Cannons......Why?

Why are we punished for using Cannons???? I have everything reccommended to be uber DPS, Epic Fleet CritD DMGx3 weapons, Epic RCS (EPS) with 2 EPS consoles, Plasmonic leech, the embassy plasma consoles, the embassy Romulan Boffs (Both of them) and of course the Fleet Vulnerability locators. I have the Iconian Shields and Engines (working in deflector), both omnibeams at epic and I cant reach 20k DPS. I dont understand it, I have everything that has been listed as the uber Build and yet im still beaten by beam boats. So frustrated.

they wish cannons would go away....but we must continue to resist....resistance to the norm is never futile

Show us your build in http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/
Prior to viewing the build, you have to remember that at distances larger than 5Km cannons have a significant drop in damage.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

I run AP DHC's + turrets on a few of my ships (JHSS, Nicor, Manticore, etc), and I've gotten around 25k-30k dps in Infected Conduit Advanced depending on the layout. The cannons were all [rapid] modded, and Go-For-the-Kill space trait was loaded just for giggles.

Hmmm I will try an under 5k run. Im usually at about 7k

Also try to pick up the point blank shot trait from one of the episodes, it really helps out cannon builds. (Beams as well, cannons moreso)

There was a very long era in STO's history where the game was nicknamed "Escorts Online" and if someone used a DHC capable ship but sported beams, they were ridiculed. My have times changed.

That may be a major contributor. Also, if you're going to be up close and personal with your intended victims then you may consider this trait: http://sto.gamepedia.com/Trait:_Point_Blank_Shot

For everything else we need to see your actual build with gear, boffs, traits and doffs.
    Everything including skill point distribution.

Fly up close. Maybe slot a torpedo to help ease the energy drain issue (if you're having any)?

I knew using Kinetics would be playing the game on hard mode, but what I didn't realize was how bad the deck is stacked against Kinetics.

Anything over 2k you're eating range penalties with cannons. You want to be basically trading paint to not lose damage with cannons.

It's not pretty back you can "jackhammer", get to 2k, drop to slow, when you trade paint throw it in reverse until you hit 2k, then repeat, just keep your evasive maneuvers handy for avoiding the warp core breach.

That was before all the junk like aux2bat with technicians, DEM doff, plasmonic leech, plasma explosions, starship traits, etc, etc, etc. I remember those good times as well. Then someone who shall remain nameless (and I don't think I've seen in the forums for a while) started spreading the aux2bat+DEM FAW gospel.

I believe one on one cannons are still far superior to beams but people complained that the game was getting to easy ( sure with all the buy me now special powers it is) but instead of making the enemy smarter or harder they spam the screen with hordes of enemy now. making one on one kinda pointless if not completely useless. I resisted for a long time but finally gave in to the masses and changed over to beams. still makes me feel bad using Beams on my Klingon warships when they used to be do well with cannons only.

DO NOT AND WILL NOT PLAY FED SIDE.

Those were good times. You certainly saw more build variety in that era, anyway. Science ships, carrier spam, beamboats, B'rel torpboats, people who actually played tank/healer roles... back when PvP was still a thing.

I’m sorry OP I really need to look at your build to help. You name some expensive items, yet you don’t name them all. You mix beams and cannons? How much spec into flow caps when using leech? You have an AMP core or you use the ancient obelisk set? 3 pice Ico should give you a DPS boost in any case.

Now what about your boff set ups? What doffs do you use? Do you have your cannon attacks in sync with you attack patterns? What about EptW? Starship traits? We have some cool stuff around with AHOD, EWC & Greedy Emitters.

Just saying cuz I have a hard time myself to pass 50k on a cannon build escort, and like pointed out piloting and team interaction is most important despite a good build. On cannons probably twice as much as on beams.

Yeah I find it funny. I used to get laughed at all the time for using a beam cruiser.

I wouldn't exactly call them "those good times" beam boats were garbage back then and it was just escorts flying around as kings of everything while everyone else sucked. Unfortunately, the devs overcompensated for this and now we have cruisers flying around fawloling everything.

There was a lot of build variety? No...not really. There was just cannon tac escorts and cannon sci spammers. Anything with beams could be ignored since their pressure damage was just way too low.

There was when I played. Sure, escorts were popular, but there was plenty of variety nevertheless.

Escorts Online was bad, true. But replacing it with a two-finger FAW gameplay is definilty not the solution.

Perhaps you're worrying too much about the overall DPS. That's not the strength of a cannon boat. I know lots of folks that love to see my Fleet Norgh T5U, the I.K.S. Emerald Blade, come on the scene. No, at the end of the match I don't have the DPS overall. What I DO have is one hell of an Alpha strike. Slide up behind that big TRIBBLE capital ship cloaked, buff everything then decloak and open up with AP DHC's (4), omni beam, KCB, rapid fire and beam overload. If I don't pop him on the first hit I'll bring him so low the beam boats can slice him to hell in one pass. :)... it's so much fun I don't mind that they get all the DPS glory... they can have the numbers... I'm having FUN! heheheh

Yes, I agree with this as well. I'm not defending the current state of the game, just pointing out that the escorts online days weren't exactly peaches and cream like some seem to think they were.

Yeah - I'd take 'escorts online' over the FAW farce any day of the week.

At least with 'escorts online' it was just that - Escorts. Sadly, the FAW farce works just as well on cruisers as it does escorts.

So what your saying is you want escorts online back so that cruisers can go back to sucking?

I wouldn't say Cruisers sucked, I think the game mechanics sucked for cruisers. Everything favoured escorts.

Now with gimmicky consoles, traits and other crappy clickables, Cryptic managed to achieve "balance" in the sense that all you need is to bind everything on spacebar and use thumb to press it and another finger to change direction. And for that it really doesn't matter what ship you are flying.

Sounds like the problem is that OP is a scrub that's ripping off popular builds and doesn't know how to use them properly.

That's just as true of cannon ships as well... except that you need to point the nose of your ship at the target rather then the side of it. It's not like people using cannons aren't keybinding everything up as well. Are cannon ships harder to fly? Sure they are. You can just fly around in circles around something until it dies. You need to constantly adjust speed and maneuver your ship into optimal firing position, but that doesn't mean you can't bind half your skills to your space bar.

There is difference between binding half your skills and all of your skills to spacebar.

No. I was simply saying that I preferred things as they were back then - it made more sense in my opinion.

Escorts = killed things fast with cannons but couldn't take much of a hit due to weak hull. Once upon a time referred to as 'glass cannons'.
Cruisers = killed things a little more slowly but could take a lot of hull damage
Science = debuff, crowd control and shield tanking

But that's pretty much gone. We have Cruises that BFAW everything to death in seconds. We have escorts that can hull tank, and BFAW is so OP that escorts use it too. And science? Well, Partigen builds I guess - but leaning toward being almost redundant otherwise.

Nice sentiment except that at the height of "Escorts Online" escorts were no longer "glass cannons". Many escorts had very favorable boff layouts with access to a lot of engineering and/or sci powers without a sacrifice to offensive tac skills which made them very tanky. At the same time they also were much quicker then cruisers and could also speed tank. They were in fact, when built correctly, better tanks then cruisers. Escorts won at everything and cruisers were garbage scows. As for science that's been a constant nerf fest. The only time cryptic buffs sci abilities is when they want their npc's to be scary again.
