seeking help

hello all, James Buchanan Rogers here, friends call me Buck and I just came back to the game. I've been gone a fair while and I was hoping to meet some around the earth space dock or at the academy to help me get my ship and team outfitted since I've been out of commision long enough I am behind on what needs to be done to get me further into space. Im currently ranked at the beginning of commander and working my way up from there, flying a heavy escort; any advice here would also be appriciated.
Thanks

Heya Buck, always glad to see another face come back. I'd be more than willing to help ya out, get back in the game, run missions with ya. Just give me an ingame mail or PM @F9thRet. We also have a pretty nice fleet of guys that have been together before STO was even a dream in the dev's mind. (Xenocorp) .

IF I can help ya out, let me know man.
My mother always told me to walk away from a fight, The Marines taught me how.

I recently hit low admiral this morning; rank 40 and climbing slowly so I thought of breaking on the tactical officer and rolling up a science one to try out. I am at a loss as to what race or faction to pick however, though I have heard that federation is the primary faction for science officers because of their focus or some such. If that is the case I may make another human or I will go with vulcan, as I do not have the joined trill and not sure I want to buy a race and find out the career i get the unlock for is ill suited.
I've found though tactical officers are a bit weak for me, it is probably my playstyle or bridge officer/skill make up which I would change but a lot I've found in game do not have the time to help.

Federation is the primary choice for Science Officers because the Federation offers the widest selection of Science Ships at end game, by a considerable margin. The skills are the same for Feds, KDF or Romulan, but if you're looking to fly a ship with a heavy Science focus, then you definitely want to go with Federation.

As for Tactical Officers, they are the most powerful profession in the game in the area of dealing damage. Your Science and Engineering characters are traditionally more durable. What is the problem you're having with your Tactical Captain? Do you feel you're not doing enough damage? Are you dying too often?

If you elaborate a little on the problems you're having, I'm sure we can help you out. There are a lot of people on this forum who are more then happy to share their knowledge with you.

I die far to often, even with the assault cruiser I picked up as my level 40 ship; I am working on re-doing the bridge officer skills. I feel I do enough damage but I am always happy to do more, but I tend to have a lot of trouble with the cardassian ships that bring the photonic fleet.

just passing along an update; still have not made that science or engineering officer, while I am trying to find a build that will do well or at least passibly for my tactical officer.

If your tac is blowing up in a cruiser, try adding a white or green Neutronium console or two (cheap on the exchange) and choose several (or all) of these bridge officer skills:

Science: science team (shields), hazard emitters (damage over time like Borg plasma), polarize hull (tractor beams)
Engineering: engineering team (hull), emergency power to shields, aux to sif

thank you for the help dave, don't know how to use the exchange to be honest or were it's found; what would I look for tactical wise for consols?

In Earth Spacdock keep waling past admiral Quinn's area until you get to the room with the bank terminal and the wall of screens. The wall of screens is the exchange / market / auction house.

Set the rank to yours (40 = Rear Admiral Lower, 45 = Upper). Don't buy much yet, the XII gear is actually much cheaper than the X gear because people dump so much more XII gear into the market. White XII gear often sells for half of the "list price."

Tip: if you buy a white quality X consoles (instead of green) you can re-sell them later when you reach rank 45, then replace them with cheaper XII versions.

    Engineering consoles: neutronium.
Science: shield emitter if cheap, else nothing for now, wait for XII
Tac consoles: depends on energy type, the one with the word matching your type. So for phasers the phaser relay. These are so much cheaper at XII that you might wait to buy or just buy 1 white.

Weapons: for a cruiser, beam arrays and maybe 1 front torpedo. Again, at mark X you should buy white.
Tac bridge officer skills: tactical team, beam fire at will, attack pattern beta / omega, maybe a torpedo spread

The exchange can be found at any major player hub. Earth spacedock, DS9 etc. As for classes tac has the highest dps mainly due to the fact this is a dps game now. However that said under no circumstance is science or engineering weak either you just need to tweak the builds and play style. I'm a pure science player myself

For tactical consoles you want to generally use only one energy type ie: phaser or whatever your preference and choose tactical consoles that enhance that energy type, not the ones that enhance the weapon type ie: generic beam enhancing consoles. Consoles that buff the specific energy type give you more of a boost than beneric weapon tactical consoles.
The same goes with torpedos, if youre going to use them, stick to one type and use a console that enhances that specific torpedo type rather than the generic torpedo consoles.
For reference, the exchange can be accessed in many ways,
You can find it on Earth Space Dock, or other social hubs in the game, Earth Space Dock is located in the Sol system in the Beta quadrant. You will also find a whole host of other facilities there you will find useful.
You can also access the exchange in sector space by calling your Trade ship, you will gain the item that grants this ability some way into the story arc.

"If this will be our end, then I will have them make SUCH an end as to be worthy of rememberance! Out of torpedos you say?! Find me the ferengi!".

^ I have a lot of fun with my Fed science captain flying the Fleet Scryer, but I think a science captain and science ship are easier to do well after you've leveled up a tac with cruiser to 60 and have a better idea of what you're doing.

(Easier) tac in cruiser > tac in escort > SCIENCE! (harder)
  • semalda226semalda226 Member Posts: 1,994 Arc User
Very true Dave. Science is tough to play and build to get high dps but soo very rewarding when you do. If you like flashy things to make stuff go boom science is your class.

I think I am going to take the shot to variety and go kdf (or rom/kdf), I will come back to my tac officer when I know a bit more and perhaps can get some zen together for some nice things. I will try those ideas before I do that however, the change of skills helped tremendously.

thanks gaevs, still finding my spot to were I like; I gravitate toward the klingons and their style even if feds are supposed to be the best. I enjoy the romulan people best besides that so it is tough to find a fit for me, all this while i play my tac.

