This week, we Trek Out the idea of a Star Trek Cinematic Universe, including a chat with Ken Ray of Mission Log Podcast! In Star Trek Online News, there’s another featured mission reward, a blog and a pat on the back from us to PWE. Later, we start looking towards winter shopping when Cookie and Jake review some of the latest products on the Promenade.

And as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages!

TOPICS DISCUSSED

THIS WEEK’S COMMUNITY QUESTION

  • What do you think about a Star Trek Cinematic Universe a la Star Wars or Marvel. Can Star Trek tell that many stories with so many characters or is it destined to focus on a ship named Enterprise?
  • How far should Star Trek push the boundaries of “conventional/broadcast” censorship? Should it push it as far as AMC takes shows like The Walking Dead (not with Zombies, but with language and graphic content)... or should Star Trek stay within the confines of Family Friendly?
  • Are You Happy Tony's Back?

I'd LOVE an STCU! I was really hoping that the new Trek series would have been something like the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the JJprise crews' Avengers, that would have been a great dynamic for the franchise. Even if an STCU didn't go completely off the beaten path, maybe with a Klingon-only series, or a Starfleet NCIS-like procedural, I think at the least we could get something like the TNG/DS9/VOY crossover period. Sure there were very formulaic similarities between the main characters and settings, but they each went about different issues (DS9 had the Dominion War, Voyager had to traverse half of the galaxy alone) in different ways (Picard argued with Q, Sisko just punched him); so even a few different cookie-cutter Trek series could potentially explore that universe in a variety of uniquely-interesting ways.

How far should Star Trek push the boundaries of “conventional/broadcast” censorship? Should it push it as far as AMC takes shows like The Walking Dead (not with Zombies, but with language and graphic content)... or should Star Trek stay within the confines of Family Friendly?
I grew up watching and fell in love with Star Trek as a child, and I'd hope to promote the same kind of Trek affinity by watching it with my own children. Certainly I think there's room for some more realistic, 'gritty' Trek episodes, some with swearing, explicit violence, maybe a little nudity and sex (Oh my!), but overall I think that a family-friendly Trek is best to continue the kind of cross-generational sharing of Trek that makes the franchise so enduring.

    Are You Happy Tony's Back?
Absolutely! I swear sometimes when I hear Tony's voice I think that I've accidentally switched streams over to NPR...and it's wonderful. :)

Hey guys! Another great show, with all the news and interesting discussions that make Priority One the go-to podcast for Star Trek!

On the issue of a Star Trek Cinematic Universe, that is what Star Trek Horizon and Axanar are/were, and the stories within those two productions were compelling enough to hold the audience and generate a new interest in the possibilities of Star Trek. However, both illustrated the real question. It isn't if Star Trek can tell that many stories, but if the production studios holding the IP rights to Trek will -allow- that many stories to be told. In my opinion, CBS and Paramount hold Star Trek as the golden goose, and don't want to risk anything that could jeopardize the income of the franchise, including generating stories about anything not named 'Enterprise'. Until they are ready to let the Trek universe expand, I don't think we will see it happen.
