Personal Shields - Yes or No

Admitting curiosity got the better of me and i watched a youtube which portrayed the first few missions for the Agents of Yesterday.

Something i noticed was that both the player and NPC wield a personal shield. The personal shield generators were not yet invented during TOS and IMO it'd be best if they were disabled for all until the AoY players get recruited to fight future stuff (assuming that will happen).

This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Cryptic has decided to keep personal shields for gameplay reasons. The early missions are the tutorial and introduction in the game, and so it needs to be introduced early. And hiding all the personal shield UI and the loot drops would also require a lot of technical work for a short term benefit.

I can understand the reasoning, but the AoY expansion derives its greatest strength from the immersion in TOS.
As such i believe that something as significant as personal shields should be removed from the early missions for player and NPC.

The solution may be as simple as not offering personal shields until after the tutorial and recruitment as temporal agent.

Another way to go about this would be to apply a dampening field or interference to those specific maps so shields would effectively be disabled. From the mechanics point of view the latter may be the easiest to implement.

Or as I suggested once: special shields with zero shield capacity but a significant dodge chance, which would fit the TOS feeling of easy and obvious misses due to questionable 60s choregraphy.

    Interesting idea.

If you have a serious problem with the personal shields thing the best way you can probably rectify it in canon is to say that they're life support shields from TAS or possibly prototypes.

personal shields were used in the TOS timeline, in particular a few episodes of TAS... they strapped around the arm and at one time i recall one being a belt... some were used in the episode Spocks Brain...

Or you can just unequip them on your away team and just see enemy NPC shields as some kind of ablative armor under their uniforms.

I like that idea and I would say it'd be a great way to add authenticity tot he expansion while still maintining the basic gameplay.

Unfortunately, and it really saddens me to say this, Cryptic doesn't really go all the way. A lot of things are just touched but never completed all the way because of too much effort for too little gain and so most we get is a coat of paint to gloss over things. Real Trek authenticity should be where STO really hits the mark, especially for a fanbase that can be very "accurate". But since the game is still designed for players with no knowledge of Trek (and thus wouldn't care) while the people that really care only get the shinies without substance. It's half of a deal for both groups.

It's the same reason you have access to the ship's replicator from the start to. There's nothing like equipping your BOFF's with frequency remodulators :p

Mr. Gecko said that They thought about going without the personal shields, for about a minute...

Then realized it would mean a complete overhaul of the entire game, to account for the loss of this item for just the TOS toons.

He said too many other items are connected to the personal shield mechanic for it to be cost effective for the change.

He even said that he personally considers the "Life Support Belt" from The Animated Series, as a way to fudge this in ones own head-canon.

Too bad He also said that The Animated Series, ISN'T part of this particular expansion...

The flagged for moderation thing usually means you embedded a link that the forum didn't like.

There's a limit to "accuracy". Eventually you have to accept the limitations of being a computer game.
