The ship you get at level 40 is the last free one. After that you have to buy them from the C-store.
The level 40 ships are still viable for endgame, though. I held on to my Advanced Escort for a good two years before I finally broke down and bought an Armitage.
"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
Unless you go lifetime, then you can have your choice of the galaxy refit, the defiant refit or the intrepid refit, and just get the fleet module and upgrade module......
and here to see how to run the daily event for the ship that you need to do every 20hrs or roughly once a day for 25 times to get the 40x25 = 1000 tokens you need to get the ship.
The problem is that you have to win the races, by just participating you get squat.
The solo races are easy to win once you've done them a few times. I had to win 80+ of them last year since I needed all 3 Breen ships plus unlocks for alts.
I tried and I quit after trying for like 15 times and loosing, not worth the hassle.
I failed three times in a row the first time I did the race, not one time after that, it's actually stupidly easy. Hit space and you will stop moving immediately, turn in the right direction and start running again. Oh, and don't use the ice skating boots, they make the race harder.
The trick is you don't need to sprint all of the time, just enough to pull ahead. There are straight stretches it's safe to sprint on and curves you should slow down for. Learn when to sprint and you'll almost always win.

Otherwise, yeah, they don't generally give out free T6 ships.

there will also be a similar event for the anniversary event and summer event where you can get T6 ships.
nice thing is once you have these ships you will also be able to claim them for any future characters you create.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
