STO ship creation/modifications

I was currently wondering and trying to find some way to make a few sto ships of my own or create new ones from current pieces, but I don't know what software I can use so I can submit any new ideas. I am not well versed in much program wise. I do know that second life used some sorta slider modification tools, as do a lot of other games for creating house items, placing, etc. I was wondering if there was something I could use to sorta bring into light a bit more creative to an already awesome game. I think a lot of the character customization is awesome due to it has a near unlimited way to make your ground character. I think with space ships its simple and has very little in ways of making a ship yours. the options for KDF or romulans is even more limited ( though I know those would be mainly due to each perspective empires style. and some of the special ships we pay zen to open boxes have no customization beyond colors and decals. so everyone doesn't have the ship look same,

    That level of customization isn't in the game for ships. If, however, you are simply wanting to kit-bash ship pieces outside the game, you could make screenshots and use programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel Paint Shop Pro, or even Paint.net to manipulate the images to your liking.

    Obviously, the expensive programs (Photoshop comes to mind) will have the most tools to work with.

    You can use AutoCAD 3D to model your ships, I had been working on a connie (from design schematics I found on some Trek site). I had gotten the base drawings done on the saucer, and hull done before getting sidetracked when my work schedule picked up.
    Ahh I love AutoCAD, so many good uses (I use it for work mostly - Construction/Surveying industry). Technically once I'm done (if I ever get back to it) I can make a 3D printout of my Connie !

    Ill try to post a JPEG of my work so far... gotta find it, think I have it on my usb key here at work.
    :D

    You can get a trial or student version of AutoCAD 3D for free.
    The Paid version is quite expensive though. like 15 grand for business purposes.

    I think 3D StudioMax is also another option for artists, which you can look into, and does basically the same thing as CAD, just has more artsy fartsy hatching options and shadowing etc etc...

    Edit: Here's a first draft of the saucer section I had created;
