A Disappointed fan and a warning to new players.

I find Star Trek Online's gambling-based money-sinking methods of making profit to be highly unethical, frustrating, and even hypocritical; given the "free to play" label, one would think playing as their favorite alien races on their respective starships would be a given and not require HUNDREDS of dollars to achieve (or fail to achieve due to aforementioned gambling nonsense) ...I invested/wasted one hundred dollars over the course of the last 6 months or so of my 5 alltold years playing Star Trek Online(more than I have ever paid on a single video game before and for jobless me that is not a small amount of money) even a triple-A title would need to be damn good to deserve as much as I wasted on this gambling-driven, hypocrite-run, pocketbook destroying money-wasting fest that dares call itself 'Star Trek' and 'free to play'.

If anyone pays ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS on a SINGLE video game; they sure as hell better be getting some SERIOUS rewards for their cash; since that is enough money to buy TWO entire AAA titles that give you all the content you need to fully utilize all the games' fetures minus later expansion-pack material. Star Trek Online is just another good idea gone horribly wrong and it brings shame to its owners, frustration to its fans and insults to the name 'Star Trek'. I am severely dissatisfied and disgusted.

PS: If you're going to make a STAR TREK game; do not, repeat DO NOT restrict clothing and such by gender; it is simply NOT the Star Trek way, Star Trek is about equality and the elimination of such sexist traditions. Shame on you. Absolute shame on you.

Here's a funny idea: don't spend so much money if you don't think it's worth it, you can get many good ships without gambling or spending so much.

Examples, perhaps? Because, coming from someone who bought a lot of costumes and is playing a female, non-human-like character, I haven't seen many outfits restricted to one gender, except older ones like the formal suit, T'Pol's and 7's outfits. .

You could also have bought 3 C-Store faction ships, that would have been usable on all of your characters. Or 1 faction ship and a 3-ship cross-faction bundle. If you'd asked here before gambling, we would have explained these options to you.

So for new players the real lesson is: do your homework BEFORE spending money,

You chose to spend your money on a gamble...do you walk into a casino and complain when you don't win that jackpot?

STO in almost every definition is free to play...through all of the complaints I have had over the years it still has the best f2p system I've ever seen. You don't need that shiny new Universe Dreadnought to play the game do you? You don't need that Dreadnought to be able to succeed at Elite STFs do you?

You don't need any of these special ships to succeed...you aren't gated behind any content...STO is f2p no matter how salty you are that you didn't win that jackpot.

No matter how much you dislike the gambling...it's a part of MMOs...you want a horrible f2p MMO...then go play ToR...where you have to pay for expansions...pay for story...and pay to do anything at all that has to do with any kind of endgame.

With all the flack I give STO...their f2p system is one of the best you'll find in any MMO.

Sooo, you gambled, and are surprised by the fact that the house won ? No one forced or otherwise compelled you to engage in that activity. I'm sure the Lobi you won, aren't going to waste.

"I took a risk that 30 seconds of research would have told me was a bad risk, and it didn't work out in my favor! I BEEN ROBBED!"

(next up, lottery ticket purchasers who riot when told their lottery ticket didn't win)

On a less ironic note, as others have mentioned, the game is huge, massive amounts of content are free, top-level event and gift ships are given away for free, all the game can be played and beaten with relatively cheap gear bought on the exchange.

There are many ways to earn EC in the game, including converting purchased items to EC on the exchange if you gotta have the spacebux now.

If you decided you needed to gamble on a special vanity item in order to enjoy the game, and you lost that gamble, that's on you mate.

You are mad because you didn't win one of the ugly pancake ships aren't you?
tisk tisk... you open the R&D boxes for the R&D supplies, the chance to get a ship is a bonus. that is why its called a 'Promotion'

you open Lockboxes for a random goody and lobi crystals. It clearly says there is a CHANCE to win a ship

    and
why does everyone scream "IT ISN'T FREE TO PLAY!" every time they don't get what they want?

I shall explain free-to-play for you...
being a player who paid for the game AND paid a sub before it went free-to-play
it is free-to-play because before, I was paying to play, now I am not paying to play
when you don't pay for something and you get it anyways, that means it was free

think of it like Cryptic giving you a burger for free..
Its food, you can eat it and tastes ok

they will sell you fries and drink or even some pie
but you don't NEED them to enjoy the burger

to get you to buy fries, they say:
for every order of fries you buy, you have a chance to get a STEAK! (I would have said cake, but then that would have been a lie)

...now I'm hungry *goes off to buy some Zen*
