Feedback from a returning (and leaving) player.

I'm sure that any manager at PWE can see from my account that I, my wife, and my kids (4) all have LTS's that were purchased a long time ago before lockboxes and the c-store. I'm not a f2per "begging" as I really don't mind dropping money on a game for the right reasons.

As I come back to STO from a hiatus of more than a year (or longer, there was 100,000 zen on my account, so... maths), I noticed the skill system was completely redone and had some hope for the game.

I then opened the mission manager and went to the episodes hoping, that over a year there were a few new episodes there.. Nope. Just 3. I ask in chat "So when was the last episode?" and the response is... "December"?

I shrug it off, because afterall I have always been a huge Star Trek fan, and start playing. I dust off my Chimera from a year ago and set the mission difficult to elite!

"Boom!". First fight. Dead. Again. Yep, same thing.

I go back and, oh! There is another Chimera now! Awesome! I then head to the cstore and get my ship modules for the fleet variant. I purchase the Chimera and head back.

"Boom". First fight again, dead, one-shot.

Ok... So, I now appeal to the zone chat in the new sector space. I'm told, "Yeah dude, XII fleet will get you killed". Oh really? Oh! There is now XIV and GOLD armor.

Fair enough. So then, how do I get this XIV Gold armor? Oh, neat an upgrade system! Imagine my excitement, like a kid in a candysho.... dilithium cost of WHAT to upgrade ONE TIER? And there goes my 100K zen as I close the dilithium market. So, I start upgrading. Long story short, I have 0 dilithium, 0 zen, and only 2 golds, but, everything is at least XIV at least.

I go back into the mission, and... Hey! I can actually tank and fight now! So I take down the mission, a few more missions... and what's this? OH! Ships can now level? AWESOME! And what is this new "Ship Ability" slot on my character sheet? Oh! There is a passive I can train? Where? Oh, so I've been fighting in the Fleet t6 chimera now for 6 hours leveling it, and now I have to GO BACK to the standard T6 just to level that ship to get the passive ability?

I have but one question for you developers and producers.. Do you actually play your own game without cheating in the dillithium, I mean, really.

As you might well understand, the game is not appealing. While I spent not one dime on that dilithium or zen, I couldn't help but to feel pathetically sorry for every F2Per that doesn't have $100 to blow on the amount of zen I went through from a 500/mo stipend being saved up. And after that produced almost millions of refined dillithium while it was only able to upgrade 2 ship devices, I face-palmed. But it was the T6 abilities that caused me to close the game and just say, "Noap".

I'll try back in another year or so. Hopefully at some point perhaps when people get tired of Wallet Trek Online, PWE will get the hint and try and level the playing field for free and paid players. Many other games survive and evolve on a fluff-based micro-transaction system and do quite well. This is just, IMO, the epitome of corporate greed, the Federation would be ashamed.
Said NO to Arc. Gets punished by not being given a free outfit, free lobi, and free shuttle. Now forced to use Arc's site when trying to get to STO site. Still not rewards for beta testing the Arc website by force. Bravo Cryptic.

There's lots of incorrect information in your post. There's WAY more than 3 missions added in the last year (or more) and the most recent missions were added in either June or July. All of the stuff that you complain about seems to center around having to "spend time doing stuff." Well, welcome to MMO's. If you already had everything, then you'd have nothing to do.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.
  • Hmm... I don't know how you've got your ship set up, but I've done stuff on Advanced and even occasionally Elite with a T6 ship and only purple (very rare) Mk 12 thru 14 gear without dying too much. Then again, I had a good team with me so that helped a lot.

We've all worked very hard to remove PvP, completely, so that there are no longer any misconceptions as to the presence of such activities for new players and any who are already here and wanted to give pvp a go.

Too bad it's one of the selling points for the console version of sto. I do wonder though if our cryptics have used that port as a way to try and restart that player versus player ordeal. Oh please oh please let That NOT be so!

    1. Why do you set mission difficulty to Elite if you can't handle it? There is no reward for it.
    2. Taking advice from Zone is stupid.
    3. Everything in this game can be completed with purple Mk12 gear and anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know how to play.
    4. Obviously if you want the trait from a ship, you have to play it for a while. Personally, I think this is a good thing as it promotes trying new things. And it isn't the game's fault if you skipped the non-Fleet version of a ship.
    5. I quit threads aren't allowed.

OP if you are going to upgrade/craft gear then you need to do some research first - the desired procs/modifiers have changed in the past year or so, as has the general philosophy for ship-building in general. There is no hard and fast "go to" solution these days - what was once achieved with specific console/doff combinations can now be achieved far more efficiently with a combination of traits/skills allowing you to more efficiently use your console and doff slots. Doff's are available that add shield penetration to beams or that stack CritH or CritD bonuses to weapons. There are even sub-types of most energy types these days which can give ships the appearance of a "rainbow" build but in reality they have 2 or 3 different versions of the same weapon type.

