New to the fleet system

Hi,

Can someone recommend a comprehensive guide of fleets and the rules concerning promotions, demotions, running projects, etc.? Thanks in advance.

Every fleet makes their own rules. Cryptic is 100% hands off on fleets. There's a fleet sub-forum around here somewhere but I'm too lazy to look it up for you.

You misunderstand me. I want to know how the fleets themselves work. I have been promoted to a command position, but cannot take the top slot because I cannot be promoted to that rank for some reason. I am trying to understand why that is and can find no reason or explanation for it. As the fleet rules are arcane by design, I was hoping someone here could give me some insight.

Is it cooldowns, is it a bug, is it the way I am holding my mouth? That sort of thing. Sorry for not being more clear from the get go.

What exactly do you mean with 'a command position'? I assume you're one of the highest ranks?

Only players (or alt characters) who are higher in rank than you can promote you. So if you're just below the top slot, you'll have to ask your fleet leader, whom I assume to be someone else, to promote you.

If you want higher rank then ask your fleet leader to give you said rank. Rank names can be whatever so being a "command position" could be called a "Tribble" or "Targ" in another fleet. Just a name of rank created by the leader. And if the leader(s) has logged in the last 30 days then he/she will keep the leader role.

Forget guides. Talk to your fleet leadership about how it really works. None of this promotion stuff is automated. They pick and choose themselves.

First, thanks to all that have responded. I was recently promoted to fleet leader in fleet, and they have tried to promote me to the top position, but it won't take. I can be demoted with no problem. I can be promoted to just under the top slot. But I cannot be promoted to the top slot by the person who has the privilege to do so. Nobody knows why I can't be promoted to that spot, but I can't and I was looking for answers.

I don't know if it is a cool down thing, or if there is a bug, or what. But have been working on trying to fix this for several days. If I knew the reason why, it would certainly make the solution much easier. ;-)

    Hmm... strange.

Only thing that I can think of is this:

If the highest rank in your fleet is called 'fleet leader' and the rank immediately below that one is called 'provisional fleet leader', then that may be causing confusion. A newly promoted fleet leader will always display as 'provisional fleet leader' or something like that for a certain period. So if this is the case and you are promoted to the highest rank, it may simply seem you don't have the highest rank yet because your fleet is still considering you to be a provisional leader.

If that's not it, then I honestly don't know what it could be.

Following what the others have said. The very top position in a fleet is basically the owner of the fleet. To get owner privileges someone that already has those full privileges has to promote you to it. Then you are provisional. And that has a cool down. I don't remember the length. I think it is a week. If your fleet for some reason does not have someone in the top slot it can't promote to it.
And I am not certain of this. But are you a silver member?

I am a silver member, but I have purchased numerous zen ships and have been playing for two+ years. Thanks for taking the time to respond, everyone. It's puzzling, that's for certain. I think that risian4 may be on to something. But there is no "provisional" tag on me. In fact the leader who tried to promote me that I am supposed to be replacing is still listed at the top rank, but is on the one week CD.

I was just hoping that there was some explanation as to how all this stuff works so I'd know what I was dealing with. There is a ton of info on the basics, but nothing that covers this that I have seen.

The silver member question was trying to see if it might be a restriction.
But you say the person trying to promote you is also in promotion cool down? IE they are only provisional?

    There you go.

A leader that is in cooldown (so who is either being promoted or demoted to/from top rank), looses a lot of leader privileges. I think that during the cooldown period you get exactly the same rights as the rank below Fleet leader, so as the rank 6 player. That means that as far as the mechanics of the game are concerned, your fleet leader is a rank 6 player, just like you. And this game doesn't include an option to promote yourself or others above your current rank. Therefore, since he essentially is a rank 6 player, he can't promote you up to rank 7. And that is where you have your problem.
It might even be that when your fleet is demoting a rank 7 player, nobody in the fleet can be promoted to rank 7. The entire cooldown period was a safety net anyway, implemented against both hackers and fleet leaders randomly back-stabbing each other. I do know you can only demote one Fleet Leader at a time, so there's that.

Suggestions that might work for you:
    - Stop the demotion of the fleet leader. Obviously, you can't do this, but there are probably still other rank 7 characters in your fleet. So abort the demotion, allow you to be promoted, and then have the current leader leave, to be reinvited and promoted to the rank he desires. That saves a lot of headache. Do note that currently inviting to any fleet over 100 members is broken.
    - Wait the demotion to complete, then either be promoted or claim fleet leadership through whatever means this game gives you. I never saw that situation occur, but thats that.

Actually I think you are promoted to the highest rank with most of the privileges. When I was promoted to fleet leader, I could immediately manage fleet holdings, which is restricted to the highest rank in our fleet.

So I think it's just that you cannot promote others to the highest rank while being a provisional fleet leader. And that is indeed a safey measure to prevent hostile takeovers.

OP, the total duration of this provisional status is two weeks. If the one who's trying to promote you has been provisional leader for a week, he should be able to promote you to the highest rank in another week.
