It's also one of Cryptic's tools to boost metrics; I just had my first 2 'toons reach lvl 20 in all 7 schools only last week. The R&D system got its current look what, over a year ago? My remaining 'toons still have many weeks to go, not that their current rankings prevent them from doing just fine in the crafting department...

My opinion on the subject is that since I'm not constantly crafting stuff, I might as well push up my crafting skill. Someday it may be useful to have it maxed out, and as some have already pointed out it does increase your crit success chance. To that end, I only work on one R&D branch at a time (I'm already at a minimum of 15 in all branches), using 3 crafting slots for the daily projects. This leaves me 2 slots left if I need to craft anything like weapons or upgrade kits (I haven't purchased the 6th R&D slot from the Research Lab yet or I'd have 3 open slots) should I need to do so. I feel that's more than enough with the generally short crafting timers.
