Playing story missions as a team.

I am long-time STO player, but I have almost no experience when it comes to leveling up with storymission when you are constantly in a team.

Finally got my wife onboard to start playing STO (Yay, I know).

My question is simple, how the mechanic works, because in the past when me and a friend started together, it ended with that my friend was the only one who got the mission while I was not able to get it (Wasn't able to talk to the NPC and the Mission-log was totally empty).
Might as well been a bug, but beside that and those missions that are for singleplayer only, is there something you need to think about or just punch it to warp 10 and start playing?

Thanks in Advance

When you are doing a story mission, and on a team before the mission begins the team Leader, (the person who started the team.) needs to share the mission being run. To do that they go to the mission journal, that shows the in progress missions, click the one that you are running on the right side of the screen, the mission details show at the bottom are the butttons one of which is share click that.

As for the friend and not being able to talk to the NPC I dont know, what happened. You can always go the mission journal episodes tab and get the mission from there.

I believe that in order to share the mission (required for the other person to get credit), the person the mission is being shared with must not only be high enough level, but also have missions leading up to that mission completed in order to qualify to have the mission shared with them. Even if your wife's character is high enough level, she may still need to skip some missions to get far enough in the mission journal to be able to accept the mission. Featured episodes are an exception to this rule.

My wife doesn't like to skip episodes, so whenever I play with her we always do her character's next mission rather than being able to jump forward to a mission with better rewards.

I think you should be able to talk - but if one person did already, that can advance the mission flags so the NPC is no longer available.

The only issues are when not all players actually have the mission. Players who don't have the mission can do object interacts and talk to NPCs, but when they do so it does not advance. They can participate in kill objectives though.

For teams of Fed and KDF players, just use mission replay. First play or replay is treated as the same mission. It's a bit trickier with Romulans since RR players can tag along on ANY mission that an allied player has. I once went along with a KDF player as he fought the Tal'Shiar in the Ketha lowlands on Qo'nos. Then there was that infamous thing with the DR event where two DR objectives that were meant to be just for Feds or KDF got added to Romulans. The only way to get the objective was to team with an ally while the ally played the mission.
