So I've been giving the budget build concept some considerable thought, and was curious what a true free-to-play player would have access to and what ceiling such a build would have. It makes sense to me that the everyday player just wants to have enough damage output to breeze through missions & queues, its not about setting records or min/maxing. So I decided I would do a mini series on the Mirror Universe ships since they are incredibly inexpensive.
Here's the first entry:

And kudos for actually making a video on budget ships and builds, even if gold gear isn't quite budget, it's still nowhere near leeches, conductive RCS or rare traits most of STO YouTube revolves around (and this would still work well enough with plain un-upgraded fleet gear.)
Don't worry, I'll be doing the same concept with the cruisers and different Captain Occupations!
The build uses gear accessible to every player. Theoretically, epic fleet/reputation gear is rather accessible if you grind out the dilithium. You'll note that for the weapons, and traits there's nothing out of reach!
Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for this - its exactly what I've been looking for in my New Player's Guide (my link to seaofsorrows' post was broken when the forums moved over, and he's too prolific to find his post again). My guide includes info on helping players manage once they become an Admiral - whilst your build isnt exactly cheap, it is definitely achievable without forking out real money for the game (or tens of millions of EC).
Keep making posts like this and I'll keep adding (and crediting!) them!
That's awesome! And I do realize that the epic gear seems daunting, but it is accessible through being diligent. I just don't have the capital to invest in a completely brand new set of mk xii gear. I had to scrape together fleet credit to buy 2 sets of weapons
