Another “Coming Back” Thread… sorry :)

Hailing frequencies open,

So, like some others, I’ve decided to come back to STO after a LONG hiatus. I left a few months after “go live” and had participated in the Beta.

I’m a life time subber for both STO and CO, and noticed that I have over 23K zen “in the bank,” so to speak.

All of my characters, except a brand new Romulan I made last night, are Federation.

My “main” is Lv 21… Lt. Commander? Maybe full Commander? I forget. I have a lowbie, Lv 7, Tac Officer, and another lowbie, Lv 4, Science Officer.

I really do prefer to keep like ships with like professions; Eng Ship with Eng Character, etc… just a “roleplay in my head” kind of thing.

SOOOOOO much has changed and my points are all reset, and I have ZERO clue where to spend them while leveling up. There are various threads regarding end game builds, but not a lot about WHILE leveling. I can probably figure a lot of that out on my own, though I won’t say no to help :) At least maybe some advice skills that may sound good on paper but are really bird poo… maybe that type of advice.

I’m also curious if there’s anything on which I can/should spend Zen to make life easier for me?

I’m strictly into PvE, which is why back in the day I never played Klingon, (though my Fed Tac Officer is Klingon), so I don’t mind paying to win to make my PvE life a bit easier.

I don’t want an “I win” button, but I don’t mind smoothing out the rough edges… I get enough challenges in work, life, and raising my 14 year old son, LOL… I don’t need any more in a game.

So… ships or whatnot to buy? The term “cool” is of course subjective… but any particularly “cool” ships, items, gear, etc?

Part of why I started the Romulan was both the new story content, a severe case of Alt-O-Holism in all games, plus I figured it’d help to start over again before just jumping into the deep end with my existing characters.

Also, Klingons… I’ve read they have more PvE content now, but can you level all the way to 50 on just PvE? Are they worth playing for someone who hates PvP?

Thanks for any and all advice, and may you all live long and prosper.

Take care.

Welcome back. The answers are yes and yes : you can go from lvl 1 to lvl 60 doing only PvE, and yes, in terms of story and gameplay (or even ships and characters design), they are really worth playing.

Yeah you haven't played in a long time lol. Yeah the KDF is way much better than it was and can do it all in PVE which that is all the game is now though. Only rough patch we have now is our birds of prey which are the specialty between the science of the federation side has been abandoned so its pretty much carrier, battlecruisers, or one of the new raptors for ship gameplay for KDF side.

Well, to comment on the Klingons, I was like you. I used to only play Fed, I didn't want to play those "Dirty PvP Klingons". But during the Delta Recruit event in the spring, I started an alt of each factions so I could get all the bonus's. The character I made was an Orion KDF Tac and she has since become my main character.

To put it mildly, in PvE, she absolutely tears sh*t up in her pilot ship cannon/dual beam bank/torpedo build. I don't parse my damage, so I couldn't give you a DPS number, I just know sh*t melts :)

To address a few of your questions (my opinions in itallics):

That's cool, man. I used to do the same thing. I would just offer up this: There are a lot of really fun combos of captain to ship that I've found. A few examples are sci captain in an escort, a tac in a sci ship or a tac in a cruiser (built right, this is one of the highest DPS builds in the game). So while you like the role play in your head, there is fun to be had by mixing it up :)

SOOOOOO much has changed and my points are all reset, and I have ZERO clue where to spend them while leveling up. http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/search.php This link should give you some ideas for skill points and overall ship builds. Use the drop downs and dial in your ship and you should be able to find some good skill point distributions with some great builds. I haven't searched the sight for lower level builds, so I am not sure if there is lower level stuff. But you can see a large assortment of builds and have something to shoot at :)

I’m strictly into PvE, which is why back in the day I never played Klingon, (though my Fed Tac Officer is Klingon), so I don’t mind paying to win to make my PvE life a bit easier.

I already gave my opinion of playing a KDF in the current meta of STO, but to the second part of this sentence, I would advise buying a couple of packs of Master Keys from the C-Store and selling them on the Exchange for EC. They currently are going for around 3 mil each. With that kind of in game cash on hand, everything you could ever want you can pretty much buy off of the Exchange. The rest of your Zen I would hang onto until you get your main to level 60 then buy everything you want for an end game character. That is a lot easier said than done, however, I don't know if I could hold on to 23k

So… ships or whatnot to buy? The term “cool” is of course subjective… but any particularly “cool” ships, items, gear, etc?

