I am sure that, when I equipped armor in the past, it would reflect on my character.
This no longer happens.
How do I / is it possible to get my current armor to reflect on my character as it is equipped?

If you obtain all three pieces of a rep ground set, you should get a tailor unlock for that set's armor.
This does not answer the question. I don't want to stuff around in the Tailor or unlock rep sets. I just want to throw on my Chromodynamic armor and *see* it.
The actual "Put Armor on and see it" part was removed years ago on every armor except EV Suits (wich still show when you "activate" em). Instead ALL old non rep. armor options should now be in the Tailor.
For rep armor its like eliteempire already told you -> collect the whole set and get a Tailor unlock for the visuals.
That's so depressing. I hate using the tailor. Everything is hidden under layers and layers of arcane drop downs, and its entirely unobvious what options are used to replicate what armors.
And then, after messing around for a bit to get something I liked, I realized I had some armor on I was trying to see if it had a "look" so I swapped it, and my entire look changed!
So its somehow saved one of my custom costumes against that armor or something.
