I am using a Romulan tactical pilot ship and am using dual heavy cannons. the ship is pretty quick and agile and I like it.
Was wondering if there are any benefits to a tactical captain piloting ht ebigger slower ships and using 250 phaser arrays?
I ask because it would be nice oto have something with a bit more survivablility on occasion and the only way for me to try one is to buy one.

the meta currently favors a larger ship with almost if not all beam arrays, so yes. someone else will be along shortly to tell you more if they haven't made already a post.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.
If you are going to with a larger ship then I would suggest picking up the Scimitar-style vessels. Scimitar Dreadnought are the best large ships available for Romulan Captains, arguably the best for any race. You really just need one unless you want the Console set, which I think is, like, six ships. You'll need multiple consoles if you want to use the Thalaron weapon, though (not that it is worth it).

The T6 Mogai is impressive out of the box and absolutely top notch in its fleet form.
Winged Death, with a side of 'Can't Touch This'
More expensive but still fun is the T6 T'laru Intel Carrier (get it on the exchange). Not a cruiser, but still big and satisfyingly rugged.
It's NOT the Narada, but It'll do
And if you wait about 3 months the upgraded Tier 6 'battle squid' will become available.

Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
Mmmmmm melty.....
Seriously though as a guy with many tac captains who lurvs cannonboats on little ships and beamboats on dreadnoughts I can honestly say dreadnought beamboats are easier to perform better with, but cannonboats are more fun. Thats just my opinion of course. My favourite build list is probably 60/40 in favour of beamboats, but that's also factoring in the larger number of beamboats I own.

That being said, check out the Morrigu, it's unreal good. Tough like a large cruiser, agile like an Escort, fantastic trait, console and bridge officer layout.. the ship is amazing.
I personally prefer the Morrigu over the Scimitar variants, but you can't lose with either. If you really want something big and menacing then the Scimitar is one of the best ships in the game. You really do have a lot of great options.
If you use a couple dual beam banks you definitely do still have to aim
What I guess I'm saying is you can get it to work on the larger ships but they kinda become a hybrid. Half dps and half tank. They can take a ton of damage and still dish out some but if your looking for flat out dps I'd say you should be looking for a escort or tactical ship.
Don't let anyone ever tell you that certain careers MUST fly certain classes of ships or that certain weapons are "useless". Fly what you like, the rest is just window dressing,...
