Not most of the time. Once in awhile the red alert is already in progress, someone got disconnected and the game drops you in as a replacement.
Some tips:
- Gravity well + torp spread = fun! since the little mesh weavers and orb weavers are not very strong.
- Full throttle and evasive maneuvers to get out of a swarm so you can whittle them down from the edge
- Beam Fire At Will when you're inside a big web will break the web before it contracts and squishes you
- Try polarize hull + hazard emitters + eng team if you're caught in a little web (web mine or the big ship's web cannon blast)
- The big ship charges up its web cannon before it fires, if you notice this use evasive maneuvers to get out of the cone attack
Funny, I usually have the opposite problem in the Tholian RAs. I spawn far enough from targets that they're all dead by the time I get there and load buffs. (Yeah, the powercreep made Tholians explode in seconds.)
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix, Toveg, T'vritha, To Vrax: Bring in the Allegiance class. Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia, Ty'Vris, Tia Vex, Toi'Virth: Add Tier 6 KDF Carrier and Raider. Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var, Tevra, T'Vira, To'Vrak: Give us Asylums for Romulans.
On PC what we usually do is pick one of the 2 side fleets and wipe it out first, then the next side fleet, only then moving on to the middle area with the big ships. Most common is going right, but sometimes people split up and go after left and right side fleets at the same time.
you sspawn into the middle of there entire fleet and almost instant die..
yikes
That's why Feed back Pulse was created or the dozen or so evasive maneuvers.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
Favourite tactic = use a web cannon & grav well. Give them a taste of their own medicine. Of course you need a Tarantula for that tactic.
There's enough ships in there that a grav well can easily suck up an entire fleet, then hit em with torp spread and charge up the web cannon. It's possible to kill the whole lot in one go if you time it all right.
Hang in there! Once you get the hang of Tholian RA's, you start wishing you could run them every 10 minutes instead of every 30. They're a huge source of ship Mastery leveling. Otherwise, the advice of others here should help you survive.

Does it help with mastery leveling even if you don't win it? I have tried 6 so far and all have been failures. Only once did my group even destroy one of the groups. Timer always ran out. Right now, this is feeling like a waste of my time. Think I come another time when I can get some Mark XII gear in Pathfinder instead of the common/uncommon Mark X stuff.
Yeah, it helps. But you get the XP for kills mostly I believe, so go after the groups of smaller ships rather than spending a long time hammering at the Dreadnoughts. Good luck!
You know, I actually got killed many, many times too. But I survived longer than that several times as well. And I was in my Captain's Yacht (sort of forgot that when I first entered the Tholian fight).

And clearing out the small groups means a lot less of those annoying torpedoes and tetryon beams knocking down the shields...

as long yopu play on normal difficulty there is literaly no down side of dieing and higher difficulty doesnt give any better rewards what so ever in red alerts, and episodes
the only bonus you get is in the fleet ,events and stf queue runs what actualy gives very rare R&D materials for crafting and slight more marks and repution component
red alert and episodes are actually good enough if run on normal since all bonus from higher difficulty on those is 0.

Ship mastery ONLY counts kills on space maps, so as long as you get credit for Tholian kills you get mastery points.

Don't make ARC mandatory! Keep it optional only!

Keep a stack of weapon batteries in a device slot. They buff power but also repair offline.
The Iconian space set also has Hot Restart to restore them after 1 second.

sums it up lol
