The most common method is getting a Tier 6 ship to Level 5, but completing Specialization trees unlocks a starship trait. There will be other starship traits available either through missions, lockbox, or some other method.
If your ship was originally Tier 5 before Delta Rising, then it can be a T5-U ship. T5-U ships are not Tier 6 ships, but they are combat equivalent.

Not to kick off a row, again, about this; but just by way of information for the OP. Some T5-U ships are better than others, and some T6 ships are better than others. Some, including myself, consider the better T6 ships (the Intel Cruisers and Escorts) to be leagues ahead of most (as in nearly all) of the T5-Us.
If you're looking to purchase a new ship on a budget, I'd recommend reading a fair amount of the forum first, about specific ships. I'd also recommend choosing the ship that fits your style, rather than for its Trait.

And it is hard to beat a T5-U Scimitar. Some ships are just better than others.
Starkaos: Aye. I'm not saying that you were doing this, but I have noticed a sleight of hand whereby some will take the most exceptional T5-U as the exemplar of T5-U (rather than the exception), then take one of the more lacklustre (non-Intel, IMO) T6s as the exemplar of T6; and state 'Voila! T5-U is equivalent to T6! If not better!'
I know that this is an inherent problem of slapping labels on things (signified-signifier gap increases), but it can be misleading to the newer players wondering where to put their scant bucks, and looking for guidance.
Is there a way to upgrade a T5-U ship to a T-6 ship? I like the model of the ship I have (Galaxy class) so I don't care about the stats, but rather the lore I suppose.

Just get the Guardian Cruiser, it looks a lot like the Galaxy and it's T6.
I agree. So I think you'll want to max some specializations then. That will take a lot of time, of course. But remember - Starship Mastery Traits must also be unlocked first. So it might actually take a similar amount of time. And by the time you finished your first traits, it could be that Cryptic has already released a new ship with a new trait that you actually want - maybe even some of the old ships will get a Tier 6 version (they have not announced that they'd do that, and it might take a lot longer than mastering your specializations until they feel ready to do that, but whatever...)
I managed to get my Phantom to max level (If you have an Intel ship or an Escort, that ship's trait is gold), but that's all so far.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.

Exactly. There are some T5-U that are far superior to most Tier 6 ship and some Tier 6 ships that are far superior to most T5-U ships. Although, on average T5-U and Tier 6 ships are about the same in terms of effectiveness.
No you cannot get them from a fleet ship. Fleet versions are "upgraded" T6 ships that come with an extra console slot but only the zen versions come with traits and actual consoles. And please if you plan on buying both the zen and fleet version, buy the zen version first and get the discount on the fleet version. We don't need another thread complaining about buying the fleet version first.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

Still waiting to be able to use forum titles
You're not getting any ship traits from T5-U Mastery. Only T6 ships come with that.

It is a peculiar phenomenon that we can imagine events that defy the laws of the universe.

When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
30$ for a trait is a bit much tho

You *can* use those traits on any of your other ships, though! So, as a result, I'm currently using Viral Torpedo on my T5-U Mobius Destroyer.
there's two free starship traits from maxing Intelligence and Pilot, but other than that...yep...
