Haven't played in a long time ...

I'm a lifetime member that hasn't played in quite a long time. I'm thinking of starting a new character, since the later game stuff is harder to do when you don't know what you are doing. Is there anything in the store for new characters? I'm sure I have a ton of credits that accrued while I was away, and I'm not above using that to my advantage now.

I assume it does make sense to start over rather than try to play a character I already made. They are not max level, but they were max level when I left the game (level cap has gone up since then). Thoughts?

depends on how you like to play, are you going fed, kdf or romulan? save your zen that is banked up for more of the endgame ships, some of the lower level ones make leveling much easier, but again, without knowing how you plan to built your character its tough to advise

With all the missions they've revamped over the last year it definitely makes sense to start a new character. And I agree with johnnymo1, it doesn't make much sense to invest zen into lower tier ships and items since leveling up happens so fast. You would only be able to use them for a very short time.

That being said you should be aware that progress slows down considerbably once you've reached level 50. Missions won't grant enough XP to advance to the next level and you'll have to do patrols, queues, duty officer and admiralty missions to "unlock" the next mission in the story.

Hello and welcome back! I just recently returned to the game myself two months ago. So I know how you feel. Let me share my experience and you can take from that what you will:

With the level cap raise, and the way the game has shifted, running alts is a lot more time intensive. Reading up on how things were when the Delta Rising expansion hit there was a time where running alts at all was only for the most hardcore of crazy. That's eased up a bit, but still the game now currently favors having a main as your primary focus.

With that in mind, I suggest using one of your old characters. The one you felt was your main back then. The one that has the most development in traits and reputation and resources. So I'd actually not recommend starting over. Because it's a longer path.

XP was made more difficult. But it's again, been shifted back to something more reasonable in the current state. With the admiralty system in place, once you hit level 53, you can get a smoother levelling curve going. The two alts I have run to hit level 60 in the past month Have not finished all missions. Admiralty has helped a lot with that.

The point people make about the story though, is a really good one. The story is different. It's been retconned, and a lot of missions are the same basic mission with a more in depth story. So if you're in to that aspect of the game, then I definitely recommend starting over as I think you'll get a much engaging and fun overall story.

As far as resources go, save them. For the end-game. The ship you want to fly. And then the gear upgrading and traits and doffs and everything else you're going to want/need. And that's the real reason to stick to just one main and maybe a few alts ... the investment in resources at the end-game has increased a lot, making it far better to focus on one main character.

In terms of getting back up to speed ... read the forums, read STO Builds reddit (the discussion on ship builds) and play the stuff out there. Do Red Alerts, do PVE queues and just get back in to the swing of things. Do that with your main and you'll be up to speed pretty quickly. No need to go through levels 1 to 50 again for that. I mean, point blank, Infected Conduit is still the top PVE mission for parsing data, like DPS. And it's gameplay hasn't changed in 5 years. The Omega rep queues are still very active and you can get back into how to complete them in a day or two, and there you go, you have a toe hold in the end-game from which to advance your character.

Overall, I'd say, if you had an old character that you felt was your main and liked what it was and what it did ... go back to them and focus on getting them from 50 to 60, instead of doing a new toon from 1 to 60.

For KDF and Romulan-KDF you want to buy the Vandal for the Plasmonic Leech console. For feds, the Enterprise can be nice to own because you can use it to get 8 x blue phaser beam arrays that level up with you. Get the ship, take off the beams, dismiss the ship, reclaim the ship, take off the beams, ... until you have 8 of them.

Other than that, you will level up so fast that there is no real need to buy any gear below level 50 -- you'd barely get to use it.

If you really want to have better armor or weapons or whatever, you can also buy a lock box key for zen, then sell it on the Exchange for 4 - 5 million EC. Use those credits to buy gear from the Exchange.

Interesting thoughts. I like the idea of starting over to see how they have worked on the story. I noticed the tutorial was vastly improved from what I dealt with 5 years ago. I'll consider the enterprise as I am doing Fed again (I haven't touched KDF or Romulan so far). Good to know not to bother investing in any of the lower end stuff. I saw they had multi-ship packs to buy to save money. I may do that since I'm sure I'll do KDF and Romulan eventually, and will want ships there, too, when I hit 50.

    Thank you for the advice!
