My suggestion is fairly simple. Make it so when you move from space to ground the commando and pilot spec trees automatically swap. Or alternatively give us a button to set our active spec trees for ground and space seperately and have them change automatically.
As it is almost nobody uses commando simply because its annoying to manually switch and commando doesnt offer any benefit in space, if you could set it up to automatically swap commando and pilot suddenly it becomes a very viable option.
I am not a programmer so I don't know how difficult that would actually be, but it doesn't seem like it would be hard to do and it seems like pure benefit to the players without actually altering the games balance at all.

Can't count how many times I've hit an attack pattern and not got that hull buffer, or slogged around dyson without swapping traits.
The lone exception is Demolition Teams, which is the Starship Trait you get for mastering the Commando tree, but you don't have to switch specialties to activate it (Just reslot your Starship Traits), so your point is taken. Personally, I would like to have all trait and specialization choices saved to ship loadouts. Perhaps we could have a ground loadout as well. Good idea.
2. There are some...misguided people that may want to run commando and intel spec for ground.
