Refits and Retrofits; a letter to the Star Trek Online team.

From a concerned fan who is trying to continue loving your game:
Before I say anything else, let me emphasize I LOVE Star Trek, and so far, most of my experience with Star Trek Online has been good; but I've come across a huge but seemingly easy-to-remedy flaw in the game. Remember; I critique the game because I love the game. That said...

Buying non-standard-issue ships (EG: Z-Store ships) is an interesting prospect, especially considering that this is the only way for certain people to use some of their favorite Star Trek ships; including one of my own; the NX-Class used by Captain Archer. This and many other ships are only available at low tier, essentially forcing players to 'leave them behind' after their characters level up, since trying to use them later on in levels results in constantly getting killed and needing to re-spawn. Of course, many would feel that playing in a team is easier than solo, and so you'd think that would be a decent environment to use your favorite low-tier ship in; but then you are basically 'handicapping' your friends.

In the world of Star Trek, ships can be upgraded, overhauled, stripped for parts, re-assembled, and given new components such as scanners and armor-plating. So in this world of re-arming, upgrading, refits and retrofits; why can't we have (for example) an NX-class ship be upgraded to be as effective as the Defiant-class of similar size?

Doing this(from my 'layman' perspective, to be fair) would seem fairly simple; I'm sure it would take some doing, but it'd likely be worth it. Essentially, you could take the high-tier ships like the Defiant-class 'Tactical Escort'; and make it so players can use their purchased low-tier Z-store ships' appearance in place of the high-tier standard ship's appearance. Or make high-tier versions of more ships, perhaps using stats from high-tier ships for these 'refits'... Please? I seriously want to get an NX, and other ships too, and I'd pay REAL money to get them, no joke! But, PLEASE, start implementing more high-tier variants; I'm not alone in this request, I know more than one person who'd pay for this as well.

Perhaps you could even have this appearance-swap mechanic be unlocked by paying more Zen, and limit it to certain ships?
~Kjell; a loving fan, who is not unwilling to spend money on your game(especially if you do this)

Because of gameplay mechanics. Each ship has a fixed number of slots and stats. Getting a Fleet ship requires purchasing a new ship while upgrading a ship to T5-U requires removing the T5 ship from your character and replacing it with a completely new T5-U ship. It might be possible for Cryptic to create an upgradable ship, but they are not going to make every ship into an upgradable ship. The most we can expect is a Tier 6 version of the NX since we have the Tier 6 version of TOS Constitution. Just hope that it doesn't require the Tier 6 TOS Constitution method of obtaining the ship.

Appearance swapping is already possible with the GPL holographic costumes, but for whatever reason, the GPL store sees little use and serves little purpose when it has so much potential for pointless fluff.

In the Star Trek universe, I agree there is really no good reason why we can't have any ship be an end game ship. In real life, there are of course several potential problems: Cryptic may not believe "x" ship will sell, licensing issues, CBS won't allow it, etc. Nothing is impossible, as we've seen with the TOS Connie, but sometimes it takes a long time.

Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

Just something to point out at your Defiant example op.

If you own both the T4 and T6 versions of the Defiant you can mix and match the costume option between them anyway.

I have all versions of the Intrepid for example, and can freely switch around the costume options
