Over time I have stored away literly hundreds of lock boxes. I open a few now and then just for giggles and a shot at rare stuff and of course Lobi. With the new infinity boxes are the old ones still valid or are they just junk now?
I can't say I've seen any circumstance under which I'd open an old lockbox over an infinity lock box. The new ones can give you some weird surprises like a squad of Ferengi doffs, but for any substantial prize your-choice wins.

Not sure how it works, but say I was going for a Plasmonic Leech. Wouldn't opening a Tal Shiar lock box technically give me better odds then an Infinity since the total list of available prizes is so much smaller?

same odds, the infinity box would just give you your choice of console reward.

We'll have to see how percentages shake out but at the moment I'd say the odds are still dramatically more in your favor going with the infinity box - because you're simultaneously taking a shot any ship you want, the best space trait imaginable, the best 'second prize' ship available, AND the console of your dreams. Basically it looks like each your-choice box has the combined odds of all the choices in it in a normal box so a console is just as likely and ground and space traits are effectively more likely (because BOTH traits are amalgamated into a single completely flexible box). Plus every box is a crack at an ultra rare instead of just the two boxes that formerly offered them.
In the upper tier rewards there are simply no stinkers, because you can grab the best-in-category for every category. If you lose some miniscule likelihood of that one precise item you want, you more than make it up on the RAIN of "well, damn, I can find a use for THAT" drops.
While my sample size is not representative, out of 32 boxes I got 3 consoles of-my-choice (plasmonics for everyone!), 2 space traits of-my-choice (ROM and FED mains are both Inspirational Leaders now), and two ground traits of-my-choice (Still choosing...). It was a RAMPAGE through the loot tables... I would also have expected ~150 lobi and instead got closer to 300.
I have seen a marginal case made for Cardassian boxes if you consider the potential Doff amongst the most valuable items in the game... but yeah even those drop from Infinite boxes so for the other 99 times out of 100 there's just no contest.

Still no contest. If you fail to get a Galor or Zemok box, with the Cardassian box, then you just plain failed. However, you can still at least get a space trait that's worth something, or kemocite, or something that's less of a fail from the infinity box.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

I suggest if you have some left like the herald ones to drop them on exchange right away while they still hold some value. With the infinity box the old ones have become completely obsolete. Why open an old box and risk getting a white common doff pack for instance or a TRIBBLE catalyst when you can open an infinity box and at least get something useful.

My proof?
Yesterday there were just over 20 Plasmonic Leech consoles on the market with the cheapest one going for right around 70M.
Right now, there are 88 of them and the cheapest one is going for 22M.
It does seem that the ability to choose rewards gives the Infinity Box far better odds. I'm just dumping my old boxes, no point in keeping them.
I would be genuinely shocked if you make more than an average of 5 ec per box for the old ones.
That was my STO 401k, and now theyre worthless?

They make a wondrous mess of things. Brave amateurs, they do their part.
