Best budget ship set

glenn#1579 glenn Member Posts: 275 Arc User
I am sure that this question has been asked many times before but searching for it is very tough.

I have bits and pieces of sets strung out across my toons. Could anyone advise on a set I can get from standard missions. What I am and not looking for

NOT) Looking for something that costs 100mil EC on the exchange.
NOT) Looking for rep gear. I have a single toon levelling up to get the markers.
NOT) Looking for the Okey-Kockey 2000 that was available from a lockbox 2 years ago.
AM) Looking for a set I can get from standard missions, including replays.

I am sorry if the above seems somewhat brusque but I have, as I am sure many others have, been mucked about with spurious responses.

Once more, sorry if this seems rude but it ensures I get the answers that I need.

Thanks in advance

Sol Defense (aka Desperate Defence aka Midnight set) is nice for non-sci builds, used it both on my main back when it came out and then on my temporal agent until I ground all the reps, including in queues. Kobali set is reportedly nice too, but I didn't use it much. If you go for temp/op strategist, Kobali engine can be interesting with its -CD on heals (experimenting with it now.)

For sci builds some kitbash of Solanae, both quantum phase sets and Butterfly set (which is a bit oddball since it's a console, an omnibeam/turret and a core. Don't think we have any other sets like that.) Really depends on the exact kind of sci build.

Hmm... that's not easy to answer. There are a lot of sets available that fit your requirements, but it's hard to recommend one without knowing what kind of ships you like to fly and how you like to fly them. Also, are you interested in weapons/console sets or deflector/engine/warp core/shield sets? What energy type do you favour?

For now, I can recommend two equipment sets that I feel are decent all-rounders.

First, the Desperate Defenses (AKA, Sol Defense) set from the mission Midnight. It's a bit tanky, gives your engines a nice flame effect, and the 3-piece bonus is an AOE heal. It has deflector, engine, and shield, you'll need a spare warp core from somewhere else.

Second, the Solanae Hybrid Technologies set from Step Between Stars is pretty good for a science setup. Most importantly, the deflector gives 35 points of EPG and Drain Expertise at Mk XII and even more if you upgrade it. The 3-piece bonus lets you leech hull points from the enemy; not terribly effective healing, but amusing. The set has a warp core, but that can only be obtained from the 2014 Anniversary ship (it's in the Lobi store, but not worth it just for a warp core). The three pieces from the mission are usable without it.

Have you looked at the wiki? It has a big table of space sets ... somewhere.

    - you can get purple mark XII space gear for under 30,000 EC per piece on the exchange, but no set bonus

    - episode replay rewards list: http://sto.gamepedia.com/Episode_replay

    - Most of the Kobali set from zombie Kim episode - tank set, warp core comes with the Samsar cruiser?
    - Jem'Hadar set from DS9/Dominion -- if using Polaron
    - Breen set - drains and lowered weapon cost - Breen arc
    - Stormbound set - http://sto.gamepedia.com/Mission:_Stormbound

What kind of career does your character have (tactical, science or engineer) and what kind of ship (cruiser, science or escort) and play style do you prefer?

Also, do you have access to the old event ships or have you played the winter race for this year's breen ship?

It is a good thing to mention what you don't want, but without giving us an idea what you DO want it is difficult to give any sort of advice.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

We published lately several Discount builds at sto-league.com.
The newest builds are using mainly gear from quests and the fleet. Feel free to have a look at the builds and our guides too :)

ADD: Timber Wolf did a YT series on budget builds relatively recently. IIRC everything except one item (Undine rep console) can be obtained from missions, and they're actually quite clever, didn't think you could get 35+k out of t5 freebie Sovereign without gold-plating it, but he did:

Cheers peeps.Exactly what I was looking for. I apologise again for seeming rude but I am sure you have all had the useless replies about stuff on the exchange that costs a fortune.

I have several toons of different types. I have loads of bits and pieces from various sets. I am flying (Eng) 31st C Dreadnought, Fleet Galaxy X (T5 U), (TAC) 31st Century Raider and (SCI) Wells Class (T5 U).

I have that Solanae deflector somewhere and will have to dust it off.

Once I get my rep up I will be buying those.

Nice mix although it is unusual to see two 31c ships without the science ship included.

As for the sets, a combination of http://sto.gamepedia.com/Quantum_Phase_Catalysts#Quantum_Phase_Torpedo and http://sto.gamepedia.com/Quantum_Phase_Applications should provide a good starting point for each of those ships.

