Cloaking Devices: Are they worth it?

daeridanii#4438 daeridanii Member Posts: 10 Arc User
I believe that there are 6 separate ships that the Federation has that use cloaks. There is the intel set, the dreadnought cruisers and the tactical escort. So, your opinion: are cloaking devices really worth the money?
I understand that this will be dependent on your fighting style - I just want an overall impression.

Yes! Cloaks of all forms are great!

Yes, but only if it's a battle cloak.

Perhaps, but more hull points/weapons would be better.

hmm, in PVP they are really "da shiat", but in PVE they kind of seem redundent. Not saying that you can't use them to great advantage and some insane alpha strikes, but since there is no mission where a cloak offers a whole new gameplay option or optional solution, it ain't making much of a difference to have one or not.
Cool feature in the game, but not really used in a story telling tool or something of that kind.

There are missions where a cloak allows you to bypass enemies and proceed directly to the quest objectives. But a lot of missions have a lot of kill objectives. Those enemies you can't bypass.

I vote for sure why not have a cloak as long as its not built into a console

As useless in PvE as PvP is to Gecko. As are pilot ships, among other ships, and a few abilities too.

At the start of combat the decloak bonus is nice, but beyond that the usefulness is limited for regular cloaks.

Battlecloaks are more useful, but with many opponents nowadays spamming Area of effect and torpedoes dropping shields during combat is risky.

For the cloak console the usefulness is really a flip of a coin. Decloak bonus to damage is nice, but is it enough to compensate for the "loss" of a console slot?
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

    ^ This.

I like cloaks on my Romulan ships well enough. Not really interested in having them on my Federation ships. The folks that are fans of the cloak and want them on their Federation ships have as mentioned a few options. Seems like a non-starter at this point.

But then again, does anyone remember that "other" cloak? Mask Energy Signature
A snooper/spike build Nebula with MES served me wonderful for the longest time in and out of Kerrat.

Haven't gotten around to updating that incredibly reliable build on my Nebula.

To keep a long story short: each of the cloaks have their use, but it is up to the player to determine if the benefits or faults tip the scale.

For console cloak, I'll say no, because the loss of a console slot is too much. Slot MES on the go and you should be just fine - it is a nice ability after all, but I guess you could do the same with a console while out of combat if you have it already. I do that to close rifts in CPA and with high aux and proper flight I get by just fine, and then swap it out for something useful between cutscenes. While masked you can also hot-swap it out.

My defiant, fed dreadnought, and avengers still don't have cloak, though it would be nice to have access to on occasion. Intels are awesome with build in standard cloak, and I make frequent use of it in KDF and Rom ships be it standard battle or enhanced to the point that jumping in non-cloaking ships feels wrong.

Short version: buy it if you can afford the loss of a console slot and like to mix a bit of role play, otherwise get proper intels which also get their group MES effect, or just go Rom or KDF - or lobi/lockbox cause faction uniqueness is out the window and greed is eternal.

Built in Battle cloak yes... console cloak no.. I would not use a console slot solely for cloak ability.

Enhanced Battle Cloak ... totally worth it! B)

It's worth it on the Intel ships because the cloak is an innate ability.. like it should be.

As for the other ships, you need to use a console slot just to cloak and no, that's not worth it.
    Insert witty signature line here.

Most of my ships have cloak built in and I forget I have it consistently. I don't find it useful at all personally.

Built in cloaks are worth it for sure. The 3 fed Intel ships all have the ability to do some really nasty things coming right out of cloak, even the Scryer science vessel (which is probably even more lethal as it can drop a lot of shield bypassing science stuff on an unsuspecting enemy). Plus the Intel vessels have warp signature masking which can help you hide even when not cloaked.

Battle cloaks are more useful but limited to only certain ships and factions. That said I find using the Daemosh on my fed main is a wonderful luxury, being able to play with a battle cloak along with all the other tricks that Feds normally have availible.

Console cloaks I would say are not worth it unless you can spare the console slot on your build. They will nearly always mean you need to drop something else (DPS, armour, shield boosts) to make room for them and even then they are only s normal cloak.

I run the full 'stealth fighter' set on my T6 Tactical Escort, and stuff sure melts quick when I fire off a CSV coming out of cloak, but I have to admit that similar, more consistent, and overall superior results would almost certainly be achieved replacing those two consoles with Embassy consoles. I run it because I enjoy it, but I'm pretty sure there're more effective ways of doing things.

That said, (battle) cloaks have their place. The mirror invasion event can be made easier by having one player seal rifts/power emmitters and using a cloak to keep the Terrans offer their back.

Yes, but only if it's a battle cloak., that's built into the ship, not two or 3 consoles.
    Positive thoughts.

Cloak is nice, Intel are really nice for the cloak without console. As many have said losing 1 console slot for a cloak isn't that great unless you have an ambush/specialized built. Battlecloak are best and enhance battlecloak the best you can have. One thing is, fed are limited to 5 sec ambush. I love my remans with 23 sec ambush bonus, even a regular romulan can extend that to 14 sec. A superior infiltrator boff for regular fed would be nice, or even regular kdf player.

They aren't actually all that useful in PvP, given you can detect them fairly simply and have been able to for years; Fed-Roms especially can do hitting cloaked ships while cloaked, because torp-build T'varo/Malem and T3 Nebula console.
  • sunfranckssunfrancks Member Posts: 3,925 Arc User
Not really unless it is built into the ship.

So much more can be done by swapping the cloaking console for something more useful..

I like having a cloaking device on my Defiant. The slot could almost certainly be put to better use, but I like it and I don't feel like my ship is really hindered by it.

Heh I am kdf and rom player mostly and I havent cloaked in forever. Its fun, but time you cloak and try to ambush anything (unless playing solo) its already dead.