I love escorts. They suit my playstyle. If you like the "fighter jock" mentality, I would highly recommend the Pilot ships. Other than that, comb the C-Store and pick out what you like. There are also some really good Lobi store consoles. That would involve you opening a few lockboxes to get the Lobi, but with 23k Zen, you can afford to blow a 10 pack of keys on yourself :)

Part of why I started the Romulan was both the new story content, a severe case of Alt-O-Holism in all games, plus I figured it’d help to start over again before just jumping into the deep end with my existing characters.

    I feel ya man....14 alts here :|

Also, Klingons… I’ve read they have more PvE content now, but can you level all the way to 50 on just PvE? Are they worth playing for someone who hates PvP?

You have to do ZERO PvP in this game to level any character. So, goforit with the KDF alt :)

Thanks for any and all advice, and may you all live long and prosper.

    Take care.

Hope this helps. Remember, everything here is my opinion and not gospel....hehe

Thank you all for the replies and advice.

As for the Constitution class ship, I got that at release because of something... lifetime sub? Beta Tester? Some reason or other. I guess I hadn't thought about stripping items off of it though.

My Lv 21 Commander, (checked and he is a Commander, not LT Comm.), has some type of other cruiser though, but the other Fed Lowbies all have my constitution and wear original series Fed uniforms.

I'll look into the KDF version of that as well. Thanks for the note on the Intrepid bundle as well.

Gotta say, I rerolled a Fed Sci Officer, (as well as a new Romulan... KDF to follow), and I LOVE the change to the beginning tutorial. So, much nicer starting as a Cadet at Star Fleet Academy. Really gives the sense of embarking on a career in Star Fleet more... "realism"...

I really only get to play a couple of hours Friday night, Sat & Sun mornings... so I'm looking forward to checking out the Z-Store, as well as beginning in STO again.

    Take care.

Oh, yeah... and I did run a quick space/ground mission called Saturday's Child... boy was that intimidating until some things clicked in my mind again.

Why can't I fire on the enemy? Why are my weapon buttons disabled? Oh... right... firing arcs.

<sigh> One phaser at a time? I have more, I can see that.

Oops. that's right...Cruiser ship ... broadside... fire fore and after phasers at same time by having my right/left side facing the target.

OYE !! All of these buttons... shield regen... sounds good... let's activate it. Change incoming energy damage to shield energy, that's a bonus... let's hit that now that my shields on that side are almost gone.

Oh, right... click on the arrows to divert shield energy to a failing shield...

Things got much easier after all that came back to me, oh, and slow down to make tighter turns.

Also, remember that most t5 and 6 ships can be used a level 40.

You probably have Connie as part of one of the pre-order bundles.

Oh and most missions are a low easier with 2 copies of Emergency Power to Shields. EptW is also very useful.

This thread was basically the exact thing i was about to post. Have a lifetime sub, preorder, collectors edition but stopped playing within 6 months of release. Have a level 52 Fed but don't remember a single thing about how to play the game so gonna start a new one. Am excited to hear that there is a KDF storyline now for pve. Definitely going to roll a Klingon I think to relearn the game and go back to my 52 after I feel a bit more seasoned lol. Anyway, thanks for asking all my questions first OP.

    Hihi

I'm also in the same boat / ship as you so as to speak
LTS who came back after 2 years.

First things first, the prices of stuff has inflated around 2x. When i left, it was 108-115 dil/zen. Now its 224z
Mirror Ships were 50-80k last time. Now 225k onwards

    Things which i found useful
Get the Star Trek Constellation for 500z. It's phasers level up as you play along, and you can discard redeem it to get the desired quantity of phasers you need

For Ground, i'm still mulling as to whether its worth to spend 2250z to get the Delta Quandrant Bundle, which contains ground weapons as you level up.

    Levelling from 50-60 is slooooow

    Main diff i noticed
Particle traces are no more ( anyuone knows what i can do with them? Trade it for the current versions? )
Certain daily events have become weekly / monthly events

Ship wise, i stuck to a beamboat to reaquiant myself with the game

But overall, i find that the story plot was fantastic! The Delta arc got me so hyped up till i rewatched the Voyager eps again...

As to whether to upgrade or buy ships, that will be purely subjective
I feel if you have existing fleet ships, its a toss of whether to spend 5000z on a bundle pack or 2000z on ship upgrade tokens for existing fleet ships. Your existing ships ought to be good enough for PVE content, and if you are in need of gear without spending EC / Zen, the PVE missions do give out decent gear...

I have to say grats on coming back to the game after so long, mostly all the oldies returning to play again. :)
The Rising of the Delta is the best expansion ever, and people love it to death because it is a good day to die in the endless struggle for supremacy of your own conviction. (A spin off of the Delta Rising is the best expansion ever and all the players love it.)
