When you do a space mission, how many times do you usually die and respawn? I used to be able to do whole missions without dying, but I die a lot more often now that I've reached Admiral.
While i didnt notice a big change in the no. of deaths when i first reached admiral. I did notice an increase in time it takes to burn through the hostile npc hull, ground wasnt much different. Though my experiance could be attributed to a different playstyle/setup than your prefered setup.
There isnt a right answer to this, except that as you gear up and learn the game it should fall to nearly zero. For a while, with low end gear, fragile ships, inexperience, and other such factors being blown up a bit is normal. And even if really good you get the occasional death torp spread crit or a moment of inattention will get you killed. If you are being blown up more than 2-3 times in solo content, you need to get some help (certain specific missions might be an exception, but even those, 2-3 is pushing it). The game has a flaw.. it was scaled towards people that stopped and got gear at level 50 (somewhat) and going from 40-60 without that pause to grab a few purple items and rep / fleet /new ships/etc can be very harsh for new players.
Thanks for getting back to me. If I understand, in short, either I build the ultimate wrecking machine or get used to respawns? Or, I can do missions with other players. I have a couple of ships that are adequate, but now it's time to start getting end game gear, and think about the next ships I'm going to get.

There are levels. The 'ultimate wrecking machine' can solo 5 man group content and does more damage than 5 average players combined. Its not necessary to take it that far unless you just want to. What you are shooting for is a moderate level of damage and durability that can complete the content without the deaths, which is reachable without a massive investment.
Ships and gear help, but just as important is understanding how the game mechanics really work. You can do just about anything with pretty basic gear if you know how to stack the bonuses to make the gear look good. And you can do it in some lower quality ships too. Better gear and better ships just make it easier and apply what you know to be stronger and stronger.
