Ground weapons - want to re-arm my team...

Hey all

Just been playing in the Dyson sphere on the ground battlezone. I managed to kill a V-Rex (along with a couple of other people in the area I suspect) and made about 8k dil in about 30 minutes.

Sokath, his eyes opened!

Anyhow, I have come to the conclusion that my ground setup is pants, I've had this feeling for a while now when doing story missions...

Here's what I have weapons wise -

Kirk (me) - Rare phaser full auto rifle mk xii [crtd] [dmg]
Anton Chekov (Tactical) - Rare phaser assault minigun mk xii [dmg]x2
Teresa Ross (Enginerring) - Uncommmon phaser full auto rifle mk xii [dmg]
Leonard McCoy (Medical) - Uncommon Phaser pulsewave assualt mk XI [CrtD]
Sp'ock (Science) - Uncommon Phaser pulsewave assualt mk XI [CrtH]
Hikara Sulu (Tactical) - common Phaser beam pistol standard issue
Montgomery Scott (Engineering) - common Phaser stun pistol mk IV

Usually my away team consists of me (obviously), along with Chekov, Ross, Spock and/or McCoy (I default to Chekov and Ross when the full team isn't allowed).

I don't think I've ever taken Sulu or Scotty hence why they're poorly armed.

Ross has a shield generator ability which I'm sure is very useful.

All have personal shields of varying degrees.

Please can anyone recommend me a better weapon for myself, I feel my phaser full auto rifle is a bit pants (it seems to be slow firing and doesn't do a lot of damage), and perhaps some better ones for the rest of my crew.

Also any tips on good shields and armour so that I (and the other members of my crew) can take more damage and not constantly have to call for help or respawn would be appreciated.

Stuff I can obtain via the exchange for reasonable prices (i.e. not millions) would be preferable.

Some recommendations for Klingon and perhaps Romulan equipment would also be appreciated.

TIA

I use for "me" a sniper rifle in the first slot and either a pulsewave assault or a melee weapon in the second slot. The sniper rifle has the best range and the pulsewave gives me good AoE for crowd control. The melee weapon is for borg (no remodulation required) and large enemies like Fek'Ihr who have a surprising weakness to the knockback. Armor is either a reputation item or Polyalloy Weave. And lastly Shields which in my opinion are all "pants", will either be from a reputation or have some mod that hits the enemiy back if they hit me.

For my AoY I tend to have the following:

Me: Romulan Navy Gear, TR116B, Romulan Repeater Rifle

Engineer 1: Na'khul ground set, the one you get from the mission that I've temporarily forgotten the name of.

Tactical: Jem'Hadar ground set from the 2800 arc

Science: Dyson suit, the CRM 200 (the freeze ray from Cold Storage) and a VR shield that came as a mission reward.

Engineer 2: The armour and shield from the Yesterday's War arc and the fluidic antiproton dense beam gun from one of the Delta Arc missions.

On my main tac I just slot in all the reputation ground sets I've accumulated over the years.

Pulsewaves are not a good choice for BOFFs. Pulswaves do less damage the farther you are from a target, and BOFFs lack the AI to get more than minimum range before they shoot them. Also, avoid giving them Sweeping Strikes or Dampening Field or Cover Shield. They lack the AI to intelligently use any of these abilities.

For quick and dirty advice, phaser split beam rifles pair well with phaser wide beam pistols. Obviously, going for higher Mk and rarity is preferred.

I'm guessing you want to stay with the phaser flavor? You have a few options. The 2 piece set bonus from the Counter-command set (from Undine Rep and the mission Surface Tension) gives bonus phaser damage and critical hit chance. The Delta Alliance set is extremely tanky, while the Adapted MACO set is a little more balanced.
Also any tips on good shields and armour so that I (and the other members of my crew) can take more damage and not constantly have to call for help or respawn would be appreciated.
On the cheap, you can replay "Uneasy Allies" for Romulan Navy Combat Armor. It upgrades to Mk XII for free, has really good defenses and increases the damage on secondary energy attacks by 50%. For shields, you can replay "Empress Sela" for the Personal Covariant Shield.

More pricey options, you can get them sets from the Undine, Delta or Omega reps.

