An honest review for ps4 by a pc STO gamer

Okay first of all let me preface this by saying that there are currently no console forums. Now with that out of the way I shall begin:

The lighting effects and overall graphics are beautiful on the ps4.

Unfortunately that is the best thing about the console version. From the very beginning I noticed that the xp rewards were nerfed substantially from the pc version. Usually get out of the tutorial with lvl 5 almost 6 on the pc on the console I was a whopping lvl 3. I figured to myself "Hey they are just trying to drag out the leveling in order to give newer players a chance on how the game works. With that in mind I continued to play and noticed how bare bones this version ACTUALLY is.

NO DOFF SYSTEM
NO R&D SYSTEM
CANT VISIT THE LOWER DECKS OF YOUR SHIP
NERFED XP GAINS
CANT MANUALLY ALTER POWER LEVELS
IN SECTOR SPACE CANT ZOOM IN ON YOUR SHIP TO GET A GOOD LOOK AT IT
CANT SEE A NUMERICAL REPRESENTATION OF YOUR HULL ON THE HUD
CANT SEE WHAT YOUR CURRENT SPEED IS IN SECTOR/SYSTEM SPACE

Now I have had people in game tell me to stop complaining. That the r&d system was unnecessary etc. But I for one prefer to have the same weapon/energy type as opposed to a rainbow boat. As it stands now the ONLY way to effectively have a ship build is to pray to rngeezus for drops on consoles, weapons, etc. To my fellow gamers that may be tempted to try it out on console. Don't spend any real life money on this game. It would be a total waste with the state it is currently in

Are you a LTS on PC? We get +5% XP gain as one of the benefits.

    FYI: http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/10142423-star-trek-online-console-differences

There’s more to come. We’ll be releasing more exciting gameplay and content in future updates, including:
    • Guild Housing and Progression, represented in the Fleet Holdings System.
    • Crafting, through the Research and Development System.
    • The Admiralty System, in where you direct the actions of an entire fleet to earn items.
    • The Duty Officer System, which allows you to direct the actions of your crew to earn items and improve your space and ground operations.
    • The Agents of Yesterday Expansion,

    - Is the exchange running yet? Get a matched set of something cheap like Tetryon?
    - Can you buy white gear on ESD?

You can always buy a T1 connie if it's in the store and get the level-up phasers that go to XII CtrH Dmg (on PC anyway, maybe not without the R&D system...)

Does the dil shop sell Andorian phasers for the light escort?

Consider this a "soft release." They'll be slowly rolling out things as time goes on.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

The exchange is up and running just nothing there

Think of it as a chance to avoid the evil "power creep" that Cryptic is always being slammed for :)

Besides, we all are so awesome that we can do endgame content in a T1 ship with white gear anyway, right?

Thank you cryptic.the game is great, can't wait till the other systems are added. Plays very well. Good job.

To start with one big change they made with the newer version of STO is that things like the Rep system and Doff system and R+D systems will be hidden until you are at the correct level this new way of doing things will be on the PC version too.

They also said some of the systems like the DOFF, R+D, Fleet Holdings will be rolled out in stages, which is a smart move keeps new players coming back to check out the new* content.

I've only got one gripe with it. There are camera controls in the Options menu - that are currently grayed out. I sincerely hope that's another of the things that will be fixed in an upcoming update, because the current system where the camera's basically flying free at all times annoys me. (It's not showstopping, just irksome - I've successfully taken a Fed ship through the tutorial and the Azura mission, even in spite of all the interruptions that tend to plague my day.)

I'm also trying to find if there's a way to set my torpedoes to autofire. I can live with it if there isn't, but it'd be nice.

I've got one gripe with it. All the useless whine spamming our forums. And I thought the bazillion "can I use my account on console" -threads that have festered here for months were bad enough.
  • ussinterceptussintercept Member Posts: 627 Arc User
Im not surprised by this. They werent ready for PC launch so why would they be ready for Console. Components of the game that have been apart of the game for almost as long as the game has existed arent apart of the Console version. I knew something was up when they wouldnt shut up about the lighting changes.

Now it makes a lot more sense why they were against PC Transfers and this whole Fresh Start TRIBBLE. PC Transfers would of lost ALOT switching over and it would of been a PR disaster for them.

This might be a really obvious comment, but you are viewing this from an existing player's viewpoint. Existing players (namely those who are familiar with the PC version but have decided to try the console version) are not the target audience here.
The whole point in creating a console version is to attract gamers who only play on consoles.

