So where did my Email address leak from ?

Last couple of days I have been getting SPAM Emails from a gold seller !

Since the Email address is in use with my account on STO and the forums here and given that the nature of the Email is specifically to sell me Keys and ridiculously low prices I can only assume that they have somehow managed to get my Email address from Cryptic in some way ?

It's one thing to get spammed in the game chat, but now to my own personal Email address also ?

Has there been a breach that I/We should be made aware of ?

    This sounds serious. I'll keep an eye out for my mail adress.

    And this also sounds like it need an answer and a solution.

    Did you have the "Allow other members to see your email" checkbox checked in your forum profile?

    Also, just for process of elimination, do you participate in any other gaming forums besides this one, where you may have mentioned that you play STO?

    I'd be surprised if goldspammers were into lengthy cross referencing...my guess would be a gaming forum, here or elsewhere.

    I don't use any other gaming forums at all. This is the sole place I have used my Email address. And given the fact that it's selling STO stuff anyway, I wouldn't have imagined it coming from anywhere else even if I had used the same Email address.

    As for my Email addy being on show ? I have no idea. If it's the case that my Email is on show for anyone who cares to look then I see that as a discraceful practice. Anything like that should be set no "Null" as default !



    Edit: I have just checked my profile and it's set to NOT let others see my Email, which seems to have been the defualt option all along, since I have never changed it.

    If you already bought EC, they might have your e-mail.
    I am from Belgium and english isn't my main language, sorry if I make mistakes.

    earwigVR6, if all that is true then it was most likely leaked from Cryptic or PWE in some form.

    I have long suspected that there is some lax security issues within the 2 after I got TRIBBLE in 2013.I was in the same boat as you.I had not purchased anything from outside the game, no one else knew my passes, no malware or trojans on my computer.

    My account went from my possession, to a box in Richmond California, then to South Korea. So everything said, and with the speed it happened, it sure seems like someone had some inside information.

    It probably wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out on your email for the next bit to make sure someone isn't trying to add another computer to your account and also to maybe change your password.

    It took them 2 weeks to get control of my account back to me which is just a complete joke unto itself.And I didn't get all my stuff back either.(and I had a LOT of stuff) grrr....

    One other question. At any time have you ever signed up for an item giveaway at Groupees, any MMO website, etc. and registered an account on that site to claim your redemption code?

    I actually did sign up to that groupees thing a few weeks ago for the bundles of ships and small craft ! !

    Only place I have ever signed up for anything to do with STO..... So in doing so, my Email has been passed onto gold sellers ? LoL !

    Part of me wonders if Cryptic is in on that sort of thing. If they can't make money from inside the game, they will make money outside of it, or from an external source :-(

    The moral of the story?

    You need to have all of your gaming stuff connected to a dummy email.
    I completed a 2-man CSE, ISE, and KASE, Optionals included. And I soloed Winter Invasion.

    Neither Cryptic nor PWE would ever leak your e-mail to gold sellers.
