I know ships show battle damage as HP drops but it would be nice to have some as some set options in the ship customisation its probably waaay to much work for the Devs to implement though but would be grand if implemented.
Our ships do take a pounding, it would be nice to have that look it's seen better days.
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

I'd be all for some battle damage. Especially if you are on settings that cause damages. Only makes sense that some of it would stick for a time, until you could get it repaired.
As long as it was optional of course. Some folks might be turned off by it.

I always thought it would be a neat idea to have VFX for some ship injuries. Mostly since I notice that a lot of players tend to float around with multiple malfunctions with a lot of stacks and seem unaware of how bad their condition is; a visual queue could potentially tip off that kind of player that something is amiss with their ship.
Examples could be:
Hull fracture = exposed sections of the hull, naturally.
Projectile/Energy Weapon/Impulse Engine = sparks that fly from the system in question.
Warp Core Failure = an ominous glow from the ship's engineering section.
EPS Conduit Damage = minor electrical arcs across the surface of the ship.

I like this but there is a danger that some fruitloops out there would deliberately keep flying their ship apart in successive queues order to get the maximum number of damaged system animation effects available... like some perverse badge of honour. And if that happens they would effectively be limiting other people's chances of success in a queue in order to satisfy their own vanity.
I've been asking for this for ages. Anyone who played the SFC series will have seen how it handled battle damage with scorching etc. The ships each have a damage image which is revealed as it receives damage and isn't based on HP. STO's damage maps are HP based, and tbh quite poor as they are 'miracle healed' away in seconds.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

There seem to already some players who do this quite on purpose. It's the only logical explanation as to why I have seen a small handful of ships with practically every malfunction imaginable, sometimes in ridiculously high stacks.
Adding VFX to the ship Injury system will not dissuade that type of player in the slightest, I think.

We're not in disagreement. I wasn't in any way saying that showing the damage will discourage the behaviour, I was saying that having a visual way to demonstrate your injuries will actually encourage people to say "Hey look at me and all my cool injuries... I'm hardcore!"
I can see it now, a bunch of ships around ESD all sputtering and flashing from near destruction....clearly I've come out of warp on the wrong side of the station.
We need more stuff to put into the visual slots, perhaps stuff like the OP suggested would add to this?
