Need info on something I have noticed about ship shields.

lexusk19lexusk19 Member Posts: 1,415 Arc User
So pretty much im wondering if this is a bug or not. On my cruisers, my shields display around the 13k strength area, some more, some less, but about that. I switch to a ship with a commander level tac seat and the shields will display the same amount of strength until I enter a PVE que, at which time they drop to around 3k strength.

Is this working as intended? Or is it a bug in either the shields or stat display of them? Can anyone help me find out?

Edit: This bug is not confined to ships with a commander tac position. I just purchased a brand new T6 Keldon and the bug is happening on it to. Here are screens to prove it.

Bugged in ISA imgur.com/WtLI3NB
Not bugged Qonos orbit imgur.com/GamES2C
Not bugged Traelus patrol daily imgur.com/aiCxdWH

Battle zones seem to be fine as well. Only PVE ques on certain ships. Very high end ships are affected to. Keldon and T6 T'liss.

Further edit on findings: Support has contacted me and is looking into it. But I have found that after getting the last level to 60 that the bug has gone away. Swapped between two different shields in ISA where it was bugged and had no problems. So it must be a bug in the level matching for anyone below level 60.

For accuracy, be sure you are in system space (like outside ESD) to look at your ship stats. Ship stats are not accurate in sector space or on the ground. As far as ship shields go, each ship has a shield modifier stat. A generalization of this is sci ships has the best shields and escorts the worst. So, the same shield provides different values on different ships. Also, some gear can affect max shield strength as well.

Some STF's are level limited and it will be that automatic level reduction that is affecting ALL stats.

It just seems more extreme now then it use to be. Like one shot is nuking shields and hull...

Shields are more or less irrelevant in the game. There's an endless deluge of magic powers (eg. tachyon beam) that instantly wipe all shields out, so there's almost no point in even equipping them.

    Yup agreed

Only time i ever focus on keeping shields up is against enemies that rarely if ever use magic shield suck powers, but against enemies like the borg or mirror universe its pointless to try and keep them at 100% because they will only drain them again.

Your conclusion is wrong. There is also an endless deluge of magic and non-magic powers that remove your hull, and yet you wouldn't say that hull doesn't matter and you could as well play a 1 hit point ship, do you?

Shields cannot just be drained- there is also quite a bunch of of powers to restore your shields. There are powers to stop your shields from being drained.

Knowing when and how to use them will keep you alive. Borg Tachyon Beams drain way your shields - and then the drain effect is over. Now you can restore your shields, and give the hull that might have taken noteworthy damage in the same time some time to recover as most of the damage lands in your shields again.

that's all fine and dandy..until the torpedo hits your unshielded hull. even shield at 1 is better than 0 shields when it comes to torpedos

    this^
The problem with Borg is that they dont just use Tachyon Beam they also use Shield Neutralizer
So you have the use Haz Emitters to remove Neutralizer before you regenerate your shields

didn't see this above, but may have just missed it.

all your stats on both Character and Ship may change depending on where you are and what you're doing when you look at them. Even walking or standing still can change what it says. Being in Battle vrse not being in battle will also change them. being at Spacedock will sometimes send them through the roof due to inherent buffs for that zone.

    and some other stuff.

If you pull up the stats you're checking, you might see them change while you do various things. STO doesn't always show the stats you'd think they should, which gets a might confusing sometimes.

Yeah. You best not wander into the Terran Battlezone with your shields down. Those Terran TS3 volleys are usually harmless.. unless your shields are totally depleted: then they suddenly hit real hard.

Traits, Deflector effects, Doffs, consoles, etc. included, I say shield heals far exceed the 2 or 3 annoying Borg powers. It's currently almost impossible to activate anything without somewhere on your ship something doing a shield heal of sorts. :)

Could be related to my issue:

    arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/1226463/anyone-else-getting-low-resists

I mean, it could just be a UI bug. My ship doesn't suddenly feel twice as sturdy; and your shields may not really be as low as 3k (which really is almost impossible, unless you have no Shield slotted at all).

The only thing different, for me, since yesterday, was that we had no Research Combat Performance Boost slotted for a few days. Could be something similar going on for you too? (with Combat Boost Project messing up the UI). I'll keep an eye on it for next week. Maybe it's something you could check on as well.

There could be varying factors involved when entering a system that may affect your shield strength. Obvious ones are from some sort of buff/debuff effects aimed at you as well as certain debuffs caused by "natural" phenomena in the area (say a nebula, etc.). As has been mentioned, there's also the possibility you're in a zone/queue which runs at a lower level so you're level is reduced to match.

I haven't seen this for awhile, but there was what I think may have been a bug where I would enter a system (ie., ESD, etc.), and my shield strength was lower than usual for some unknown reason. Typically, if I simply removed the shield then put it back on the numbers would return to "normal," and I'd be fine. Again, I haven't seen this in quite awhile so don't know whether or not this is what you're experiencing.

If you have a fear of you shields failing and know they type of damage being done by a group of enemies, look into getting a shield that either heals itself against that damage or other-wise buffs up or reverses damage when you get hit by a specific type of damage. Just don't forget that Physical and Kinetic damage are not the same thing.

That possibility is extremely unlikely, though. Shields don't suddenly drop from 13k to 3k. For instance, undocked at ESD, my current shields are 10.7; in the Allied Zone, however (where you're fighting at lv. 50, instead of 60), they are 8.37k precisely. So, unless he's in Zone fighting a lv. 1 Captain, I say something else is up.

I did a check across my toons. I checked the shields in ESD space, then again in a PVE. No change. I jumped over to my rom in a Warbird, again in ESD space 13k, jumped in a PVE 3k. Seems to only be ships with commander level tac.

It does sound like a bug of some sort. Might be a dumb question, but have you tried with other ships that had commander level tac on them and experienced similar problems or is it just your Rom/Warbird combo?

Also happened on my KDF Orion. Havent tried it Fed side yet. But her battle cruiser is fine. But that has a commander level eng.

I take it back, my brand new T6 Keldon is also getting this bug. Heres screens to prove it.

Bugged in advanced PVE ~ imgur.com/WtLI3NB
Not bugged in Qonos orbit ~ imgur.com/GamES2C

In a non PVE que. Traelus system patrol, no bug ~ http://imgur.com/aiCxdWH

    It's odd, that's for certain.

(side note: why mark out the name of the ship? only curious.)

    Nice ship btw.

Definitely odd. Have you tried quickly taking the shield off then putting it back on to see if that changes anything?

I havent yet, but will try that soon. Also can anyone else see if they have a ship that is doing this? I know the T6 BoP kdf side was bugged. And obviously the Keldon is along with the T6 T'liss.
