New & very confused on Co-op instancing in STO, please help.

Greetings all!

My name is Kiriaya(Kiri to friends) and I have another new player joining this game with me, Denkir. I began on 12-14-2015, and he began 12-18-2015. We are VERY new and terribly confused. I can be a little long winded, though I will try to be as brief as need-for-clarity will allow.

We attempted to co-op run "Assimilation of Innocence" together, and though we could share the mission via the interface, upon entering the Vega System, we would end up in separate instances.
We were in a party together, started on the same instance in galaxy space... Everything I THOUGHT was needed to get the run going. Two things of note that I'm not quite certain of being factors:
-He shared the mission with me, but I was the team-leader.
-From what I've found online, the particular mission is a tutorial(though there is little learned from it, really)

We tried to start the mission multiple times, yet the issue remained persistent. Since, I have spent not a few hours scrolling through sites suggested by Google(I know, I know: First mistake  ), yet nothing found is truly Cadet friendly in terms of clarity.

So here is what I need, if anyone is willing to assist me:
A step by step walk through for players of slightly differing levels(He is Lt. rank 2, I am Lt. rank 7) on how to obtain, share, follow to, and begin a mission in the same instance. I know it may be a fair bit to type(if our own failure at the procedure is any indication of complexity), but it would be a wonderful thing for other new players to be able to have on hand somewhere and I would be forever grateful.

Thank you very much, any who can offer advice.

Yours,
Kiri

Generally when teaming the team leader only needs to start the mission IIRC. I'm not entirely sure the tutorial missions can be teamed, but I maybe wrong. If you need further assistance in-game friend me @leemwatson. I'm a player of 5 years experience in-game. I also run a Fleet, which would be beneficial to you both later on if you are interested.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

You don't have to enter together. One have to start the mission first then your mate will be able to join. If you both enter in the same time you'll end up in separated instances.
But like leemwatson said I don't think tuto missions can be teamed. Some kind a bug maybe. Try again after the tuto.
I am from Belgium and english isn't my main language, sorry if I make mistakes.

Just to repeat what everyone has said already, tutorial missions you cant play together. The first mission you can play with a team is "Stranded in Space." The best way to make sure your team is all together is once everyone has the mission, the team leader enters the mission first, once they're in everyone else follows. And just so you know, if two players are on different parts of a mission then things get weird. Depending on the mission, and who enters first, you could start from the beginning and then when you catch up to whomever is ahead they will continue to progress. Or you could start at where ever player B is later in the mission and then anyone else not at that point wont get any credit.

Also, after the tutorial, there will be some missions later on that you cannot do as a team. Missions like "Circles in Circles" will usually tell you in the opening mission description window if its solo or not.

Hi, welcome to STO. As the others have indicated, sounds like you were doing the sharing thing part all correct, however you just cannot share the tutorial missions.

If it helps, I've written a new players guide which can be found here - it'll explain the major aspects of the game in some detail for you, which you might find helpful. As always, grateful for any suggestions on how to improve it.
