Canonically there is no mention of something like this, however there are a bunch of specialized divisions like the exploratory division, starfleet tactical, corps of engineers etc.

In STO there is the special task force (maco) thingy.

I think the MACOs would be the closest these days.

I was thinking something like Delta Force or Seal Team Six.

Battle Group Omega, which were originally Starfleet?

    Winning.
It's what I do. It's what I just did. It's what I'm about to do again. It's being undisputed emperor of an empire that cannot be disproved as the most powerful intergalactic empire in the entire universe; I always win, and everything I've won will definitely be won again... by me. It's my signature move, and thus, it's my signature. Problem, Sonic? Yeah, I mean you, Sonic, because you're being beat up, despite your being super. You can't even hit Shadow back, can you? Nope, he's too strong for you. Of course, I'm not Shadow, I'm the Super Emerald fueled fox that's pulling the strings; trust me, the fight would only be a few frames long if I were in it personally. Oh, and here's something for all you guys thinking you can win Last Post Wins 3.0; trust me, I'll be around a long while after the sun has already consumed the Earth while I sit out with the forum servers on Titan. Yes, I mean Titan... that comparatively little moon orbiting Saturn. It's a nice little place in a version of our solar system where the sun is a lot bigger. I mean, Mars will last longer than your precious Earth, but by then, it'll be one hot planet... and I figure Saturn's moon will be about the right temperate for a super-powered warlord. Oh, and trust me, I packed a lot of rings, and I mean a lot. Trillions, in fact, so I'll never run out of rings to power my super form. Besides, if I start to run out, I can just chaos control more rings into my reach. It's quite easy, really. You should try it. Granted, you'll never have the 7 Super Emeralds that I have in my possession, nor the Master Emerald that I've got hidden away somewhere... absorbed into my body thanks to Sonic logic, but whatever. I win. Again. I'm not kidding, either. Just check Last Post Wins, and if the last post isn't mine, it soon will be. Very, very soon. You can count on it. Seriously. By the way, if you're wondering, there's a really great Super Tails sprite sheet out there... somewhere... by some guy named shadow_91. These sprites are really great. Like, really good. Quality. Just like what I like to see in a sprite sheet. Also, credit to Joe T.E., his Sonic Battle style Super Sonic sprites have a great palette for a Super Sonic being beat up by Super Shadow, who's palette is from a Super Shadow sheet of unknown origin, but it turns out they were "borrowed" from a better sheet made by a certain Domenico. Oh, and the gif is actually a custom made super version of a similar gif, of which there are only 3 or 4 copies to be found by Google, and even then, evidently of an unknown source. Yep, it's one of those things. Stuff people have made, spread around, only for it to vanish and you to be the only person who still has a copy, not even knowing where it came from... like, literally at all. Oh, and anyone notice that Shadow's little chaos snap blast thingies are red and blue now? Yeah, I changed it. Problem, fans of purple? Yeah, I know you got a problem with that one, but you can just deal with it. After all, according to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly... alright, alright, I'll spare you the entire Bee Movie script, just Google it if you want. By the way, ever wonder how your characters would've ended up if they evolved in another universe? Yeah, that. Think about it. Ok, so you probably didn't bother reading up to here, but whatever, here's a surprise for you guys over at ESD (RP) who were crazy enough to read this: Emperor Nat of the mcfreakin' Terran Empire is gonna be right all along! The universe is gonna go BOOM! *Thumbs up to the insanity*
Oh, now don't tell me you want in on all this! Well, ok. Look this that Egg Pawn hanging outside your window, pointing his laser rifle at you, waiting for my next order. He's doing his part. He helps conquer the weak-minded. He roboticizes the weak-bodied. Heck, he even helps keep the useless people from causing any trouble, but you know what? Join. Find the closest Nataran Empire roboticization center near you and join the ranks, before the ranks find you. Oh, I know, you figure it must be so satisfying to know I basically rule the world now, and you know what? It is, but do you want to know the true definition of satisfaction? Well, let me tell you a little story. One day, you see a brand new event. They're giving out boxes that give old event stuff. Your dilithium is plentiful. You buy a whole lot of Phoenix packs on your main, and open them all. You get one epic token. Then, you decide, that since you have all the Breen ships and don't give a damn about the others, you exchange it for an ultra rare, and grab yourself a Jem'Hadar Attack Ship and for the hell of it, a Voth Bulwark. You open both, leaving the Bulwark in your vast masses of starships as you jump into the bugship and deck it out, deck by deck, into the most awesome Jem'Hadar ship you can. You fly it. You enjoy it. Eventually, you get bored and leave, leaving the old Bulwark never flown... until later. Your main is long complete. Your new alt main, based off some character you pulled out of nothing just to explain away some starship being in service without the command of your dear admiral, is also complete. Mostly. Their reps and doffs are hard at work, getting you stuff. You realize the potential, and head back for your dear admiral, pull the most Voth themed build you can out of thin air, and suit up in your giant ship in the shape of you know what. You head out... and cause all sorts of havoc. Enemies scream out your name as their very life is drained away by your swarms of Aceton Assimilators. They complain to the devs of your OPness when you revive yourself from death every time you die. Do you show any form of mercy? No. After all, this isn't the United Federation of Planets, this is mother frakkin' Starfleet, where you explore strange new worlds and kick butt never kicked before. Oh, and you realize that I just wrote another speech rivaling your own signature. Cool. Oh, wait, that's just the original draft, it is part of my signature now. Oh, and yes, I am aware that I have become a Canadian Regent; one day, sooner than you'd expect, we'll suddenly decide to take over the world and declare an "alliance", and I shall become it's Regent. You know, like the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance in the mirror universe of our beloved Star Trek. Oh, who'll we be taking over with? I dunno, maybe [REDACTED], or maybe aliens from outer space. Guess you'll have to wait and find out, won't we? Until then, don't ask too many questions, or else my Breen allies on Titania might pick up on your -- [REDACTED BY BREEN CONFEDERACY FOR REASONS] Also, psst... keep an eye out for flying Tribbles! Also walls. Big, great walls, separating entire continents apart. Walls patrolled by Tribbles. Flying Tribbles. Flying Nukara Tribbles. Don't worry, it's not like they were on Venus with a herd of Tholians or anything, they just like the extreme heat and brutal weather like acid rain and hurricane force winds as the norm. Oh, and definitely keep your eye out on any two-tailed foxes, because if they ain't glowing, they're definitely an imposter. Possibly an Undine, we caught one of those once in my place once. Oh, and if you find a two-tailed fox that doesn't like the cold... most certainly ask him to say sorry. If he refuses, DESTROY HIM WITH A DOOMSDAY MACHINE, BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING ELSE THAT WOULD BE ENOUGH AGAINST SUCH AN OVERPOWERED IMPOSTER!

