a different way of looking at the tier 6 connie 'situation'

i know some people are upset about the idea of finally get a t6 connie but it being in a gambling pack.

but here is a different way of looking at it. imagine if instead of todays announcement they had announced they were adding a TOS reputation. and that you could buy a tier 6 connie from the TOS rep for...i dont know.. a butt load of marks. so many marks that it would take you 6 months to get it.

people probably wouldnt like the idea of the grind but they would still do it if they really wanted the ship, right? well if you spend that 6 months grinding EC or dilithium to convert to zen, you can buy the ship from the exchange.

so if you would be willing to spend 6 months grinding marks to buy it from the rep store, what difference does it make if you spend the same amount of time grinding a different kind of currency and still get the ship in the end?

It probably won't be on the exchange if the Jem'hadar attack ship or Elachi Sheshar are any indication of rarity and price point.

    There is no situation.

english is not my first langauage so i admit i do not always use the right words. but i just googled "situation" and the definition is:

"a set of circumstances in which one finds oneself; a state of affairs."

as far as language, words, and definitions goes, it think the word applies. if you point is that this is not some "big deal", please do not post just to argue semantics.

I stated what I had said in a Thread about Sept. 8th:

'What I had expected was a 21 or so day 50th Anniversary Event featuring 'Mine Trap' (updated and made for 5-persons). Similar to the revival of 'The Breach'. At the end the prize awarded would be the T6 TOS Constitution. This is obviously a single Character Unlock just for the Characters that ran the Event.'

Boy did I get it so wrong. We'll have to see what they actually make available to the playerbase to celebrate the 50th that does not require forking out money. And for all of you who are going to say, but, but, you can get it without money. Just buy it off the Exchange (nah, it won't be there, private sales only) for EC, someone shelled out money to get it in the first place.

We get more 'free' stuff for the game's Anniversaries than for the franchises 50th (so far).

Earning 6 months of marks for one person can be just a week for someone else. The Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit used to be available for 250 Emblems before Dilithium so it wouldn't be anything new for players to grind for new ships. Which is what still happens with some players and C-Store and RNG ships.

    Apples and oranges.

This is a limited time promo which ends on 9/15/2016 @ 10am. Actual money is involved (with the exception of the monthly 500 Zen from LTS after a certain point in time when the player has receives $200 / $300 worth of service) when purchasing the R&D promo pack. That is regardless if you use your credit card or exchange Dil for Zen because someone has to buy Zen in order to offer them on the Dil Exchange.

The reputation system is completely free because there is no way to purchase marks with Zen / real money. You have all the time in the world (as long as the servers are still running) to grind all the necessary marks... even if that is something as high as 50,000 "TOS" marks.

Actually, what makes me laugh is the people who think what Cryptic is doing is 'unlawful gambling'. There's actually no law for what Cryptic is doing because gambling law only cover gambling where you have a chance of losing everything/winning nothing. The Lockbox and R&D Promos ALWAYS award you with something. The only thing you are 'gambling' on is the prize. It's basically a raffle where everyone wins! So you are guaranteed a prize! I don't know how many other ways I can say it. It's a WIN/WIN situation.

And before someone tries to argue otherwise, I've studied Business Law, I know what I'm talking about!
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

The ship people want will NOT be on the exchange. Cap is 750 million. It will sell for more than 1 billion ec.

A bit of overblown butthurt does not constitute a "situation". I don't take orders about where I can or can't post except from mods.

Actually by the dictionary definition of the word it is a situation. Just like your opinion on this thread is a situation. Whether you consider it to be one or not does not change that fact

After initially selling at 1b for a few space-rich fanboys, it will be on the exchange by next week. Its price will drop to the 500-600m range during the event and then slowly build back up over a period of months.

If not re-run, it may drop off the exchange in 6-10 months. If re-run at any time it will remain on the exchange for years.

It is actually a bit more complex than that.

Cryptic's in-game lottery system is not considered gambling because the "payout" is an in-game product that has no inherent value outside of the game. The exception would those gold sellers that also tries to sells you ships. If Cryptic were to catch players that obtained EC, ships or other game assets from a 3rd party source, then Cryptic would simply deactivate the player's account. However, this is not considered gambling.

If players were able to gamble for game assets outside of the game and a monetary value can be placed on those items where people can purchase them with real money and use them in the game, then that would be considered gambling in the eyes of the law.

That in itself is not a big deal. CSGO is probably one of the largest online game that actually have several gambling sites created for the sole purpose of gambling skins. According to the following Bloomberg article they cite that according to the research firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming, more than 3 million people wagered $2.3 billion worth of skins on the outcome of e-sports matches in 2015.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-virtual-guns-counterstrike-gambling/

Valve has virtually turned a blind eye to CSGO gambling. That was until recently when a class action lawsuit was brought against them because these online gambling site did not restrict underage CSGO gamers from taking part in the gambling where real money was won and lost. There have been many stories where kids used their parents' / grandparents' credit cards without their permission to purchase keys to unlock boxes that contained skins to then gamble those skins in the hopes of getting more valuable skins and in turn sell them.

The pending class action lawsuit against Valve is for not policing these 3rd party online gambling sites to make sure there are no underage gambling is involved. Valve has since sent letters to all of these gambling site to cease and desist all gambling activities related to CSGO (and probably other online Steam games). Not sure when this will go to trial. Prosecutors may still be in the discovery stage of the lawsuit.

I think this is questionable. I would agree that this is the pattern for past promos of this nature, but none of those ships ever had anything close to the pre-existing demand for this one. We'll have to wait and see if the pattern holds.

Lockboxes are no more "gambling" than, for example, trading card games where you never know what's in a card pack until you open it.
  • staq16staq16 Member Posts: 1,181 Arc User
OP, the big difference is that (on the macro level) someone has to pay for these ships; you can grind out Dil / EC but someone has to pay real money to get the Zen required for R&D packs into the system. Plus this is heavily time-gated, the ships will only be dropping for 3 weeks. So comparing it to a 6-month rep grind is fallacious.

The "winners" at this point will be those who've been grinding up their reserves for years and can now buy the ships. I'd been doing that in the expectation that at some point Cryptic would drop stuff I had to have... but never anticipated the double whammy of a lockbox Bird of Prey plus an R&D pack Battlecruiser.

No, I did not expect an R&D Pack Promotion as the R&D Weekend was in September after the Event and it was way too early for another Lockbox. After the $130 AoY Pack and the Kelvin Lockbox making them money hand over fist one could hope that we would get something worthwhile for the celebration at the 50th. Not deluded, as I do expect much, as in, I never cared or clamored for an endgame Constitution. Never even flew the lower Tier one when leveling up.

I assume that the R&D Promotion Packs will not be 20% off for this 'Event' as they will probably have that sale for the R&D Weekend.

Will I get a T6 TOS Constitution? Probably not except my TOS Character will probable pick up the Kelvin one after the Kelvin Lockbox is added to the Infinity Lockbox (after the second Lockbox released post-Kelvin Lockbox - in about six months).

What we could use is a Lobi Store Sale as this is about the time of year that they usually have one. And especially given that they seemed to not 'know how to' award Daily Account Lobi Awards during the Featured Episode Rerun (non)Event a few months ago. They do not have to fear that the Lobi used during the Sale was free but came from their Infinity/Kelvin/R&D Promotion boxes.

Will we get a Zen Charge Bonus to spur sales of these R&D Packs? Not having one exposes the true nature of the festive 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Maybe for the 50th they can give out a free TOS Themed Party Amplifier Account Unlock. Just think of what 'those people' can use it for in celebration of this R&D Pack Promotion. :)