Other changes have taken place which could mean that you are effectively generating a more imposing presence than you think and are considered the largest threat on a team - whilst there are some builds that can use this (with certain traits slotted) to advantage if you get this type of build wrong then you are a ball of expanding plasma in less time than it takes to say the obligatory wtf. Also what works on one ship may no longer work on another, plus some ships such as the command battlecruisers or intel ships have specialist BOFF seats and abilities which greatly enhance performance.

OP: "I asked in Zone Chat"

Well, that is where you started to go wrong. While it can be a source good information, there is often bad information handed out (whether intentional trolling or ignorance). The forums have better moderation than Zone Chat, so they are usually a much better place for information.

As far as the "research and development system", it was always a mixed bag, but that is another thread. It did introduce the upgrade system, which is also... a mixed bag. If you told me you spent 200 thousand dilithium to upgrade your warp core to Epic, I would believe it. I ended spending up 80 thousand to get one of mine to Ultra Rare. After that, I just went with the fleet cores from the dilithium mine.

Everything has a cost. It adds "value" to your equipment, and should provide a sense of accomplishment when you gain enough resources to get the fancy shiny. Your experience seems to suggest there is alot of room for improvement, a chance to overcome the challenge presented. The whole reason to level and improve your equipment, or ship load-out.

Assuming you are saying that you have a total of 100,000 Zen in all 6 LTS accounts combined, then you have stopped playing about 2 years and 9 months ago or roughly December 2013. Yeah... there has definitely been more than 3 episodes. It's more like 3 story arcs have been added to the game; each story arc has multiple missions. Technically, there is a 4th story arc introduced with the Agents of Yesterday "expansion" called Yesterday's War which has a 3 missions, but I won't count it as a story arc since there are only 3 missions in it and the story arc jumps around because the related missions takes place in different points in time.

Assuming that the last time you played STO was actually in January 2014, you basically stopped playing at the beginning of the Solanae Dyson Sphere story arc. At that time "Sphere of Influence" was the most recent mission and it the first mission of that story arc which was released on October 30, 2013. See link below for a list of all story arcs / missions. The next mission after that was "A Step Between Two Stars" which was released on January 30, 2014. There are some so called "missions" between "Spheres of Influence" and "A Step Between Two Stars", but they merely introduce you to the various "adventure zones" in the Dyson Sphere that offers repeatable missions, but they are not really related to the main story missions. Two more story missions were added to finish off the Solanae Dyson Sphere story arc which ends with "Surface Tension" that was released on April 22, 2014.

    http://sto.gamepedia.com/List_of_missions

Since the end of the Solanae Dyson Sphere story arc there have been 3 other story arcs. The Delta Rising expansion was released on October 14, 2014 that introduced the Delta Quadrant story arc and also marked a major change to STO since it raised the level cap from 50 to 60. There is a total of 19 story missions and patrol missions in that story arc. The next story arc was The Iconian War which was released in March 26, 2015 and has 8 story missions. Future Proof is the most current story arc which started on October 27, 2015 with 6 mission; the two most recent missions were released on July 6, 2016.

So.... there have been a little more than just 3 episodes added to the game assuming the last time you played was back in December 2013.

OP (if you are still here), I have a character that uses the T6 Manticore (the higher level Chimera), with all mk xii gear, rare TOS blue phasers and a 180 quantum from the Regent, plus whatever gear I have picked ip from drops, and I have not had a squishibily problems at elite setting. Perhaps you should work with some players that are experienced with the current status of the game and work on your skills and setup.

100K Zen at 500 Zen a month would take 16.67 years to accumulate.

100K Zen at the current exchange of 400:1 would net you 40 million Dil. On average it takes between 100K to 200K dil to upgrade a weapon to Epic (gold). There are some serious issues with your maths here. So perhaps you would be good enough to recheck then we can start to get to the nitty gritty of why you're dying so much because you shouldn't be.

I took an NX01 from level 50 to 60 and whilst it was tough in parts the biggest issue was how long it took to kill everything not dying so i don't buy it, also level 12 gear is perfectly adequate, the upgrade to Mk XIV is not required but a sensible option, going to Epic has a very poor performance:cost ratio and I wouldn't recommend it until you have a final fixed and successful build.

Edit: your sig is wrong too, it is not necessary to use arc to access the game at all.

Also there are many more missions added, here's one whole ARC Future Proof

    Story Missions
Level Episode # Name Giver Release Date
    60 1 “Sunrise” Jorel Quinn / J'mpok / Kererek October 27, 2015
    60 2 “Stormbound” Jorel Quinn / J'mpok / Kererek November 19, 2015
    60 3 “Time and Tide” Jorel Quinn / J'mpok / Kererek January 28, 2016
    60 4 “The Temporal Front” Jorel Quinn / J'mpok / D'Tan April 12, 2016
    60 5 “Temporal Reckoning” Daniels July 6, 2016
    60 6 “Ragnarok” Chekov July 6, 2016

Then you also have the entire Agents of Yesterday Expansion and the ARC Yesterday's War (which appears as you level up)

+1 on account of the way you handle your load there, trucker buddy ;D
