Foundry Feature Request: Captain-Only Volume

Captain-Only Volume

We have seen this feature in the Nimbus adventure zone, and Taco has said adding it to the foundry is a possibility, but this was several months back (in fact I think it was last year). But imagine the possibilities of removing bridge officers!

I would very much like to see this added to the foundry. Please show your interest by replying to this thread: hopefully if we get enough support then the devs might take serious notice. (After all, they are working hard at other features and we can't expect them to look at every minor request, but this would be instrumental to authors to allow complete immersion.)

    This would be very useful.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

Uh... what did the devs say last time this was proposed? I like the idea, but I seem to remember it as a maybe-eventually sort of thing.

I'd like to see a captain-only and a two-man volume (like on New Romulus). The problem I see with a captain-only volume (or other small group volumes) is making sure the mob difficulty scales properly.

that to me seems like a more plausible reason for its delay. A captain only volume on its own creates a slew of new problems, so it needs to be implemented after making other game mechanic changes and there is no way to know if that kind of NPC scaling already has code ready to deploy or if it needs to be created.

But yes, a captain only volume (as long as other auxiliary functions are implored) would be welcome.

Since it is for the foundry, we can control how many enemies spawn in a group. It is up to an author to balance a mission correctly (to a degree). For example - no author would pit one player against 10 iconian dreadnought groups.

Well, they may do that...but, they certainly would not be popular. (lol) Also, I nominate for this to happen too.

    10 Iconian Dreadnoughts
    10 Herald Dreadnoughts

Heh, I remember a mission once where the author put a fleet on one side of the map to keep the player from going over there.... It took a while, but I went there. :p

Instead of placing entire NPC mobs, it would be much more useful to place the enemies one by one. That way you could also very nicely do captain-only missions on ground. The same I'd like to see in space. Non-scaling enemies, able to be placed one by one, INCLUDING true dreadnoughts, not battleships in disguise.

If you ask me, anything that limits what the author can do is bad. It's up to us to balance the mission appropriately; don't force us to do workarounds when the real thing will work best.

There's also several mob groups that just plain don't work properly the way they have it set up. Voth and Vaadwaur ground mobs, for example: depending on the RNG a boss-level (captain-rank) mob for the Vaads could mean either an Overseer or one of their tanks, and can you imagine the possible uses for a Voth mech if we could actually be sure they would drop 100% of the time?

This is one of several volumes I proposed back in late 2014 for the Foundry.

    I fully support this proposal.

    I also support this.

smaller mobs would be useful, but there's no way the devs are gonna remove the existing units. more likely they'd give us a new set that are single enemies.

So long as the options are there, I imagine they will be used.
