a couple of minutes to test it out.

    ... meh.

If I get the marks elsewhere I'll rise it. Otherwise most likely nothing I'll spend time on.

Waiting to see what the ground queue looks like, but already the space "Competitive PVE" queue looks like it will be nightmare for anyone that's not in a coordinated pre-made group. Heck, it seems like it would still be a pain if it was just a straight PVE queue, and that's before you add in the PVP free-for-all at the very end.

So yeah, not sure if the extra dilithium would be worth the potential aggravation.

Plus, on top of having to coordinate people for the PVE sections, and getting vaped in the PVP section, there's an increased chance you'll encounter such...

I don't think it would be an issue if most sto players weren't so incompetent at playing sto. What's worse: being incompetent and proud.

PvP simply makes painfully real how bad people are at this game, and when pretty much everything in STO is handed to you on a silver platter with little to no challenge or effort, it's no wonder why players would want to skip it. It's a very fragile playerbase.

Do you need to win to get Marks? If not, no reason to not to try. And there are always choice of mark options to get your marks for a reputation.

Chances are that if people participate in the reputation, you won't need to worry too much about win/loss, since the new match-making system will eventually group you with people of similar strength. If that works half-way okay, then you'll not end up being constantly overwhelmed.

I've been wondering whether they're going to add the marks to any of the other sources like Borg alerts and the special events and pet breeding and I'm not so sure they will. The whole point of this new rep is to incentivize the PVP and competitive PvE queues, and giving players other means of getting the marks would be counterproductive to that. We'll just have to wait and see.

I would hope that participating and completing objectives gives you some marks win or lose, and that there's a bonus for the winning team. It would be pretty demoralizing if the winners were the only players to get any rewards from the queues.

I'll try the new competitive queues and if i don't like them I'll just wait for an event and get my marks that way.

That seems likely. IF losers got nothing there'd not be much motivation to play. It makes most sense to have winning be the equivalent of an optional in an STF.

well, there will be about 6 weeks between Risa and the start of this new rep. I'd say it's a 60/40 call whether they will put the marks in there. After 6 weeks the rep is old news and they will want us playing Risa, so I give a nudge to the affirmative. Of course they may forget to add them for a week or two. If not Risa then in an August crystalline event.

One should give it about 3-5 tries. One try can always be bad. Then we know more and can make a judgement.

Might I remind you of the last time they did a competitive PvE event, for First Contact Day...which gave exactly the same rewards to everyone. PvP has also always rewarded the same win or lose.

And no mark type has ever been excluded from the winter/summer pet trades. And considering they put lukari marks in the effin red alerts day 1, I'd say there's just about 100% chance they will show up on Risa. No small chance they show up in the alerts either.

    I'm not concerned.

If I found pvp even remotely fun in such unbalanced games like STO is, sure I would do the queues.

Having tested both of the new queues on Tribble, they're just not that fun for me.

Might do them with my Armada/Fleet, as certain rules can be set beforehand, but as for pugging them, not a chance!