There is a list of the various phaser type weapons at http://sto.gamepedia.com/Ship_weapon

Most (except the reputation based types) can be found pretty cheap on the exchange.

For federation characters i usually equip the phasers from http://sto.gamepedia.com/TOS_Constitution_Class_Cruiser
Phaser consoles are a mission reward from one of the more recent FE, but i cannot remember which one at this time.

Edit: As for the secondary deflector, i personally never use the solonae secondary deflector since it is defensive in nature and i prefer a more offensive approach to my science ships.

I'll leave this info here for you to make a decision of your own. http://sto.gamepedia.com/Secondary_Deflector

"I have the 31st C Science ship but don't see the point."

Yep, you do come across as rude. Class of ship and style of play have a big play in your ship set. You may not see the point but that doesnt mean there aint one.
  • glenn#1579 glenn Member Posts: 275 Arc User
I have repeatedly apologised for being so brusque but I have explained it. If that is not enough then I apologise, once more.

The 31st C Science ship has nothing going for it against the Wells class. Can't use the funky consoles because I am using all my current slots to bolster control and epg. The fighters are nice but don't suit my science playstyle which is very much "hit and run".

Once more, thanks to all those that have offered such good advice.

Man, the Eternal is by far the most op science oriented ship I have ever tried on the fed side, getting it almost to 200k DPS. And that doesn't count numerous 300k CCA records out there. The entire 31c set is second op after the flagship set+krenim console. If you arn't looking up for more damage, then throw any junk you have in inventory and call it a day.
You should "bolster" EPG with fleet nullifiers, the engineering console slots are for sets and/or universal consoles. Unless, of course, there is some sick science build with 400+ partigens.

I'm curious, why did you opt for those temporal boff powers?

Well if you're willing to spend $30-$60 on ships, then you might want to just buy a pair of master key ten-packs. Convert that zeni to ~110 million Ec and you can have a ship loaded to the gills with strong consoles and traits. A budget like that will turn ANY frame into a vicious killing machine. Inspirational Leadership, plasmonic leech, helmsman, delphic tear, etc.

Like many, I'll suggest the gear from the most recent missions. In general the game runs on slow power creep, so the farther back in time you go, the less potent the rewards are (with a few spikes here and there). Older non-weapon sets tend to focus on tanking or healing, both of which are largely irrelevant in general play.

But still the chief question is style of damage dealing you'd like to do, the main categories being Directed Energy-beam, Directed Energy-cannon, Heavy Topedo with some exotic, or Heavy Exotic with some torpedo. There's some interesting ways to hybrid directed energy and torpedo, but they're not likely to be open to you.

All of which is going to just be placeholders, because progress in the reputation tracks is going to obsolete 88%+ of anything you're getting from mission rewards. You might use a weapon set here and there, but even the best of them is 2-3 slots on your ship and the rest filled with better tools (rep, high end crafted, or lockbox) as your account matures.

For Funsies..Mostly Cuz its a Temporal ship so..I figured I should have a few temporal abilities slotted :P...That is until My Wells gets the T6 treatment..

OK, I hear you already. :) I will give the Eternal a spin. She does look like a big Wells.

My play style is meat and potatoes. Cruisers broadside and my attack boat hits hard and runs. I do have a Rom Tac but he flies a Morrigu and takes lessons from no one. B)

Cruiser broadsiding generally means nail down the iconian rep track and get the impulse/deflector/warp core/shields ASAP.

Any preference on energy type (phaser, disruptor, plasma, tetryon, polaron, antiproton)? Raw damage generally goes to anti-proton, but each has its own groove and will guide which mission rewards you're trying to work into the mix.

Technically all the record builds are using Terran Rep Disruptor, Herald AP Beam, Coalition (or normal pen disruptors) with crtd/dmg mix in combination with Beam Locator Consoles.
  • nikeixnikeix Member Posts: 3,972 Arc User
Sure. My understanding was that until you hit some higher budget tipping points, vanilla AP was simple to build for and highly effective (in the 90th percentile if not the 99th). I also thought the Terran Rep disruptors really peaked in a group with similar weapons where you could stack the radiation marker to the roof :).
  • nikeixnikeix Member Posts: 3,972 Arc User
Herald AP? Really? I like them and have a set already but didnt' think they actually outperformed vanilla AP.

What's the league's take on Sphere Builder AP?
  • glenn#1579 glenn Member Posts: 275 Arc User
I use a mix of Herald and vanilla APs on all my ships except my Galaxy X and my klingon tac that uses coalition disruptors.
