Ok so i get the idea, but what the hell?
I call rigged on that race, no matter how fast you start off, the AI always catches up and doesn't have the same problem staying on the ice that you do, I always slip and slide out of bounds almost in the same place, after that sod passes me.
is there a trick or something? is there some kind of special shoes i can use or something?

1. Run as fast as you can, at all times.
2. If you're about slide off of the course, turn and tactical roll (double-tap a movement key) back into the course.
The "jump-stop" also works to stop sliding momentum, but is slightly less idiot-proof than the roll. You need to release all movement buttons, jump, then not touch a movement button again until after you land. Done perfectly, it might be faster than rolling, but either technique will have you beating the NPC racing the player ahead of you, nevermind your own NPC competitor.
My tip: the edges of the track have a fair bit more traction, use that extra bit of traction especially around turns or when you have to alter your course. Works great. There is a fair bit of leeway there without getting disqualified.
You're not the only one who found it frustrating (at first) judging by other fleeties comments... and then you'll find a technique that works for you and it's a piece of cake.
Don't try to sprint, drift into the corners by turning early, don't try using rolls or jumps, they just distract you. I do this 100% of the time just walking around. Oh, I think I heard that your difficultly level has effect on the speed of the critter, so make sure it's set to normal. Believe me, I've never had any problem doing this race. Once you've learned the track, and are comfortable with it, then you can start to mess around sprinting and rolling!
does nobody bother checking the forum to see if there is a thread about something already????
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

And never lose again.
Yeah, yeah Reyan, we get it, there's nothing in this game you like, judging from all your complaints. There's quite a few people like this that complain alot. Yet strangely, they are still playing, so I call SHENANIGANS! :-p
Needs Benny Hill music.
Play this during the race for additional fun

I think you may be confusing reyan01 with someone else - there is definitely one thing in this game he absolutely loves beyond reason, and that's the Nova. And there is probably more he enjoys.
Every once in a while, I sometimes veer a little too far and get DQd, but its not too difficult to just go grab the mission again and retry.
Don't sprint, simply jog and cut some of the corners. Look down the track and try and make it as straight a path as possible. And you can take off several seconds early. When the countdown starts you can start with the forward button. You'll get a good head start and then jog. If you want to sprint at the end then fine, but it normally isnt necessary. The NPCs take all sorts of crazy long paths, so you just need to be in front of them. You don't need to smoke them, it isn't a timed race, just get across the finish first. Jogging saves A LOT of momentum. If you use the boots or sprint you'll slide and have to compensate. If you jog, you won't slide nearly as much.
Here's some REAL tips:

Pay attention, use two hands, be deliberate.
I normally finish when my competitor is far behind curves and out of sight.
When they release the new T6 Nova, they should name the model, USS REYAN, for his undying devotion.
Really, that guy loves that ship, his enthusiasm for it, has actually made me appreciate it more.
It really is a beautiful little ship.
My personal trick is to cut corners as much as possible, and try to do turns on the sides. The race is pretty forgiving when it comes to its boundaries.
I'm not seeing it either.
