I certainly see the resemblance, but maybe because a thing doesn't have to be 98% identical before I pick up on individual elements matching up quite a bit. Sure, wildly different secondary hulls, but the dish and boxy engines and their relative placement are certainly similar.

Yes, the problem with this comparison is that your exemplar is not one of the proposed designs for the Discovery. It's one of the proposed designs for the Enterprise refit for the scrapped "Phase II" series.

Take the ship I showed. Flatten the hull a bit, shorten the neck, shrink the primary hull by about 25%, and paint it bronze. If you still don't see a resemblance, this may be because you don't want to see one.

Not everyone sees the same things the same way... The detailing on the primary hull is similar, the boxiness of the nacelles, also similar, but the primary hull... sorry, but I'm not really seeing that similarity...

The hull is probably the main issue. Add in a saucer that is too small for that size hull and too far away from the hull to be practical, and you've mostly summed up the main problems people have with the ship. The hull isn't a standard Fed design - it's a klingon/Romulan one. Even the Defiant kept in line with Fed ships by including the saucer-shape 'style' incorporated into the center of the ship itself.

Yes, absolutely so. The picture I was refering to, that jonsills had posted, was of an STO ship of some sort, which ai really couldn't see any major similarity to either the McQuarrie art, or the Discovery, hense my confusion B)

I like it. It's recognizable as Fed tech, yet very distinctly new.

Cryptic and the 3D printing company are still finalizing details, but it was announced at the con in NY that they were working on a service that would let you get your ship (that is, the one you fixed up in the shipyard, with your ship's name and registry number proudly emblazoned on the hull) printed and sent to you. I'm guessing the fee would be something in the hundreds, at least.

There's a thread about it somewhere in the news subforum.

I have to agree, there was really no Roddenberry element in the new flicks.

New KT Enterprise is from Beyond is seriously fugly too. Yeah, I said it. SD99D97.png

There was none in DS9 either and that was awesome.

that means the networks are TRIBBLE it up and he doesn't want his name attached to it anymore

well, so much for the show being good

(just getting all the gun-jumping and doom-glooming out of the way for everyone - i personally will probably still find it good...after all, i liked STV and the star wars holiday special, so they'd have to TRIBBLE it up SIGNIFICANTLY to get me to dislike it)

    This is HUGE news...

    http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/bryan-fuller-showrunner-star-trek-discovery-cbs-1201901398/

Too many things on Fuller's plate...

He won't be active in day-to-day production now...

    Main Character not cast yet...

While most other characters have been cast...

CBS nervous about another possible delay...

Episodes will be in the 6-7 million dollar range.

Seems CBS hasn't got as much trust in Fuller as most of the rest of us do.

IMO, CBS is pushing to get the thing done, and Fuller wanted to take it slow, to get it right.
Also sounds like CBS isn't thrilled with Fuller's idea/creation for the main character being a Female and NOT the Captain.

This could be the sticking point since they haven't agreed on an actor to fill the roll yet, while it's being reported that most of the rest of the cast is in place.

No, it means that he's got five other projects under way simultaneously. He's still going to be working with the show, too - he's just not going to be running the show.

This series is becoming more and more of a trainwreck with every announcement. I'm starting to wonder if its even going to get produced at this point. Even if it does I wouldn't be surprised if it flops like an 80 year old without viagra. Its never a good thing when a showrunner jumps ship half a year before the series is set to air. Other commitments? Nothing he didn't already know about when he took the job, so thats a bs excuse. As for getting the request for ANOTHER release delay refused...well that should say quite a bit right there.

Sounds to me, like someone who can see that the project is going to suck, doesn't want his name at the top of the 'who to blame' list, and is essentially using the old "I've got other things to do..." excuse, which is plausible enough to get swallowed by the rubes...

Did you read the article, Marcus? At the moment, Fuller is a) still working on ST:D, where he will continue in the writers' room (that's what "breaking stories" means), and will also remain as an executive producer; b) finishing work on production of an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods for the Starz cable network; and c) working on a reboot of Amazing Stories for NBC. That's three projects for three different networks - even without sleep, there's just not enough time to handle day-to-day duties on all three jobs. (And make no mistake, those would be three full-time jobs.)

I did B) And I still think it sounds like an -- albeit very plausible -- excuse for distancing himself from the project... I'll be honest, at this point, I wouldn't be surprized if the series gets canned before it even gets to filming, and you know what? From everything I've seen, read and heard about it so far, that would be fine by me B)
