I started playing about a week ago, had no idea that an expansion was coming until the day before (a few days after i started playing)
It seems like new players should make Agents of Yesterday characters but even though i havent gotten very far with my standard starfleet character (level 19) Ive become attached to him and the crew and dont want to start over
I made an AoY character, just to see what i was missing (the AoY opening is much better than the standard starfleet opening) and at level 10 the missions go back to the same missions that ive already played (level 20 seems to go back to unique AoY content)
You also get special level rewards from that AoY item that ill be missing
I was just wondering, how much i will be missing out on if i continue playing the character i made right before the expansion released?
I know i wont be getting those level rewards (the level 10 rewards gave me 5 Mk IV blue ship items, all were as good as or better than the stuff my level 19 starfleet character has), which makes me think ill be missing out on a lot by not playing an AoY character
Infact, I feel like Im being punished for not playing an AoY character, they seem to get everything a standard starfleet character can get and more

to answer your question and maybe give a suggestion I would keep both play your AoY character get it thru to 60 if you so choose then do the same with your first character then you can collect rewards from the temperal officer from ESD on that character. also what you might do is go to the web site and find the info on the AoY expansion and read some of the blogs on it to get some info of what is going on I would go all the way back to the blog that announce the expansion and read it and since you were not in the game back a few years ago you might get lost when it mentions the delta recruit event which is similar of what is going on now with the AoY temperal agent event just better in a sense. now if you were wanting to create another faction character at a later date you did receive a free character slot when AoY launched so you should still have two slot left over to make whatever you decide to do later.
if you have question ask around in game as well as in the forums I am sure I will not be the only one to reply to this but if your ingame and are stuck and no one will seem to answer something for ya send me a pm @BlkBugHunter i'll be happy to answer your question to the best of my ability, I have been playing for almost six years now (six years in September) and have 31+ characters. anyways hope you enjoy the game and maybe I will see you out there. Ultimately, you should play whatever content or character is most fun for you. There isn't anything that you absolutely have to have either way, you're not going to miss out on anything you absolutely must have.
The advantage of doing the recruit first might be that once you come to your other character, you can cash in all the account-wide perks. But that will probably only really feel relevant once you start doing endgame things. Before that, marks, dilithium, Mark XIII Ultra-Rare Rep gear will not really matter to you. And it will be a significant time investment on the AOY character before you are at the point you actually have htem all unlocked.
So I think - at this point you're fine playing whatever character you feel like.
The reputation system becomes available to you once you reach level 50. Assuming you are an extremely dedicated STO player with plenty of time on you hands, you play one queued mission per day that is associated with each of the 9 reputation systems. Doing so will mean you can get to Tier 5 for all reputations in 40 days. The time it takes to complete each queue mission varies, but generally speaking it would probably take around 2.0 to 2.5 hours per day excluding waiting time for enough players to join the various queue missons. People have gotten up to level 50 within 7 days or less... boy they have a lot of time on their hands...
The reason why ultra rare Mk XIII is a big deal is because there is a cost to upgrade gear from Mk XII to Mk XIII. You need to purchase upgrade kits and tech accelerators from the Exchange and you need to use refined dilithium as well. Generally speaking it should cost less than 1 million EC and probably about 5,400 dilithium to go from Mk XII to Mk XIII. On the other hand improving the quality of gear from very rare to ultra rare... well, that can be pretty expense because it relies on chance. Many players have upgrade very rare Mk XII gear to Mk XIV (highest mark level) and the gear still remains very rare. Upgrading very rare Mk XIV to ultra rare can definitely be very expensive. And of course attempting to push it to epic quality would be even more expensive. That's tens of millions of EC and thousands upon thousands of refined dilithium which by the way there is a max of 8k dil players can refine per day. That can be boosted to another 1k every other day if you join fleet that has a dil mine.
Many veteran players probably see this as another grind since they already have plenty of captains who have already maxed out most of the reputations. And for those that have already upgraded the vast majority of their gear to Mk XIV, AoY is a waste of time.
The best recommendation I can give is to just have fun. Eventually your AoY captain will max out all the rep system so that other captains on your account can enjoy the rewards. The only caveat is that your AoY captain must reach the 25th century before the 6 week long AoY event ends. When you reach the 25th century within that 6 window, you will get a temporal device that allows you to find temporal probes that unlocks some of the rewards. Once you get the temporal device, you can take your time to reach level 50 and beyond if you wish.

Just wanted to provide better information....
The queue missions generally provides 90 or so marks with the daily bonus (55 marks I think) for the specific reputation they are related to. Advancing through the reputation tiers require players to do a 20 hour long project that needs 30 marks as well as 15k EC and some XP. That means doing a single queue mission can provided players with enough marks to do that specific reputation project 3 times. Sometimes less than 90 marks are rewarded; it can depend on if optional objectives have be completed.
As an example, Infected: The Conduit is a queue mission that takes place in space against the Borg. It rewards Omega Marks for the Omega reputation system. While "Infected: The Conduit" is the official name players generally refer to it as ISN (Infected Space Normal) or ISA (Infected Space Advanced).
I've decided to just continue my standard starfleet character as my main, and then ill go back to the AoY character once i either get bored with my main, or max out everything i can on him
I didn't mean that, i meant the quest you get from Daniels at level 20 on an AoY character, its listed in the available missions list, i looked at that list to see what was new up to level 20 once i hit 10 and saw that it just repeated the same stuff
Thanks for your responses
yeah I did not notice that until tonight actually just got my AoY toon there and relized that was what you were talking about sorry bout that. and my AoY character is actually 30 now for that quest line but that is because I am a lifetime subscriber and get a bit more xp per mission but still.
All Federation captains can use all of the Kelvin Timeline Federation starships as long as they are at least level 50. Note: Ships that come from lock boxes and the Lobi Store are bound to the character that opens the package. These ships are definitely not available for other captains on your account.
There is no way to change sound and visual effects. If you do not like the 23rd century effects, then do not create more than one AoY captain.
IE keep your original, make a new, and try out all the different types of captains

I think the only ship that can't cross at all in either direction is the freebie 23rd century ship.

But also, you don't have to run both of your characters through the missions if you don't want to; at level 11 you unlock the Duty Officer system (or doffing as it is often shortened to) and you can use that to level one, or both, of them.
Once you have the doffs you need, you can just log on once onto the character you don't want to really play, set up their missions, then log them off; and personally I set them once each day and leave them to it, I have 3 characters going through the process of just being doffed from 11 to 52, from there they'll use admiralty as well (which is like doffing, only it uses ships instead of people) to get to 60, at which point I'll actually start doing stuff with them.
Speaking pragmatically, the most logical route is to play the AoY character through the missions for the rewards and doff your main up, then once your AoY character is set get your main done
