The other guys - if they don't come back, they will never buy anything in the game. But if they come back, now they have at least a tiny bit to make up the difference between you and them, and might feel they have a chance, or at least a reason, to try.
I get it, it kinda sucks to see people that left get rewarded, but they're trying to bring people back.. it's just how it is. If it helps any, those people coming back keeps the game you enjoy alive. Those that stay will likely purchase a Fleet Module to upgrade the ship to Fleet level, so it's economic support that lets you keep enjoying new content.
I'm not saying your feelings aren't justified.. they are.. just trying to put a positive spin on it I guess.
As usual, Mustrum is right...even a single person coming back through this measure is money for cryptic, even if they don't directly spend money on STO right away.
If you want the ship (for free), don't log in for a month!
2) I took a break after DR ended because I got burned out on it. It's how I play the game, every few months I'll play like a man possessed and then leave for 3 to 6 months. I got a code a couple days after I started playing again because of the crystalline entity event (best fleet mark per hour ratio ever) so it was a nice "welcome back, please spend another $600 with us" (lifetime sub + zen purchases to maintain balance and show continued support). It's not just people who haven't played since launch that are getting these so please stop acting like these codes are just for deadbeats.
Let the stupid suffer
The e-mail wasn't addressed to you, that doesn't mean that Cryptic isn't thankful for what you do.
And that they seem to appreciate you - there was the daily give-away last (?) week, which included 2 spec points per character. That was pretty neat IMO. It's not 10 for one character, but I got definitely more than 5 chars on my account.

Let the stupid suffer
that's actually a amazingly high fuel efficiency for something so abundant :P
