Is STO canon?

ktonof1aqktonof1aq Member Posts: 210 Arc User
Star Trek Online has been the trekker susbstinance since Enterprise got cancelled. Now, with the new series coming out, I'm wondering whether any of this (STO) is going to be canon or do we ignore it? I'm fine either way but I'm just curious....IS STO CANON?

    no.

sto is not even close to canon.

First off, cannon is a weapon. You mean canon.

STO is considered "soft" canon. The shows and original timeline movies are "hard" canon.
Basically, you can consider STO to be canon, until a hard canon source overwrites STO and makes it non-canon.

STO is not canon. It's another alternate reality all of its own that contains various elements from various canon and licensed Star Trek sources, but has its own self-contained continuity.

It's easiest to explain it as, "Cryptic's take on the Star Trek universe Spock left behind after disappearing into the Kelvin Timeline."

I love your explanation. So many possibilities with that. One of my favorite episodes is TNG Parallels.

Exactly not canon. So worrying about what is and what isn't, when items are added to the game, is an exercise in futility.
  • angrytargangrytarg Member Posts: 11,001 Arc User
By definition it's not. If the new show incorporates elements from STO though those become canon (just those elements, though)

^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^

Exactly. It's canon to itself, within its own continuity just as any licensed Star Trek story product such as the licensed novels are, but, it isn't 'canon' in the broader sense as with the TV shows and films.
  • artan42artan42 Member Posts: 10,450 Bug Hunter
No. It's non-canon. Just like anything that isn't a film or TV show. It's a licenced propriety but it's not canon.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

All that being said, this is a VERY squishy issue. There has been no canon update to the prime universe after the events of the 2009 movie. So while STO is not screen canon, it's literally the only sanctioned Trek moving forward from that event. With all rumors pointing to the new show taking place between the Kirk and Picard time periods, that is unlikely to change anytime soon.

So basically, it's not officially screen canon, but it's literally the only canon there is at this point, making it the definitive canon at this point in time. Kinda scary, right?

STO is considered "Soft Canon" like books and comics. Where it takes Star Trek as a basis and goes from there. In turn creating fun gaming time to escape the crazy normal day life. To make all fans happy, they try to use a little from all Star Trek: movies, shows, and sometimes the books.

Why do people put so much importance on "canon"? All it's defined as is "generally accepted as genuine", as in a mere popular opinion. What we really should be discussing are continuity establishments.

Because of countless alternate universes everything is canon, from STO to Star Trek P'orn parodies.

    But its not Prime Universe.

I dunno about all this 'hard' or 'soft' canon stuff. I just know I like playing STO most days. I have also met some very fine people ingame and here whose company I enjoy. Whose opinions are well thought out and expressed succinctly
This is more than enough for me. So I have a pair of questions.

Why do people expect this game to be more than it is?
And whose fault is it really when the game does not live up to their overly lofty expectations?

When in a multiverse that spawns different timelines/universes for different choices, it really stops being a question of canon vs. none canon or even soft canon vs. hard canon, it becomes Prime Universe vs. None Prime Universes such as the novel universes, JJverse, Mirror Universe, what I call the P'orn Universes.

this game lost its canon mark when it allowed players to fly the undine (or Species 8472) ships.

Canon in what respect? The star ships? No way! Most of the ships in game have never been in any of the series or movies. They're just designs that have similarities with various ships that have been in the Star Trek series or movies. But Banana Pancakes being one of the most popular foods...that's canon! I love the smell of Banana Pancakes and Raktajino in the morning...it smells like...BREAKFAST!

I think it's a form of insanity. There's only one real definition, but that definition has been redacted. The innumerable fan definitions are worth about as much as the paper they may or may not be printed on.

I usually enjoy playing the game myself. Currently I'm rushing my Ferasan through the arcs to get him the prizes that have been brought back. I'll also be taking my others through the final story to get the ones who don't have them the prizes too.

I don't expect any more than what I've been given, and it's usually fun.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything. :D

Until it's referenced or depicted either on TV or in a movie no, none of STO is canon.

STO is bat-TRIBBLE crazy, so no. Multiverse Star Wars / Star Trek fanfic mashup hentai is more canon then this debacle.

No it hasn't. It can still be found by a bit of looking. Until a new one is issued the old one stands.

No one knows whether the new series will be based in the prime or kelvin universes until the announcement / questions and answers session at SDCC, but you can almost be assured that it won't legitimize STO. STO's story exists to serve the gameplay, so it would be unnecessarily restrictive for a TV show or movie.

It might steal interesting bits (ships, planets, race names, etc), though, which is something that the Star Trek television teams have done before. Enterprise referenced the rad RPG sourcebook for Andorians, "Among the Clans," for instance.

While we don't know until they say, CBS would have to pay Paramount if they used the KT, and won't if they do prime, so chances are we'll be seeing them use prime.

    IS STO CANON?

Yes. Absolutely. It's hard canon for my head canon. I call it heard canon. I really only count things that are on Holodeck, not on Tribble. As too much on Tribble is subject to rewrites.

I know it seems confusing but I've gone ahead and compiled the ultimate compendium on all things Trek. Currently I've used a 0.5 mm Micron Pigma ink pen to fit two lines of text per ruled line in 42 separate composition books, but I'm almost done with this project. I have about 3 or 4 more gold key Star Trek comics to fully immerse myself in and then I'll be ready. The plan is to have my friend use her document scanner and then post every scanned page of the Star Trek H(e)a(r)d Canon Compendium for all to read, memorize and follow.

After that I plan to unravel the DC Multiverse once and for all!

    Excelsior!

    ;)

IMO - it'll be interesting to see if any stories in the upcoming Star Trek (2017) series involve anything taken from the STO storylines. Remember that over the years the various Star Trek series incorporated elements from 'soft canon' sources here and there.

It's not canon unless CBS says it is. Bear in mind though, the storylines have to be authorised by CBS, as Cryptic has previously said.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
