There's actually a way to turn those off in-game.

Press 'O' to bring up the Social menu, click the "Privacy Options" button and second or third from the bottom should be "Allow Fleet Invitations From Other Than Friends" (or something along those lines) - you just have to set it to 'No' and you'll no longer have random fleet invites.

The only drawback is that it has to be done on each character you have, it's not a 'universal' setting like graphics or sound.
"If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it's not for the timid." -- Q, TNG: "Q-Who?"
^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...

    Hi gillopi2,

Hope you find the kind of fleet you are looking for. If you want to do the legwork check out the earth spacedock subforum if you are a fed. I haven't looked at this in a while and didn't realize the new forums "hide" fleet recruiting better than they used to. The ESD fleet thread is under Federation Discussion which is a subforum of Feedback. Once you manage to track it down you can have a look and read the individual fleet pitches. Look for something that suits your fancy and suits the way you you want to play the game. There are some great fleets out there who have friendly members and sharing your time online with them will greatly enhance you experience in game. Most of the more organized fleets have and will refer you to web sites that they maintain. If a pitch on the forum interests you the next step might be to have a look there. When you find a group you like look them up online or by way of their site; Different fleets have different join procedures. Some of the hoops might seem like a pain in the TRIBBLE but thinking of vetting as the opposite of random fleet invites in social areas. Best of luck :) .
