Blog Wars: A New Nope

lizweilizwei Member Posts: 936 Arc User
It seems that being forced to prematurely end the abortion of a storyline that was the Iconian War That Never Was hasn't been enough to convince you that putting game storyline in a blog simply doesn't work.

The fate of Sela after the war - love her or hate her - is something that should be expressed in-game.
You can't even claim poverty for this one (while making money hand over fist from "promotions" and lockboxes), a cutscene would suffice. Even an in-game, in-character letter would.
This? This is just lazy, and insulting.

I had hoped that with the end of the Iconian I Can't Believe It's Not War, Cryptic would realise that Blog Wars do not work, never have worked and never will work. Unfortunately it seems you want to continue down this course of failure and I for one do not approve.

Can you explain what are you trying to say in plain English for those of us who are challenged? I cannot understand what the heck are you talking about.

I don't agree with everything you said, but I do agree with your main point: story should be told IN the game. People shouldn't have to go outside the game to feel like they are getting the full storyline.

And should not be with cutscenes forced on us while we are in the middle of combat. Someone at Cryptic needs a spanking for that.

If you are not a native English speaker, I can possibly understand your confusion. However, if English is your native language, you should have no trouble comprehending the point the OP is making, as I mentioned in my previous post above.

I agree these blogs are stupid. Tell the story in game. This blog storyline stuff is lazy and ruins immersion.

I am not a native English speaker, I was born and raised in a small Island in the Caribbean called Cuba.
This is hard for me to understand

"storyline that was the Iconian War That Never Was"

Is he referring about something written by the devs about the Iconian War? Is he reffering to some sort of blog posted by the devs? Care to share the link?

TL:DR telling game storyline outside of the game in blog posts is stupid.

War that never was refers to the fact that I feel that the Iconian War was never properly portrayed in-game; we are told of a desperate war against unstoppable enemies that we can't win, and that is never actually shown to us.

Well, the Iconian war was real. You just had to go out and look for it. Just recently played thru the whole storyline in one go and all I can it's a great storyline and really shows how far Cryptic has come in storytelling.
What would be really great that they would add dialog and story branching but I know that's hard in any MMOs...

A self-contradictory statement, I think, because war is not something you have to go out and look for.
Moreover, while the storyline isn't terrible (aside from Butterfly, which is the worst storyline in the history of everything), it does not portray this so-called hopeless war; most of the missions involve the Iconians getting spanked, with only Broken Circle standing out but even then only due to Kagran being an idiot more than the Iconians being implaccable foes.

It was real only while you were inside an episode. Outside the episode, the war had no effect on the game world. That is even LESS than can be said of the random space encounters you see flying through sector space, which tie into conflicts with those factions set up in various other story missions.

Well, you need to accept the fact that STO is an episodic story based "single player" game. Much like a Star Trek TV series. As you progress in the game the story unfolds.

Now I'm picturing Kagran writing at his desk..

"And then the death toll at the Herald Sphere rose sharply because the Iconians were a giant, unstoppable force of hundreds thousands hundreds of thousands MILLIONS of ships that could assault us at any time any where and NOT due to the incompetence of a Klingon fleet commander who only got his position because he possessed compromising pictures of J'mpok and Admiral Quinn playing with dolls. Which is an OUTRAGEOUS lie."

    Who says it won't be?
This blog only fleshed out what we already knew. Her character is at a crossroads. Time will tell wether she falls back into her old habits or actually turns a new leaf. Right now she's still mulling it over.
Blogs like this are perfectly fine. They enhance what's already there and tell fragments of a story in a way that the game itself simply cannot.

Hey, at least they're in blog posts now and not magazines you have to go out and buy just to get your story fix. :/

The tales of war might have been nice if it came with some more actual content. Instead they decided to replace much of what should have been content with the tales of war. This is how impressed I am with all these blogs. :| I have zero appreciation for it at all.

indeed. i have read 2 blogs, but they became so boring and ridiculous that i stopped to read them. everything is done quickly (<- could be an other word) : the war is transferred in blogs, the real exploration is transferred in the admiralty system. And ultimately, we can't live the real experiences neither from the iconian war, neither from the exploration.

I have to say, the fact that they're still doing these after the 'Dev. blog war' is supposed to be over rubs me the wrong way and sends a bad vibe to me.....are we to expect that future seasons will also be as shallow and dry as the 'Dev. blog war' and supplemented by a filler of these blogs?
As much as they're nicely written overall, the complete story of STO should be inside the game, not picked up from references all over the place. These are nice when they're intended to enhance and diversify the in-game story line in details, like they used to be used before Season 7 was released, not like they were used as a main narrative this past couple of months - thus having me refer to Season 10 as the 'Dev. blog war'. This is just wrong.

There is a point buried in the flaming snark of the original post.

Instead of telling half the story of the war in website blog posts, more effort should have been made to place the content into the game itself. Yes, it's more work, but it would be more immersive.

For example, what if there was a new set of ambient audio for Earth Spacedock turned on once a character played the first episode, and either changed again or reverted to the old audio once all episodes have been played? "Herald incursion" instead of "anomaly" in the Andor system, etc.

I guess I don't understand why this is a big deal at all. What does it really matter if you have to read a blog or go off-game to pick up pieces of the story? Do you get fatigue from clicking your mouse a few more times?

    Game lore belongs in game.
You do realise that the vast majority of STO players don't even ever read blogs? Nor should they.
Stuff like this should be a suppliment to in game content. Not a replacement.

I do realize lots of players don't read the blogs, but that's their problem. If they don't want to delve further into the story beyond the game that's their initiative and, to be honest, you do realize that a large number of STO players probably aren't all THAT invested in the story itself?

For those who are, they can dig deeper by going into supplementary information. I still don't see a problem with it, despite your absolute statements.

It is not a story beyond the game. It is the story of the game. That is why they belong in game and not in external media.
To claim otherwise is outright lying. My statements are "absolute" because mine are true.
