Playing as a Borg in the Collective wouldn't be fun. It'd basically play for you, and you'd only watch, OP.

Playing as a member of the Borg Cooperative or some other Liberated Borg faction is a possibility. In order to play as the Borg in STO, it would require integrating RTS like Starcraft into a MMO. It would make for some interesting PvP, but we all know the chances of the STO devs doing anything with improving PvP.
Playable Borg is what I have decided to use as my queue to say 'the game is dead' and stop playing.
I really think they're saving it for that one last cash grab once the game starts to get in danger of shutting down. Personally, I hope the day never comes.
I could see playing as the Borg Cooperative, since their ships tend to have clear Fore/Aft indicators, which would otherwise be a big problem if you have perfect geometric shapes (I ran into similar problems with the APU cruiser), and would allow some variety in ship design to fit the necessary diversity.
I think it would be hilarious if Lifers got special unlockable "Regular Human/Klingon/Romulan" playable captains for a Borg Cooperative faction.
I agree that we won't really be seeing the borg collective as playable, since honestly I am not sure you would actually see much individual promotion, or control in the faction/race with it being that most of the borg that showed some semblance of being more than a drone were extremely rare. Now the Borg cooperative would be a good alternative to the collective for a race borg race, which might be part of as delta quad faction that might show the state of events leading up to when the fed/rom/kdf factions actually finally arrived in the delta quad leading into the Vaadwaur war events (voth is one race I also would love to see, but not holding my breath.).
It sounds fun until you imagine esd space filled with 30 or so cubes. Clutter. Trolls would start greifing with cube ships, forming blockades in front of esd and blocking another other entry exit point they can find. Not a good idea. Not to mention a cubes weapons layout.. what would it have ? 10 fore 10 aft ? 10 tac consoles ?
That said, spheres or probes would be just fine. They wouldn't cause the same scale or power issues so I'm all for it. A Borg lockbox has been asked for on many occasions over the years. Its been long requested. They "know" it would be their most popular lockbox to date. Their ace up their sleeve.
If I were Cryptic, I'd release a borg lockbox about 6 months to a year after the game goes live on xbone and ps4. This will be a crucial time for them, in terms of capitalizing financially on the large influx of new players. The need to use their ace. And hope for loyal players on the new platforms.
@trekpuppy , I wasn't around for that unfortunately. But.. I would love to see all the devs show up at esd in Cubes. "You think the game is too easy do you ?" And just start decimating everyone LOL ! I would totally squee event
The official word was, they wanted to do it, but ran into several problems both game-play wise and technical-wise. The first issue was that because Borg ships are uniform all over, a player flying it would have problems knowing which side their ship was facing. The second issue they had was how to animate the ships especially while going up and down.
So they started work on it, but abandoned it for "more important stuff".
If they were to actually do borg-cubes (regular/cruiser, and tactical/battle-cruiser), which I highly doubt they would, than they could have them shrank down into more of a manageable form. While also having some kind of indicator that shows the fore-side of the cube. Though i agree things like the spheres and probes would be possible lockboxes, even maybe the Octahedron though that one is harder to see so might be the highest tier with a extremely low chance of dropping in the boxes.
Have a mission where you board a damaged Borg ship, and for some reason or another you have to temporarily take control of it? You could have liberated Borg with you who operate the vessel. Then afterwards you run around to key sections setting up charges to scrap it so that such-and-such can't claim it. At the very least it would allow players to experience flying a Borg ship and get the developers feedback on how such a thing could work. (Though I agree with not wanting to see a bunch of cubes chilling around our home worlds as if they own the place).
Other possibility: As an April Fools joke, you play as a drone going about your daily duties on a cube in the middle of Borg space. That's all you do, walk around, analyze data here, assist in assimilating some poor basta interesting addition to the Collective there. Then end it with a Fed/Kling strike team beaming aboard and ending your career as a drone.
Closest you'll get is Lifer specific species Liberated Borg, with the Assimilated set on your ship.
Or just let yourself get assimilated and watch as your character attacks your team.
Yes this is how a borg faction would play, it would be like a screensaver as your character is played for you with no ability to control your character's actions.

Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
Well with the release of Agents of Yesterday, couldn't we just go back to the birth of the Borg and play as the first Borg?
Not quite since we would be at least a thousand years too late. The Vaadwaur encountered the Borg before the 15th Century, but the Borg only had a few solar systems conquered.
Since they're already in the game as a lifer perk, I'd think and hope that they won't add a Borg or cooperative faction.
Unless they were prepared to give lifers another exclusive species as compensation, but even then I think it would be more logical to just add that 'compensation species' as the new faction.
I don't see any appeal in their ships or in playing X of Y as part of the Collective. At best you would be given a bazillion fetch quests before being told to return to your alcove and wait for new instructions. At worst, as others have said, they game would play you(and this aint soviet russia even!!).
The Cooperative could be more interesting but I think most of the appeal for that faction would be in the roleplay side, and thus lost in STO.

Oh I strongly disagree. My main has always been Fed. I have a Klingon that I roleplay as a liberated borg who has established a rogue collective of her own, but I don't like Klingons so I never play her. I think Romulans are interesting, but was never able to really get into my Romulan toon ... though I think part of that is due to Romulan weaponry being trapped in the horrid reputation system. The TOS micro faction coming with AoY seems interesting, but I highly doubt my TOS will ever eclipse my existing main. Now, my Delta (the Vorta in my sig) DOES come close sometimes, but thats only because I put her in a Jem'Hadar strike ship and created a crew that basically breaks the faction system (they are all Jem'Hadar except for the mirror universe version of that boff you get in the tutorial, and a Denobulan scientist that engineered female Jem'Hadar for my Delta captain, who herself has abandoned the Dominion and is working for the Federation as a mercenary).
All that being said, if I could make a Cooperative character that toon would instantly become my new main, no matter how many exclusive missions such a faction would have. Best of Both Worlds is the reason I fell in love with Trek, First Contact is my favorite Trek movie, and Regeneration is one of my all time favorite Trek episodes. The Borg are my all time favorite Trek aliens, and the only reason that I got my lifetime sub all those years ago. I also have this hanging on my wall, which I got from Vegas ... 12 years ago? You would have hated the way things worked BEFORE the reputation system trust me. Definite lesser of 2 evils.

I actually liked the old way more TBH ... a LOT more in fact ...
Say that again when you ran your 300th CGE STF and still didn't get the M.A.C.O Phaser Battle Rifle Mk XII. The problem with praying to the RNG Gods is that some people are extremely lucky while others are extremely unlucky.

I personally love loot based systems, you play the game and always have a chance at whatever it is you're looking for, as opposed to the mindless daily click the reputation sliders and eventually you can just buy it system that always seems to make me stop playing for months on end.
Now, I'm well aware of the downsides to loot based systems, in WoW I've been soloing Ulduar (very old raid) every week for at least 2 months now looking for a pair of boots I'd like to use for customization on my Death Knight. It hasn't dropped yet, but it DOES keep me playing, but like I said the slow crawl that is the STO rep system just leads to me giving up long before I get the gear I want, because every time something comes up and I miss a day, or I forget to do my rep, or whatever, it takes that much longer and unlike with a drop system there is no chance of getting it sooner. Well, I guess if they added a .05% chance for rep project rewards to have set gear I might be tempted into doing it ...
Bottom line, I'll gladly grind daily/weekly for months for a loot based reward, but STO style rep rewards erase my desire to play altogether, because I don't find clicking time-gated buttons fun.