New players - people with no prior knowledge or experience of STO - are not going to notice the missing resources you highlight as they never experienced them in the first place.

Except if players from PC are on Console now. Then obviously they fall within that group as well. Cryptic doesnt need you making excuses for them.

So in other words you are whining about what you perceive as whining? You do realize that this is MY forum as well being a pc gamer and even if it werent. There are no console forums for one to "whine" on so quite frankly get over your ignorant self.

LoR and DR was a half a$$ expansion...AOY was 1/10th of LoR and DR. What did you expect from the makers of STO?

Did you really expect NO issues? They only see "money" as usual and now more of an audience of disenfranchised players. Heck it is still "free" if you are willing to put up with a half a$$ product pig-2.gif

Excuse me, but LoR and DR being half-assed? If this was Reddit, calling LoR itself half assed would have gotten you downvoted to eternity!

LoR was mostly adding the Romulans to the game and sprucing up the Klingons so that they could have enough content for early leveling. Aside from a cross-faction mission chain, the expansion was clearly meant to try and even the playing field for all 3 factions and add a bit more of story focus involving the Romulans.

DR was bad at launch with respect to how the story progression was handled, but overall it was clearly expansive. Up to that point the max level was 50, the only progression people could make on the Captains was gaining Reputation powers and the story was maxed out. Delta Rising expanded the goal post for endgame by adding the long climb to level 60, adding specializations to add long term progression for Captains, continued on the story that would lead to the Iconian conflict, and gave us a means to grab end level gear.

AoY for the premise was good, out I will agree that it left things to really be desired as far as story when you look at LoR or DR.

DR was the worst thing ever for STO how many fleet lost half of there players.
Doesn't matter if the story was great they. still inserted failures and supper high HP on the enemies.

Most fleets lose many players over time. People burn out and leave, new people arrive.

My anecdote is the DR got me interesting in coming back to the game after being away for a couple of years. So I'll say it's the bestest expansion ever!

That's a shame. I was looking forward to hearing about the changes to ground combat. The increased response times and changes to melee mechanics sounded interesting.

You must be new around here...NOT my words on LoR but do a search and see forum posters from that time.

True romulan players were really furious as to how rushed the new so called "faction" was launched.

Clearly, one cannot believe that romulans are an entire new faction like FEDs/Klings unless you are living in an alternate reality. However, don't take my word for it and do a search for postings from back them. I was here during this half a$$ launched and so was I with DR's Argala's fiasco. Lots of players did quit this game due to the horrible planning of those two expansions.

IMO anything they bring to place its always at best half done. It is still a F2P if you are willing to put up with the low quality of development.

I've been around since the game went f2p in January 2012. I was here for the Romulan faction launch and I don't remember them being angry about it being rushed. I remember people being disappointed that it wasn't the Romulans they wanted to play as (the TNG kind from the Romulan Star Empire). From a story standpoint at the time it made sense that the Romulan Republic was a fledgling government and so needed the support of the larger powers against the Romulan Star Empire/Tal Shiar.

Now for DR I clearly remember the anger there towards the fact that people said it took forever in leveling to reach the next phase of the story at parts. People were simply trying to do what they could to negate the low returning mission XP gains and as a result, Cryptic got out their rollback hammer and slammed a bunch of people who had been doing the Argala/Tau Dewa patrol exploits and in the process got some of the people who did things fairly also. Eventually prior to the release of Season 11, the episode levels were finally adjusted so you could go through them all more reasonably. The way they handled it though I do admit was not fair, but they probably had to do what they could with the time they had.

Aside from those two events, I haven enjoyed everything that cryptic has put out so far and have little more to say on the bad things they did. I'll continue to enjoy the content for as long as they want to continue the game.

Takes a bit to get used to targeting but flicking the joystick to bounce from target to target is a nice touch once you get the hang of it. Initial targeting can still be a pain though as you try to avoid locking onto a squad mate in your way.

I think launching the console with full pc content would have overwhelmed new players. For example i returned to a 1000 hour account on the pc after 2 years and had no idea what i was doing. The console version in comparison is easy to pick up, and much more content is coming. For now play the campaign and make a start on alt characters. And be patient!

I noticed on the ps4 events calender crystalline cataclism is running at the end of sept. So presumably at least pve and rep systems should be working by then.
