heh same here. I keep windoze on my ancient desktop just for STO. As soon as it stops working the next day the HDD will be repurposed lol. (tho my old 450GS is dx11 capable so it should be fine for a while.)

I am using Windows 10 and I keep my system updated regularly.
The list of "best play experience" video cards says AMD Radeon HD 5000 or better.
My PC uses an AMD Radeon HD 7350 video card, with 1 GB RAM. It does support DirectX 11. As a matter of fact, I can play many recent games.
Yet, whenever I try to play STO, the game crashes within 30 minutes (most often right after I click Engage).

You want us to upgrade, but even when we meet the requirements, the game still doesn't work.
Try as we might, the ball is in your hands, STO.

You will have to turn down shadows to medium or lower. This has been an on going issue with the coding of the game that stretches all the way back to the introduction of the Devidian FE's launch. It is a known issue and there are plenty of threads on it over the years that PWE still avoid to this day. Hopefully this update will fix that issue but don't get your hopes up.

I have all display and graphics at the lowest setting. It still crashes all the time.
And seriously, why would we need to put everything at the lowest setting for the game to work?

They're gonna say STO doesn't run on DX9 machines any more, but DX10+ makes the game crash all the time. I have to force run DX9 to even get the game to go past the "Cryptic" load screen...

I would say there is more of an issue there than just the poor job on the coding for STO causing that issue then. I can run the game at 2560X1080 perfectly fine at maximum settings all but the shadows, which is set to medium, and everything runs fine. As soon as I set the shadows to high, maps like ESD and others crash fairly easily.

It was stable before their latest update (Dec 1 and 2). Ever since that update, people have been complaining about weird graphics. They obviously broke something since then.

It's the reason I stick NVidia cards in my every PC if I can. They aren't always the best, they definitely aren't the cheapest, but they're the least risky option. Which is a shame really.

That is why I stick with AMD/ATI GPU's. The games I play run fine, all accept STO, which still runs fine unless I turn the shadows up to high. Games like WatchDogs 1 and 2, Forza Horizon 3, and many others all run fine on AMD/ATI GPU's and usually better on release day than nVidia offerings. The last time I had an nVidia GPU in my system was a GeForce 4 Ti4200 and I don't have any complaints.

You would have to because you have a low-end system. If you tell the game to run at settings higher than your hardware can handle, you will have instability and crashes. Simple as that.

People with better specs can run with more eye candy.

Mine was actually the Sears Video Arcade which we got for x-mas in 1977 I believe. Or maybe it was the Atari VCS i don't honestly remember. I just usually say 2600 as people at least know what that is. We only had a few of the original 1977's 9 launch titles or maybe all i forget. Never bought any more games. God those launch games sucked. And vertex yikes and lol. Hated NES and any Nintendo product ever made. Friends had them and only game i thought worth playing were the Zelda games. Thankfully never wasted money buying any. But that's just me. Didn't like consoles or whatnot until the Commodore 64. Then things started getting interesting gaming wise.

You're seriously talking without knowing anything about my system. Before their update, I was able to run STO with almost all settings to the max. As I said before, the problem isn't the hardware, since it used to work just fine. It's all about their broken update.

I wouldnt mind if they updated the engine and took the servers down for a while when they did it..Instead of upping the requirements to something near 10 which is not doing to well..Our company installed 10 and then reverted to 7 after a few weeks..

It's pretty simple. I have laptops in the house. They're not ancient, they all run Windows 10, but they aren't new either.

If STO no longer runs on a particular machine, it's done. If it stops working on my personal laptop, no more STO for me and I will finally be in a position to consider cutting the Windows cord for good.

I'm not replacing expensive, useful computers just because of a *game*. It works or it doesn't work.

I get why they're changing the requirements. They can't pull in newer users and serious gamers if they don't provide a modern graphics experience. No hard feelings. It just is what it is and hopefully the hit won't be too bad.

    There's always Minecraft :)

Have you logged a support ticket? Clearly it's working fine for other people, such as myself, so the hard part is isolating why it's affecting you. And yes, your system is a part of that equation, both the hardware and software, drivers, etc.

I'm not saying AMD/ATI cards are horrible, if they were, they'd be defunct long ago, like so many others. And they're the right choice sometimes.

I'm just saying they do have a long history of dodgy drivers and because of that (and other reasons, some of them completely outside AMD's control) they're good most of the time, but are not the most stable ones.

This still doesn't excuse any software developers who don't do their best to support them.

For me if this is the end of my trek through the stars , so be it i will have enjoyed this game to the fullest , if not then i will continue enjoying the game , sadly there will be a great many of us whos trek in the stars will come to an end because we cant afford a good gaming rig what with bills groceries and the likes.

This should have been done a long time ago. DX9 and XP are well outdated beyond a decade and no IT system should support hardware or software beyond 8-10 years. Having to do so means they are stretching things too far and can lead to bugs and crashes that impact more than the small subset still running that configuration.

Good move to draw a line in the sand.

@jorantomalak I thought this as my psu is low end but i went out today and got a GPU for £150 the GTX 1050TI its desgined for gaming and I am shocked by the fact I can now play sto maxed out.

I bounce between AMD and nVidia, depending on which card offers the best bang for the buck that the time of release. I can't say that I had any serious issues with AMD drivers, but then again I do not play many games every year. I at most I played 5 different games each year over the past 10 years and I am sure some years that count never went above 3 games. That count has dwindle recently though. That last game I purchased was Fallout 4; actually I pre-ordered it due to a 20% - 25% discount.

At present though I am mostly using nVidia GPUs in my desktop (GTX 960), and old HTPC (9600 GT) that is still pretty functional today despite being 7 year old, a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 (GTX 960m), and an old Lenovo IdeaPad Y470 (GT 550m) which I am in the middle of deleting all personal data and bringing it to a local Salvation Army... after replacing the thermal paste since the laptop runs pretty hot nowadays.

I got a Dell Latitude 3540 with a Radeon HD 8850m that was my primary "gaming laptop", until I bought the Dell. Hopefully, my job will not require me to travel anywhere in the near future 'cuz both Latitude and Inspiron are heavier than I would like for a laptop to be carried around on a long term basis. Lastly, I have my good 'ol venerable Radeon HD 5850 that has served me very well which I purchased when it launched back in 2009. It is still fully functional and I keep it around for troubleshooting purposes.

    Yeah, pretty much.

If the desktop / laptop you are currently using was purchase between roughly 2007 through today, then you generally should have a machine with a graphics chip / graphics core that is DirectX 10 compliant.

If it was purchased sometime after the end of 2011, then chances are the graphics chip / graphics core is DirectX 11 compliant.

Thanks Jag. With the week I have been having, I really thought 'oh no there goes STO for me'. Glad to hear that things seem ok then. Actually, having not been on since they implemented the changeover of the new graphics system till today (like was that October..can't recall) anyhow, the game seems to be running a lot better. Seems they had a massive debug end of Nov in the patch notes. Guess that helped and they are maybe trying to stabilise stuff which is always good :)