tr;dr, I am winning last post wins 3.0. Thank you for your time.

I've been interpreting the MACOs as Starfleet's equivalent to the SEALs, but in canon they don't seem to have dedicated ground forces of any kind. As a rule, the Federation does not expand by military conquest, and conversely any adversary that expects to land troops would have to get past naval forces first, so there isn't a lot of call for a dedicated dirtside army. Naval infantry forces (marines) are another matter, though, needed for boarding actions and the like, and I'm scratching my head as to why they don't have them (other than the TV conceit of using the main characters for everything).

Well, it's been suggested that they did have their own starships before the Federation was a thing, and there is the dedicated MACO space gear in STO.

So are the MACOS active in 2410?

I retract the question as there seemed to be MACOS on Kobali and they are wearing the Starfleet delta so they may be a division of SF now

In STO or canon? If the former then MACO, if canon, no.

As said before, in STO MACOs have been "reactivated", for what little sense that makes. In Star Trek canon they were disbanded with the foundation of the Federation in the 22nd century and don't exist any more.

So are the MACOS active in 2410?

As said before, in STO MACOs have been "reactivated", for what little sense that makes. In Star Trek canon they were disbanded with the foundation of the Federation in the 22nd century and don't exist any more.

Yep, I just think they became what is Starfleet Security. Closest to any 'special division' are those knuckle draggers from Section 31.

From what I understand in game MACO was the name of the federation side of the joint task force with the Klingons to fight the Borg....Taskforce Omega.

Starfleet NEEDS a SpecOps division that isn't Section 31 or MACO ground troops. I'm talking full on training in weapons use, hostile environment survival, SERE school, space jumps, improvised weaponry, multiple martial arts, basically the 25th century equivalent of classical Spartan training. The kind of training that would make modern SAS, GSG9, Spetznas, Delta Force, and the Mossad weep in agony. This is the kind of group where a squad of four would be all you need to take down nearly any threat. Most applicants will wash out and return to standard Starfleet duties, but the few that make it through will join the ranks of the best of the best, to join those honored heroes whom even the warriors in Sto'Vo'Kor would both welcome to their hall and fear.

    That is what Starfleet needs.
Space Barbie Extraordinaire. Got a question about Space Barbie? Just ask.

