I'm starting on end-game upgrades and they are pricey. I'm working on reps and can get gear sets there but there's an infrastructure to put in place (DOFFs, traits, etc). I'm looking at a Narcene ship going for $350M EC and gear/ traits I want go for $25M+ EC. Playing content to end game earned me a few million EC which was quickly eaten up just buying VR DOFFs I wanted. I have read basic strategies for getting EC before but I need a lot of EC if I'm going to gear multiple ships/ characters. I'm currently paying real world cash for master keys and selling them for 5.5M EC each. Not bad but a lot out of pocket for the Narcene. I know the game changes all the time and strategies emerge all the time. What are some best practices elite players are using at end game to EC for get gear and ships? Thanks

The best strategy is not to become obsessed with having the best gear. This game is run by an Asian company and its built to milk you dry no matter which strategy street you drive down.

This. Never buy while looking at the "all" tab, because sometimes it displays the correct prices, other times it truncates listings. For example, Torp Spread III manuals; normally somewhere between 100k EC and 150k EC. But, if you get the bug, you see results for ten times the price, if not more. (at least for me, using TS3 manuals is fairly consistent to activate it)
What I sometimes do is purchase items on the Exchange that I think are undervalued. I purchase them knowing that there is a risk that even I may have overpaid for the item, but that is the risk when playing the market. For example, I purchased 2 or 3 Plasmonic Leeches off the Exchange for the purpose of relisting them at a higher price. I bought them for 13m or 14m each. Last night the price of the Leeches started to climb up again since the Infinity Lock Boxes were gonna go away; they were 24m EC when I checked. I will probably list them for 60m EC each next week. The Leech is not a big risk at all since there is always a demand for them in the Fed faction.
I made a much riskier purchase maybe about 2 months ago. I purchased one Agony Phaser Beam Array Mk II [CRTD]x3 for 10m EC. There is quite a demand for Agony Phasers and I estimated I could sell it for 20m EC, or double my investment. I eventually sold it for about 18m EC, but it took longer to do so than I had thought.
Last night before going to sleep, I made another "risky" investment. I purchased a couple of T5 APU Cruisers for 2m and 2.5m ECs. They generally sell for about 5m or 6m EC each, so I should not have to wait too long to double my minor investment.
As for luck... I was searching the Exchange for Mk XII ship shields. For whatever reason I decided to do a search for [Cap]x3 and found a Resilient Shield Mk XII [Cap]x3 selling for 250k. I quickly purchased it and then relisted it for 6.67m EC. The next least expensive Mk XII shield that had [Cap]x3 was selling for 10m EC. It was a quick 6m EC for me since the shield was purchased within 3 hours.
Starbase 24 queue can be solo'd fed side and the drops are pretty substantial.
Get a kdf alt and farm contraband.
Craft mk 2 beams. Sell the ones with critdx3 dmgx3 or pen+any mix of critd and dmg.
Don't try to compete with the whales hoovering up and relisting the ultra rare items, concentrate on mid-range stuff gets the best result I find.
Of course the infinity box has added a whole new level to the game. Stuff will, I suspect, drop in prices when the box is active and shoot up again in between. So you can get some nice bargains and save a few choice items for sale for profit.
But choosing the right items is the challenge.
Funny you say that... I bought my lifer sub back in Beta and I haven't spent another penny on the game since. I totalled it all up and given the 500Z stipend every month and subscription fee, after subtracting my initial investment, the company who runs the game has paid ME about $2000 ($20+500Z/month for 72 months).
Best game investment I ever made. :P
