Lately, I've been finding myself in the rep grind. I just finished the Terran reputation. Equipped all Withering Distruptor items as well as the Disruptor Tactical consoles and queued for the Terran DS9 Event. I never felt weaker.
So here's my question, with the assumption that each weapon type is situational, how do you know which type is the most effective for the encounter? Also considering damage mitigation, the Terran Event seems to be mostly Kinetic damage. I find myself dying more often from Kinetic damage than any other type. Reading the description of the rep set, you would think Phaser was the resistance to carry in. I don't think that could be more wrong. Was the reputation grind worth the time? Would I have been better off leveling the crafting system or investing in fleet credit for the fleet weapon sets? What do you think? For me, it's rather muddy as there are so many weapon types out there. Intentional or not, there's no one build to strive for, my biggest issue is I don't see a way to measure progress toward that optimization goal.
Sorry, there is lots of random thoughts in this post. Hopefully you can make sense of it.

The common approach is lots and lots of beams, although I find that for my fun builds a little torpedo action now and then is a nice little percussive closer to an argument with a foe. (PvE only, naturally--I don't do PvP.) I run an Arbiter with seven forward-facing beams (cranked-up duals on the front and 360s on the rear) because it suits the kind of play style I prefer. I know it's not "optimal" according to the standards promoted by others, but I like the way it plays, and I enjoy a little piloting more than the next captain. (No broadside barrages from me!)
I tend to like cannons in the front and turrets in the back. Then again, I'm used to playing Klingon with the BoP types. I was very excited too see the Winter Event ship capable of doing that. Boffs are optimized for the weapon type. Thinking about it, I'm a little shy on AoE and more focused on survive-ability. Same here, I detest/loathe PvP. Can I pick a harsher word? Thank you for the tip.
Dave,
I was debating on its worthiness to be upgraded. If it is worth the effort, then I totally will. Have you upgraded them, do you see a difference? Would I be better off upgrading an AP or Plasma build? Thanks for replying, it's appreciated.
It’s not easy to summarize all current preferences for everything one would want to do in game but for general pve as far as gear is concerned it can be done do determine which comes from where:
-> Weapons: crafting seems king! You want the [PEN] mod as many [Crit D] and/or [DMG] as you can get. Borg Kinetic Cutting Beam from Omega Reput is also a good choice for 2 piece set bonus. The new terran rep shines with an extremely strong special energy weapon if u happens to use disruptor as do I on 3 toons.
-> Ship core systems: Reputation, most of all for the moment Iconian Reputation with its 4 pice set.
-> Eng Consoles: Plasmonic Leech (expensive but worth it), Assimilated Module from Omega Rep to complete 2 pice set , EPS enhancing consoles, lobi consoles, Romulan Rep console.
-> Sci consoles: Fleet rules atm! Slot as many plasma explosion ones from fleet embassy and watch ur DPS rise. [+flow] ones make ur leech more potent.
-> Tac consoles: Fleet rules again! Slot as many Spire Vulnerability Locaters [+ the energy type u want to use] as you can.
Well cannons in front and turrets in aft is a playstyle which is currently not favored by a lot of people cuz beam boats are more efficient. Cannons are hard to play and work best on fast maneuverable ships. I shot myself into DPS Diamond with a cannon build escort in a pug run a while back which was the most thrilling and heart beating run I ever made in ISA. In my beam build scimitar I get similar figures out of it by now but I do so while having lunch. It’s a bit sad but it’s how the game works.
