Small problem I have

I'm trying to upgrade a weapon I crafted and the game is telling me when I try to upgrade that I don't have any Tech upgrade parts available. I checked my inventory and I sure do have some available. Why isn't the game letting me use them?

Wait, I think I'm wrong. I have a lot of accelerators in my inventory but no tech upgrade parts. I forgot, do tech upgrades come in the lockboxes? Where do I get them?

Be sure to have corresponding upgrades - for example beams require beam weapon upgrades. Also, every item can be upgraded with universal, omega or some other event specific upgrade, if u have some. Advice - don't use anything below superior upgrade, it's not worth the dilithium.

EDIT: R&D level 15 of certain school allows you to craft superior upgrades, or u can buy them on the exchange.

You can craft upgrades in your R&D tab (assuming you've leveled it up high enough). There's a vendor that sells some basic ones on ESD and Qo'nos I believe and of course you can buy them off the exchange.

That sounds OK to me but I can't find the proper section under R&D tab. By any chance would it be "Special Projects?"

You can also earn universal upgrade tokens by doing the Romulan Admiralty assignments. Also on rare occasions random tech upgrade tokens drop in PVE's.

Buy some Phoenix Packs. At the very least, you'll end up with a pile of Upgrades.

    • You can craft basic (green) tech upgrades by reaching level 5 in your corresponding R&D school, improved (blue) by reaching level 10 and superior (pink) as well as superior experimental (purple) by reaching level 15.
    • Basic, improved and superior tech upgrades can drop from defeated enemies in space and on ground.
    • All three of them can be bought from the exchange.
    • You can buy basic upgrades from your ship equipment vendor as well.
    • You get 4 Romulan Republic universal tech upgrades from completing all 10 tour of duty missions in the admiralty system.
    • You can buy Phoenix price packs from the dilithium store and exchange your price tokens for Phoenix universal tech upgrades.

I would advise you to only ever use superior tech upgrades or universal tech upgrades. Those are the most cost effective upgrades by far. The Phoenix universal tech upgrade is very good. It provides a large amount of tech points and costs no additional dilithium.