You can get a pretty decent armor from "Core of the Matter" (level 23) in the Yesterday's War story arc. It rewards a Neutronium Laced Armor which is pretty good for a free armor early in the game. The mark level of the armor rewarded by playing the mission scales up based on your level. I am going to assume you are between levels 50 thru 59 so completing the mission will reward you with the Mk XI version. The armor will allow you to upgrade it to Mk XII for free once you reach level 60. To improve it beyond Mk XII you will need to use upgrade kits. The Yesterday’s War Story Arc begins after the Klingon War story arc.

After completing “Core of the Matter” the Yesterday’s War story arcs moves to after the Cardassian Struggle and continues with “Vorgon Conclusions” (level 46) where you can get the Dielectric Oscillation Personal Shield. It’s a pretty decent shield, but currently the stats for it is not available on the internet. I am assuming it is rewarded as a Mk XI version and can be upgraded to Mk XII for free.

    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Mission:_Vorgon_Conclusions

The above mentioned Romulan Imperial Navy set (RIN) can be obtained from “Uneasy Allies” late in the game since it is the 1st mission in the Iconain War story arc; it is a level 56 mission. In my opinion, this is the best free set you can get. The armor, shield and class specific kit makes a complete set. Unforunately, you can only obtain the armor and shield once because once you have it you cannot get it again. Therefore, you cannot outfit yourself and your entire away team with the armor and shield. The armor and shield can be upgraded to Mk XII for free assuming it is a Mk XI reward.

The Na’kuhl Temporal Operative set (NTO) is a very good set to that you can acquire multiple times so that you and you away team have the armor, shield and weapon. You need to play “The Temporal Front” in the Future Proof story arc to get this set which basically means this is an “end game” set since there are only two more main story missions after “The Temporal Front”. In my opinion, the armor and shield is second best to the RIN set; I find the red shield to be rather distracting when it gets activated on the player character. I don’t really like the weapon which completes the 3 piece set so I simply give my away team the armor and shield which meant I needed to play this mission 8 times per character if I wanted the away time to have the armor and shield 2 piece set.

    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Mission:_The_Temporal_Front

Alternative armors can be obtained by playing “A Gathering Darkness” in the Borg Advance story arc which rewards you with a choice of different Mk XI armors with the [HP] [RegHP] [RegSH] modifiers. The armors are only awarded at Mk XI and you will have to use upgrade kits if you want to improve them beyond Mk XI.

    [HP] = Extra hit points
[RegHP] = Improves you HP regeneration rate
[RegSH] = Improves shield regeneration rate

I typically choose Energy Dampening Armor since most attacks against you are energy based. My AoY captain is currently in the Solanae Dyson Sphere story arc so I do not yet have access to the RIN or NTO armor for this character. This character is currently using Energy Dampening Armor variant that has been upgraded to Mk XIV. My away team all currently wear the Neutronium Laced Combat Armor MK XII.

A good mission to get free personal shields is “Jaberwocky” where you can get the Personal Shield Mk XI [Cap] [Reg]x2 if you are between level 50 and 59. The shield can be upgraded beyond Mk XI but you need to use upgrade kits. Currently I use a combination of the Dielectric Oscillation Personal Shield and these shield rewarded by this mission for my AoY Captain; all are Mk XII.

Personally i find the weapons from http://sto.gamepedia.com/Mission:_Night_of_the_Comet to be quite useful as well.

Once you get to the point where you purchase reputation gear then http://sto.gamepedia.com/Omega_Force_(Ground)
is a must. Good stats on its own and team bonus.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

If you are looking for phaser weapons, then I recommend you play Night of the Comet in the Klingon War Story arc where you can choose one of two weapons, the Type 3 Phaser Rifle and the Type 2 Phaser Pistol both of which should be rewarded at Mk XI. The Type 3 Phaser Rifle is different from the version you get from the Agents of Yesterday Expansion. The AoY version simply has a chance to knock your enemy back on the secondary fire mode. The Type 3 version from this mission has a 50% chance of a Nadion Burst secondary attack which has an area of effect that can knock down enemies and cause some damage.