FYI, the exchange takes energy credits not zen or dil. A white tac console might be 10,000 credits or less so just selling a few loot drops that you don't want could get you a console or beam array.

At mark XII even green quality consoles or blue weapons can be cheap.

Below level 45, deep space encounters and system patrols are good ways to get gear. Check the prices on the exchange before just selling items to a bartender -- some items might bring 50,000+ credits instead of 1,000 .

A bartender at starfleet academy buys for higher than normal.

I went ahead and threw together a quick sample build that might help you a bit.

Before you look, a few things.. when I made this, I didn't know your exact level or what gear you have. I used the Assult Cruiser as a base and used items that are cheaply aquired in game or though the exchange. If you have something better then what I put in the sample, then by all means use that instead. The gear is designed as a template, but in case you decide to copy it exactly, I listed the current exchange prices for everything used later in this post.

You can see the example build by clicking here.

This is a basic Assault Cruiser build for a level 40-50 using no Reputation gear. All gear (or equivalent) can be aquired cheaply from the exchange or as drops/mission rewards. The current prices for the gear used in the sample are as follows:

Phaser Beam Array Mk XI (Green)[CrtD] -18k
Positron Deflector Array Mk XII (Blue) - 15k
Combat Impulse Engines Mk XII (Blue) - 13k
Field Stabilizing Warp Core Mk XII (Blue) - 11k
Covariant Shield Array Mk XII (Blue) - 15k

    Consoles:
Console - Engineering - Neutronium Alloy Mk XII (Green) - 18-20k
Console - Engineering - EPS Flow Regulator Mk XII (Blue) - 18k
Console - Engineering - Tetraburnium Hull Armor Mk XII (Blue) - 6k
Console - Science - Shield Emitter Amplifier Mk XII - (Green) - 5k
    Console - Tactical - Phaser Relay Mk XII - (Green) - 20k

Phasers are used in the example, if you use a different energy type then go with that.

You can click on the Skills tab for an example template of a well rounded skill distribution for a Tactical Officer.

The Space Duty Officers are listed in the 'Notes' section. If you have questions on these or how to assign them, please let me know.

The build is designed to give you a mix of damage with a slightly heavier focus on being able to take damage. By no means do I claim that this is the 'right way' or the 'only way' to go with this ship at your level, it's just a basic template to get you started in the right direction.

A ship equipped in this fashion should be able to pretty easily handle any of the story line content on Normal Difficulty Mode. If you have any questions on how anything should be used or why something was selected, please post and I'll do my best to help answer your questions.

Good luck out there Captain! :)

This was excellent thank you, I'll admit I am a little stimied about the use of officers beyond my bridge officers so mostly they are set out on missions rather than doing anything ship side. I use phasers, right now I am just level 42 working on 43 while I beam up these water generators for some cardassian settlement or some such thing.
I have been doing fairly well actually, better than I was this morning that is for sure and it has been in large part to the help I've recieved here so I wanted to thank everyone that has added and commented. I do not have the credits for much of these things so I will do what I can while I use what I pick up from missions and what not.
I did have some keys and ended up getting a ground trait called taking you with me (purple rating), Coalition starship tactics (purple rating), and Overwhelming Force/Tactical Retreat (Federation) (rare rating)

Nice. That's almost exactly the type of stuff I run when I level up a toon or I help someone else get their ship set up. Unless I splurge (or have better stuff I can give myself from other toons), I end up spending 200k-300k. Just selling some common doffs will give you the EC you need.

Only things I do a little differently is I like to use resilient shields (for the lower bleed through) and another Neutronium. But that's really just personal preference. Also, since one isn't going to have conn DOFFs, I double up on the TT. I also tend to go with a dragon build to start since getting some DOFFs can be expensive depending on availability. I prefer to sacrifice some DPS for survivability early on.

This was excellent thank you, I'll admit I am a little stimied about the use of officers beyond my bridge officers so mostly they are set out on missions rather than doing anything ship side.

    You're quite welcome.

As for Duty Officers, they serve two different functions. The first is what you're doing with them, sending them out on missions to gather XP, Items, and to level your Duty Officer Professions (Science, Exploration, etc.)

The second function Duty Officers serve is that you can assign 5 of them for Space and 5 for Ground 'Active Duty.' When a Duty Officer is on Active Duty, they grant you bonuses to your space or ground combat. A Duty Officer on Active Duty cannot be sent out on Missions, they're busy serving on your duty roster. To assign an Officer to Active Duty, you click on the Duty Officer Icon under your mini map (the one you click to do Duty Officer Missions) and click on the Roster Tab. On the left side you'll have a tab for Active Space and Active Ground.

The Officers I suggested for active Space Duty are Damage Control Engineers. The 'Subsystem Variant' of these officers each give a chance to reduce recharge time on your Emergency Powers (Power to Weapons, Power to Shields.) These help to keep these abilities available as often as possible. You can have up to 3 of these on duty at one time. I also recommend assigning a Warp Core Engineer as well. The 'Emergency Power' variant gives a chance that every time you use an Emergency Power you get a boost to all your power levels. This works well with the Damage Control Engineers since you will be using Emergency Powers as often as possible.

You might have some of these now, I would wait until all your active missions are done so that everyone is available to assign to active duty. They can also be purchased on the exchange and come in different rarity from white to purple.

Hope that helps explain things a little bit.
I do not have the credits for much of these things so I will do what I can while I use what I pick up from missions and what not.

If there is something you're having a hard time getting, let me know. I might have an extra or be able to tell you how to get it for free. ;)
