There are a couple career changes I would do with my characters if we were able to actually change careers between sci eng and tac, say for 1000 zen or something. What do you think?
If I remember it correctly from said devs shooting it down, it just "isn't possible" the way the code and character data are implemented (of course everything would be possible, but it would be a giant hassle and prone to many new bugs)
My mother was an epohh and my father smelled of tulaberries
I have seen this request ever since I first started playing back in January 2014. I am pretty sure this has been asked prior to that as well.
Best thing to do is to simply create a new captain with the career you want.
- Use an available character slot.
- Buy more slots.
- Delete a captain and create a new one.

This. This is what I do.
Respeccing is fine, but I think the OP meant to also get the abilities that swapping careers would give them. (Photonic fleet/APA/Rotate Shield Frequency)
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything.
I don't think it's impossible. I just don't think it's profitable enough for them to consider it. They'd rather you spend more zen creating a new character and equipping that new character. It would also be a MASSIVE undertaking for them to implement career changes into the game with little to no revenue to cover all that work.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.
New characters leads to more zen sales. Different players spend money in different ways. Some spend none. Some spend a lot. In a macro sense, creating new characters inevitably leads to new zen sales that would not have happened had the new character not been created.

True. I spend very little zen because I have very low finances. If I had unlimited finances I know I'd spend a lot more than I do now. Most of my zen comes from Arc quests and LTS stipend.

Not a good idea. Choices should have some consequences, and there's already a lot that we can change with just one click of a mouse nowadays (Boff lay-out, ship lay-out, even ships to name just a few). Careers are already made less important on the ground for example with all the universal stuff, I'd prefer if they didn't go any further with this.
If anything, I'd actually want career (and species too) to matter a lot more for gameplay. Some things you should only be able to do (or do well) if you're the right career imo, that will promote diversity. And since it encourages creating more characters, it's also good for the game.
