I used to be once. But now they make me ill. Which is sad. Not as sad as some not being able to play the game at any time they want. But still sad.
I quit eating flavored chips about the time I decided to avoid all things with MSG. Well... mostly quit... I just eat them less than I eat plain chips with picante sauce
I'm cool with the maintenance. It means the devs are working on fixing stuff.
I started playing just this week and I am quickly falling for this game but in all seriousness this constant outage is doing a number on that new game excitement
(...) When there's NO consensus on the gaming forums. In such a way, the third party - the devs' one - ALWAYS wins. So, *be happy* with the ongoing 'shards'; we deserve them.
You do know that "shards" are how the servers are referred to, right?
So, you're telling us to be happy with ongoing servers. So, I think I will be happy with ongoing servers, since that means there is a game to play.
I came back to STO a month or so ago and nearly every day there is maintenance. I have played many many MMO's and other than emergencies once in a while, they take the servers down for maintenance once a week. I don't understand why it is so often! . Has it always been this way?
I also had to wait 8 hrs for a 10GB patch a couple of weeks ago only to have to download exactly the same patch the day after. My brother and my husband who just joined STO didnt have any patch whatsoever (yes we are a family of Trekkies and gamers lol).

This always happens with new Season releases, there will be stability issues for the first few weeks as well as bugs that were missed in the testing phase (which needs to be longer IMO)

THIS!!! (bold stuff)
.. as for the bugs that were "missed" -> no.. just no.. many bugs are known for a long time (some even for years(!)) and/or were already mentioned even during the closed beta!!!

It's their game, they can do what they want. However, it's my time, and I can do what I want. Keep me away long enough, I might just stay away. Such is the path to STO.
I came to STO because Battlefield had a 6 gig patch. Looks like PWE knows 150 MB a day is much better
You're either a coder/developer with full access to the code and server infrastructure of STO, or you're a randomer on the forums that likes to think they know what's going on behind the closed doors at Cryptic.
Gee, I wonder which it is.
Coder/Developer for any application, not only games, knows 100MB patches this often is lazy programming. Unless they are patching new assets there is no excuse not to use delta patches in this day and age!
I understand that NOW, Mr. Flakes, and... it will never happen again. Although and sincerely, they were actually intended as mere jokes, given the fact that the loading process was taking too long. Anyway, water under the bridge! l( Oh, and I think that you'll be happy to know that the REAL Irini-Serena - my niece - is 10 years-old now. I'm her soon-to-be and quasi-mischievous 33 years-old uncle - Silviu. And I work - when offered... - as a medical editor for: Dentistry, Cardiology and Orthopedics.
Thank you very much for the opportunity of us having to KNOW one another!
Why should we put up with these REPEATED 'scheduled' - unscheduled, in fact! - so-called maintenance sessions? Why not COERCE these 'cryptic ones' to solve these bugs once and for all by taking down the servers for a day or two, and LEAVE the rest of the gaming days ALONE, as it should? And only with unforeseen errors and/or server attacks to give us these unannounced 'shards', let's say.
Should we organize ourselves under the form of an e-Petition OR under that of a mass mailing campaign, directed at "Cryptic"? Either way, we MUST do something! I mean, I'm here for little more than five months and I already had enough of this!
Thank you!
Firstly, let me point out to you before you try, according to the ToS of this forum petitions ARE NOT ALLOWED and neither is targetted mailing.
Secondly, Cryptic, in my opinion as a 30 year+ gamer, are doing a fine job. Let me ask you this, could you fix all the hundreds and thousands of lines of code so they NEVER have to be rewritten....NO! In fact no-one can. Quite literally, the more complex the program, they more likely you'll find a problem. Even adding new lines of code might conflict with code that worked fine for years, and if it wasn't for the regular maintenance that Cryptic does every Thursday, I'm pretty sure you'd be complaining about the 'state of the game'.
As it is, they take it down for 3 hours a week, regular as clockwork, bar a big update, but you shouldn't begrudge them when something completely unexpected happens, just as unexpected things in real-life happen. I mean really, you going to demand the same from whatever deity you worship or whichever Government!? I didn't think so!
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
It took you over two years to come up with a comeback and that's all you came up with in all that time? Branflakes hasn't roamed theses threads as moderator in a long time, you sure zinged him!
Then I just noticed the posting dates!!!! *HEAD-DESKING*

Too true, too true. At least entertainment can be found elsewhere during downtime.

I don't care how long you've been playing. I only care about how you play.
And remember to follow the rules.
This is perhaps why I usually wait a bit before actually buying a game.
STO has gone through a massive update with the Legacy of Romulus expansion.
The unscheduled maintenaince are the boys and girls at Cryptic working furious to upgrade stuff. Hardware and software.
Hopefully normal server stability should be returned soon. I hope you can stick around.