Other than that it’s probably best to look for rare phaser on the Exchange, they should not be very expensive. I tend to avoid pulsewave assault rifles. Split beams are pretty popular and can be more expensive than other types of weapons, auto fire, high density and sniper rifles are also good options along . For a 3 person team I would probably go with a mix of 2 split beams and 1 high density. Although I have done the Dyson Battlezone with everyone using the Type 3 Phaser Rifle.

For very rare weapons, I generally prefer them to have the [CritD] [CrtH] modifiers since that combo increases the chance of a critical hit and also do additional critical damage.

Thanks guys. I bought a couple of Anti-proton split beam rifles the other day as I read elsewhere they're pretty good. Seem to work better than what I had at least.

Still die a lot though, but I was finding the other night I seemed to be the only person in the areas on the battlezone so I was taking on everything myself. I seem to fare better when other players are in the area.

Wish I could get useful phaser rifles that look a bit canon (preferably like the First Contact rifles (I'm aware Janeway's Compression Rifle is available via the Delta rep but I've not even started that yet!!), not like the TOS Type 3 one).

Really need to sort out my KDF character though, he's armed with dual disruptor pistols of some mark, and my 2 Boffs aren't equipped well at all either, I gave up trying the battlezone with my KDF guy because I couldn't do anything but die!!

What would be good for KDF/Romulan characters?

My KDF/Roms usually have (all MK XII+):
= Herald Kit with [KPerf] [Weapon] [+Energy Flavor]
    = Universal Module "Solar Gateway"
= Energy Dampening Armor [AP] [Phys] [RegHP] or Iconian 3 piece set*
    = Shield [Ap] [Cap] [Reg]*
    = (Energy Flavor) High Density Beam [Dmg]x2 [KB3] / (Energy Flavor) Pulsewave [Dmg]x2 [KB3]*
= Tribble [+2.5% All Dmg] (I use special devices you may not have/get yet like the Frosted Boots) + Large Hypos + Large Shield Charges.

Almost all Away Teams used for Voth BZ are/have:
    = 2 Command Engineering BOffs
= Both have Return Fire III / 1 has Medical Generator I and the other Shield Generator II / Both have Shield Recharge II / 1 has Shock and Awe I the other Hammer and Anvil I
= Energy Dampening Armor [AP] [Phys]
    = Shield [Ap] [Cap]
= Rom Plasma Piercing Beam Rifles (usually with [Dmg] [KB3])
= Tribble [+2.5% All Dmg] + 1 Large Shield charge + 2 Large Power Cells (these are constantly cycled, which is a good thing, so carry extra and refill out of action).

I use Rep sets on BOffs but the aforementioned is on the majority.
There is no real difference in ground combat between KDF/Rom/Fed...pretty generic.

I like having an engineer with mines and one turret for the voth bz. The turret attracts artillery fire, and mines are great against the stealthy spec ops and fast dinos.

But really there's lots of ways to make it work.

The best weapons you can give your bridge officers are long range AOE weaponry. Longer range is a lot better than even close range AOE weapons because it allows your bridge officers to acquire targets easier without them having to run up to you and thus scatter the group.

The most powerful of these weapons are those that provide AOE with primary fire like the Lobi Herald Advanced Projector and the Jemhadar minigun. The Herald staff is amazing and for two sole reasons that it chains without requiring targets to be within a cone and because it has nearly the same range as a sniper rifle. The Jemhadar minigun comes next but it has shorter range and does have that cone.

After that I think the two second very best long range AOE weapons you can get are the Romulan Plasma Wide Beam Rifle and the Dyson reputation rifle. The first one is like a split rifle but unlike the split fire with 3 targets in a 25 degree arc in its AOE mode, the Romulan Wide Beam rifle will do 5 targets in 35 degrees. It's like a better split rifle.

As for the Dyson rifle, it has a dual mode allowing for great versatility. It can be a sniper or a scatter gun. It also has expose on both primary and secondary, and can be combined with the Command specialization for even more expose chance.

So if it is survivability, versatility and strong ground performance you want then there is really no reason to settle for anything less than these weapons... unless you simply just like trying different weapons, role playing and so forth. :)

I went with all my assault team being armed with the delta rep phaser compression rifle. It's got a decent rate of fire with a pulsewave secondary and the best part all those orbital bombardments :D