    Things I want in STO:

    1) More character customization options such as more clothing options, letting the toon complexion affect the entire body, not just the head. Also a true RGB color picker applied to all costume and appearance options, which would allow for true appearance customization and homogenous colors instead of "this same exact color looks vastly different on two different pieces."
    2) Bridge customization, not bridge packs. Let us pick a general layout and adjust the color palette, console appearance, and chair types, as well as more ready room layout options.
    3) Customizable ground weapons, i.e. The aesthetic look of phaser dual pistols but they shoot antiproton bolts. For obvious reasons this would only apply to standard ground weapons.
    4) For the love of Q please revamp Plasma Ground Weapons. They look like demented Supersoakers right now.
    5) True Vanity Impulse and Deflector effects similar to Vanity Shields.
    6) A greater payout for hitting T6 Reputations. Currently it takes more time and resources to get from T5 to T6 than it does to get from nothing to T5. Make that grind really pay out at the end.
    7) Mirrorverse Refugee event similar to AoY/Delta/Gamma, complete with new Mirrorverse recruits for all factions.
    8) Independent Faction, because yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me!

Canonically there is no mention of something like this, however there are a bunch of specialized divisions like the exploratory division, starfleet tactical, corps of engineers etc.

In STO there is the special task force (maco) thingy.

I wouldnt think ther would be alot of mention of SPEC OPs , they are the shadow force of the military so who they are or what they are wouldnt be common knowledge even among some high level starfleet brass.

with that said MACO wouldnt fit to well known, and their opperations are straight forward anti-borg, i would think starfleet would have a spec ops divison but only a select few would know of them , and their memebers and missions would be highly classified on a need to know basis , and only the upper echalons of starfleet and the starfleet POTUFP would know of them.

All "special forces" simply fall in under Starfleet Tactical. Starfleet Tactical and Starfleet Security are sepperate branches.

As audience we are not bound by in-universe restrictions, and never have such operations been mentioned. In fact, when Starfleet Intelligence performed covered ops they enlisted the Enterprise crew to do it. Remember Worf, Picard and Beverly in those black jumpsuits? Regular personnel seems at least trained well enough to perform such actions.

in STO, the MACOs are seen on Kobali Prime and in the Dyson sphere battle zone. Their actions don't seem to be limited to Borg missions.

    Red Squad
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Red Squad was practically dissolved when the USS Valiant was destroyed. Anyhow, a possible Special Forces would probably be very similar to the Spartans or the United States Special Forces (USSF), but no such division exists in Starfleet.

There was the Hazard Team in Voyager Elite Force... Cryptic need to send some emails so Alex Munro can make a return, maybe even as head of the Advanced Tactical Training, an area where people could go and buff up their ground skills and equipment B)

What we see in-game as Starfleet Intelligence, comes in the form of Cmdrs Burgess and Van Zyl... As 'intelligence officers', they aren't so much field operatives, as they are analysts who go through the reports so that they can piece together a picture of what's going on. As TNG and DS-9 showed; When 'starfleet intelligence' want a mission undertaken, they simply assign a regular officer to undertake it...

You can even recreate the Hazard Team visuals, at least close enough with one of the engineering kit chest pieces. I included it in my STO headcanon and my Starfleet ships all have two Hazard Teams on board which are my combat away team (my characters generally have the 12 BOFFs as 4 ship officers in duty uniforms, 4 excursion officers for "light" away missions and 4 hazard team officers for combat heavy mission)

This is what I am thinking about. A team or squad of 8 that is the Star Fleet equivalent to Seal Team Six or Delta Force...the best of the best. Where MACOs are elite...these guys would be more elite than them.

Also using Chain of Command as proof that Star fleet can do these sort of mission is a bit much...remember Picard was captured.

I like that idea... B) The ground-based officers of my crew all wear the field uniforms, but I like the idea of a hazard team as well... B) Only problem, is Cara's current kill squad can pretty much already handle anything, so that would mean a second team... :D Hmmm... B)

Key-word being 'should'... The fact that Starfleet Intelligence canonically tasks mainline officers with fieldword, suggests that Starfleet Security can't adequately do the job (but that's not surprizing, there's a big difference between a bouncer/bodyguard, and a Special Ops-trained individual...)

Litton thought they were perfectly adequate for his military coup.

Why wouldn't SS be able to do whatever Picard and Crusher were picked to do? An 80 year old man with a heart condition and a non-combat trained doctor didn't exactly put up a great showing in the episode did they? Unlike Worf, who is SS trained and a member of that department until DS9.
Tuvok has some pretty extensive contingency training for all sorts of issues, some requiring similar skills to Picard and Crusher, but that succeeded.
